1 Presentation

1.1 Speficifications

• Weight : 625 gr
• Price : 900 euros
• Length : 91,3mm – 140mm (in macro position)
• Width : 78mm

• Max Magnification : 1:2
• Apochromatic design to avoid chromatic aberrations

The build quality is top notch : The lens is fully metallic, focus and aperture ring are very well adjusted, engraving is in the metal. The only minus is that there is no mention of dust and moisture resistance

The focus ring is a pleasure to use , very large, with inner curves for easy grip with your fingers, with adequate level of dampening and with stops for the minimum focusing distance and the infinity

The ring rotate more than 180° to focus between 30 cm and 1meter so very (too) long & precise for macro, but when you arrive to 1 meter there is only 30-40° left to come to infinity which is a little bit too short to have a precise & easy focus between 1-20m

The focusing distance is visible in the visor in real time, which is quite handy for this type of lens

The lens extend massively when focusing to close distance

La qualité des construction est excellente : tout en métal avec les bagues de mises au point et d’ouverture parfaitement ajustées, une gravure des indications dans le métal. Le seul point d’amélioration est le manque de protection contre les intempéries et les poussières

La bague de mise au point est un plaisir à utiliser, très large , avec des renflements concaves pour faciliter la préhension avec les doigts, avec juste ce qu’il faut de résistance pour une mise au point précise et une butée pour la distance minimale de mise au point et l’infini.

La bague tourne de plus de 180° pour faire la mise au point entre 30cm et 1m , donc un très (trop) longue course, mais quand vous arrivez à 1m il ne reste guère que 30-40° pour arriver à l’infini ce qui est un peu juste pour avoir une facilité de mise au point dans la plage de distance 1-20m

La distance de mise au point est transmise au boitier en temps réel ce qui est un vrai plus pour ce genre d’optique

L’objectif s’allonge très fort en position macro

1.2 Aperture ring / Bague d’ouverture

• The aperture ring is at the front of the lens,  it is quite thin and sometimes you touch the focus ring and change the focus instead of changing the aperture ring. 
• The Aperture is changed exclusively by rotating this aperture ring and can not be controlled via the body
• Aperture ring has clicks for each 1/3 stops and has no position to become click less for video (unlike the Voigtlander 10,12, 15mm)
• La bague d’ouverture est située à l’avant de l’objectif, elle est assez fine et parfois on  touche et bouge la bague de mise au point au lieu de celle de l’ouverture
• L’ouverture se change exclusivement avec cette bague et non via le boitier
• La bague d’ouverture se modifie par cran de 1/3 et produit un clic. Contrairement au Voigtländer 10, 12, 15mm elle n’a pas de position fluide pour la video

The front lens is very deep inside the lens barrel so the lens hood provided is nice but quite useless as the lens is already well protected from unwanted rays of light and shocks due to its position

La lentille frontale est situé très profondément dans le fut de l’objectif, donc le pare soleil circulaire fournie (tout en métal) est un peu inutile, la lentille étant déjà protégé de rayons parasites ou de chocs direct de par sa position

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

The lens is showing an exceptional sharpness as from F2 and across the whole frame

I tested a lot of lens and there is almost always a significative drop of sharpness in the corners and the borders wide open: Here not at all! I run a whole series of portraits with faces in the borders or corners and they were always tack sharp !

So certainly one of the best lens ever made for Sony FE in term of sharpness !

In sumary Lens sharpness exceptional across the whole frame and only deacreasing as from F16 due to diffraction

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

L’objectif montre un piqué exceptionnel dès la pleine ouverture et ce du centre jusqu’au coins ! J’ai testé beaucoup d’objectifs mais presque tous montraient un performance significativement moins bonne dans les coins à pleine ouverture. Ici on a du mal a savoir si l’on est au centre ou dans un coin ! Aucun souci avec des portraits décentrés

Cet objectif est sans doute une des meilleurs optiques jamais produites pour le système Sony FE

En résumé un piqué exceptionnel sur tout le champ et à toutes les ouverture et une baisse de piqué à F16 due à la diffraction

2.2 Lens Fall off / distorsion

• There is now a Lightroom lens profile (2018)
• Lens fall off is present at F2 and start to be neglictible as from F4
• There is no visible distorsion

2.2 Vignettage / distorsion

• Un profil de correction est désormais disponible en Lightroom (2018)
• Le vignettage est présent à F2 et devient négligeable à F4
• Pas de distorsion visible

2.3 Chromatic aberrations / Aberrations chromatiques

• Although Voigltänder claimed its APO design is avoiding CA , I was able to get some, quite easily at wide aperture. They are not corrected automatically by Lightroom and you will need to set correction to 2-3 (which is very little to suppress them)
• Bien que Voigtländer revendique un design APO qui élimine les aberrations chromatiques, celles ci sont présentes à pleine ouverture dans les conditions difficiles. Elles nécessiteront une correction manuelle en Lightroom (curseur sur 2-3)

2.4 Sunstars / Etoiles

You can get nice sunstars when pointing at the sun. Some like it some not

2.5 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

The color rendition is gorgeous  it has its own signature, like Zeiss have one

Le rendu des couleurs est superbe, l’objectif a une vrai signature tout comme les Zeiss

Bokeh and backround blur  is one of the “weak” point of the lens , is quite good but not thrilling like a G Master lens 

At close distance it is quite nice but for longer distance the background is quite present and nervous 

Le rendu du flou d’arrière plan et le bokeh sont une des “faiblesses” de l’objectif, il est assez bon mais loin d’un objectif G Master

A faible distance il est doux et agréable mais pour la photo de rue ou de paysage à plus longue distance , le fond peut se révéler assez dérangeant et présent

2.6 Macro 

The macro performance is good but the max magnification at 1:2 limits its possibilities

4 Conclusion

The Voigltänder 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar is an exceptional lens with a strong character. 

• Exceptional sharpness across the whole frame wide open at F2
• Excellent color rendition
• Reasonable price for the performance (900 euros)
• nice sunstars effects
• build like a tank

but you will need to live accommodate with

• Some CA
• Odd focal length : 65mm 
• Bokeh good in close distance , less good at longer distance
• Only 1:2 magnification
• Focusing ring precise in macro but less precise for portrait, street photography

For me this lens will be terrific for portraits , street photography , some details shooting, proxy photography, but for real macro, I still prefer Sony 90mm macro that I find better suited with its 1:1 magnification

4 Conclusion

Le Voigltänder 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar est un objectif d’exception avec beaucoup de caractère.

• Un piqué exceptionnel sur tout le champ dès la pleine ouverture à F2
• Un rendu des couleurs excellent
• Un prix raisonnable compte tenu des performances (900 euros)
• De beaux effets d’étoiles
• Une excellente qualité de construction

mais il vous faudra vous accommoder de

• Quelques aberrations chromatiques
• Une longueur focale étrange à 65mm
• Un bon bokeh en macro , moins bon à plus grande distance
• un rapport d’agrandissement de seulement 1:2
• Une bague de mise au point très précise en macro , moins en portrait ou photographie de rue

Pour moi , cet objectif sera superbe pour du portrait , de la photo de rue ou de certains détails ou de la photo rapprochée mais pour de la vrai macro je lui préfère le Sony 90mm macro avec son rapport d’agrandissement de 1:1
