The Sony GP-VPT2BT is a grip/tripod for vlog with a builtin bluetooth remote to shoot/record/zoom (170 Euros)

Main functionalities are :

The GP-VPT2BT is all in plastic but very well built. The bottom of the leg have anti slip material

It is compatible with all Sony cameras that support bluetooth remote.

It supports around 1,5Kg : so a A7 with a big prime or a small zoom but is really made to be used with small prime like the Sony 40mm F2.5 G and compact zoom like the Sony FE 28-60mm F4-5.6

If you look for just a small mini tripod other solution exist like the Leofoto MT03 mini

The goal of the GP-VPT2BT is really to film yourself

• either walking with your camera and controlling via the button of the grip,
• either on your desk to record a Youtube/Facebook video and control the camera via the command of the tripod

This is why it is now often proposed in a bundle for free or for 100 euros more with cameras that have a flip screen on the side to film yourself like the ZV1 , ZVE10 & the A7C

Le GP-VPT2BT est tout en plastique mais l’ensemble est de très bonne qualité et semble très solide. Le bas des pieds a une couche antidérapante

Il est compatible avec tous les boitiers qui supportent une télécommande bluetooth

Il supporte 1,5Kg donc un A7 avec une grosse focale fixe ou un petit zoom mais il est tellement fait pour des focales fixes du genre Sony 40mm F2.5 G et des zoom comme le Sony FE 28-60mm F4-5.6

Si vous êtes juste à la recherche d’un mini trépied sans télécommande , d’autres solutions existent comme l’excellent Leofoto MT03 mini

Le but principal du GP-VPT2BT est de se filmer

• soit en marchant avec votre boitier et de tout controller grâce aux different boutons sur le grip
• soit sur votre bureau pour un Webinaire ou un enregistrement Youtube

C’est pourquoi il est souvent proposé en bundle gratuitement ou pour un supplément de 100 euros avec les boitiers qui disposent d’un écran orientable sur le côté (ZV1 , ZVE10 & A7C)

2 Functionalities / Fonctionalités

2.1 Pairing

The remote first need to be paired in bluetooth to your camera

• On the camera
  • Make sure “Airplane mode” is set to off
  • Activate the option “Bluetooth remote control”
  • In “Bluetooth Settings” menu click on “Pairing” and wait
• On the Sony GP-VPT2BT
  • Press simultaneously the Photo button and top part of the zoom button until it blinks red
  • pairing will start
• On the camera you will see “connecting to GP-VPT2BT”, Allow it , then you are done !

La première étape est d’apparier le GP-VPT2BT avec votre boitier

• Sur le boitier
  • Désactiver le mode avion si nécessaire
  • Activez l’option “Télécommande Bluetooth”
  • Dans “Paramètres Bluetooth” , cliquez sur Appariement et attendez
• Sur le Sony GP-VPT2BT
  • Appuyez simultanément sur le bouton Photo et le haut du bouton zoom jusque la diode clignote en rouge
  • L’appariement commence
• Sur le boitier on aura “connexion à GP-VPT2BT”, appuyez sur OK , vous êtes prêt!

2.2 In Use  / Utilisation

Doing a lot of webinars/Youtube my main use is in tripod mode with A7C to show details of objects I am presenting

The setup with a A7C and a zoom like the Sigma 28-70 F2.8 DG DN is very stable. You can Pan and Tilt by predefined angle (only) thanks to 2 buttons that are very secure

You have the traditional self press shutter to focus, full presss for release, video recording. The function I like most is the zoom in video mode. This one not only work with power zoom like the Sony E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS but as well on non motorized lenses by providing a smooth 1,5x Zoom on sensor. This is very convenient to have a smooth zoom while you are filming without having any quality loss

There is also the possibility to use the C1 button as per your preferences

You can also use it as a grip walking to film yourself , but it has no embedded stabiliser like a gimbal so if you walk it can be a bit shaky, it will be ok for standstill

Faisant régulièrement des webinars/Youtube ma principale utilisation est le mode trépied avec le A7C pour montrer des détails des produits que je présente

Le combo avec un A7C et un zoom comme le Sigma 28-70 F2.8 DG DN est très stable. On pout pivoter horizontalement et verticalement avec un certain pas (pas de variation continue) en actionnant un bouton dédié pour chaque axe

On dispose d’un bouton traditionnel pour la mise au point et le déclenchement , et un pour l’enregistrement vidéo. La fonctionnalité que j’aime le plus est le zoom en mode vidéo. Celle ci fonctionne non seulement avec des zooms motorisés comme le Sony E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS, mais aussi sur des optiques non motorisés y compris les focales fixes en permettant un zoom de 1,5x sur le capteur. C’est très appréciable car on a un zoom doux et stable sans devoir toucher l’objectif

On a également une possibilité d’actionner le bouton C1 que l’on peut programmer selon vos préférences

L’autre possibilité est de l’utiliser comme un grip pour se filmer en marchant mais il n’y a pas de stabilisateur intégré comme sur une gimbal donc ok pour des plans statiques mais en marchant on aura des secousses

3 Conclusion

The Sony GP-VPT2BT (165 euros) is a very nice wireless shooting grip/tripod for Vloggers. It is quite expensive on a stand alone basis but comes free or a reasonable cost in bundle with Sony cameras having a flip screen like the ZV1, ZV-E10 and A7C. In this case it is a must have

Chinese copies exist for around 80 euros providing same functionalities but those are less “pretty”. Personally I bought mine second hand for 90 euros and I am very satisfied of it for my webinars

Being able to zoom on sensor thanks to the zoom button on the tripod is making the video zoom smooth when you are doing a live recording, you don’t need to touch the lens

The feeling in the hand when using as a grip is very good provided your set is below 1kg. The tripod is very stable and Pan and Tilt function very easy to use and secure

Pairing was quite easy, and the CR2032 battery included last long (I did not had to change it until now)

Globally a very good experience with it

3 Conclusion

Le Sony GP-VPT2BT (165 euros) est un très bon trépied/grip avec télécommande Bluetooth intégrée pour les Vloggers. Il est assez cher quand on l’achète séparément mais revient à un prix raisonnable ou même gratuitement, en bundle avec les boitiers Sony avec écran orientables sur le coté (dédiés au vlog comme les ZV1, ZV-E10 and A7C). Dans ces cas là c’est un indispensable

Des copies chinoises existent pour 80 euros avec les mêmes fonctionnalités mais pas le même degré de finition. Personnellement j’ai acheté le mien d’occasion pour 90 euros et j’en suis très satisfait pour mes webinars

La faculté de pouvoir zoomer sur le capteur grâce au bouton de zoom sur le trépied est un gros plus car le zoom est doux et régulier et ne nécessite pas d’avoir un vrai zoom ou de manipuler physiquement un zoom.

Le confort en mode grip est aussi très bon pour autant que l’on ne dépasse pas le 1 Kg.

La partie trépied est très stable et la partie rotation verticale et horizontale par incréments est assez pratique et bin conçue

L’appariement est assez facile et la batterie CR2032 incluse dure longtemps (je n’ai pas encore du la changer apps 4 semaines d’utilisation)

Globalement un très bonne expérience
