Build quality is outstanding
The lens is very well balanced with most of the weight near the body, so not front heavy at all
The Sony 300mm F2.8 GM OSS is measuring only 265mm and weight only 1470g = the weight of Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM I ! The Sony 300 F2.8 G in A mount that I also tested was 2340g so 900g more !
Like all the white tele prime its front lens is too big for a normal filter , so there is a standard 40.5mm drop in filter
The tripod collar is removable. Unfortunately the tripod collar has not stop every 90° like there are on the Sony 400mm F2.8 GM OSS
Another similar functionality shared by the 300mm f2.8 / 400mm F2.8 & 600mm F4 is the function ring (see later).

1.2 Transporting the lens / Transport de l’objectif
The lens is provided with a very nice unusual lens soft case. No hard case like on Sony 400mm F2.8 GM OSS. The lens mounted on a body can fit a standard medium photo bag
The lens box is not the traditional Orange/white cardboard packaging , but a recycled brown one
1.3 The Lens hood / Lens cap
- Reference : ALC-SH175
- Price : ?
- Width : 145,7mm
- Length : 96mm
- Weight : 196g
- Interior flocking
- Standard bayonet type to fix it on the lens by half rotation
- Lens cap : not a real lens cap but a protection in leather to be used exclusively with the lens hood in reverse position
1.3 Le pare soleil / Capuchon
- Reference : ALC-SH175
- Prix : ?
- Diamètre de 145,7mm
- Longueur : 96mm
- Poids : 196 g
1.4 Buttons
- AF / MF
- AF range limitation : full , 6m to infinity
- Full time DMF or not allow to manually refocus even in AF mode
- Optical stabilisation : on/off
- 3 panning modes 1: normal
- 2 Compensate for camera shake when panning moving subjects
- 3 Optimum stabilization for tracking and shooting dynamic, unpredictable sports action
- Focus hold buttons that can be programmed e.g. to Eye AF
- Function/Preset switch
- Preset allow to recall a preset focusing distance (that you setup with the set button)
- Function allow to use a function programmed via the body eg APSC/Full frame
- Power focus : if power focus is assigned as a function , then , rotating the ring causes the lens to focus smoothly in the specified direction at a speed determined by the degree of rotation. Power focus is useful for executing smooth pull focus effects when shooting movies.
- Stabilisation optique : on/off
- Mode de stabilisation optique
- 1: normal
1.5 Filter / Filtre
Considering the size of the front lens , there is no traditional filter possible. The lens offers the possibility to have a drop in filter of 40.5mm, and in particular you can buy the VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer for 480 euros, this one can be turned thanks to a specific screw
1.6 Comparison with Sony 300mm F2.8 G II SSM with LA-EA5
The A mount version tested here : Sony 300mm F2.8 G II SSM with LA-EA5 was weighting 2340g and was 242mm length (without the LE-EA5)
its AF performances was much lower than current modern lenses and sharpness was not very good on Sony A7RIV

Superb optics, but there is no need for f2.8 for sports or wildlife. Smaller apertures will yield more in-focus shots (due to greater DOF) and photographers will stop down this lens. So why not just mount a smaller aperture lens? My Tamron 70-300mm f6.3 weighs 540g and covers sports quite well. I often shoot birds with it set at f11.
Sports and wildlife need a very high shutter speed, if you do not have a 2.8 aperture (minimum) you will depend on the day and/or place (forests, night sports, stadiums, etc.) to always be in perfect light conditions.
Alan, I do not agree with you. There is need of f/2.8 for sports and wildlife. You don’t always have that bright light. I have also the Tamron 70-300 which is very good for the price, but very often I whish I had a wider aperture. If f/2.8 is OK e.g. at 50 mm for a subject, e.g. a human, why should it not be OK at 300 mm regarding the DOF? With f/2.8 you have a lower ISO thus less noise and therefore you can crop more.
