1 Presentation

1.1 Specifications

The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 is the second large aperture APSC Zoom form Tamron and complements the excellent Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (900 euros), it aims at offering a better alternative than the Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS (700 euros) and even to compete with many APSC Prime lenses

The build quality is good and in line with the rest of the Tamron zooms for Sony FE. Like for the whole series of Sony FE lenses from Tamron there are no controls on the lens to minimise costs and they share the same filter size 67mm

Le Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 est le second zoom APSC à grande ouverture de Tamron après l’excellent Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (900 euros), il veut offrir une alternative de qualité au vieux Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS (700 euros) et vient également concurrencer certaines focales fixes APSC

La qualité de construction est bonne et en ligne avec les autres objectifs Tamron plein format. Comme sur les autres objectifs de la gamme, il est dépourvu de tout bouton de contrôle pour minimiser les coûts et il a un filtre de 67mm

AF performance :

• AF is fast accurate and silent 
• Eye AF is working very well
• Tracking is working very well 

Performances AF

• l’AF est rapide, précis et silencieux 
• l’AF sur les yeux fonctionne parfaitement
• Le tracking fonctionne très bien

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• The tests were made on a Sony A6600 with its 24 Mpix
• In the centre , wide open, the results are excellent at all focal length ! Sharpness start to decrease at F8 due to diffraction
• Corners are already good wide open and become very good to excellent according to the focal length

An excellent performances , certainly the sharpest APSC Zoom for E mount and close to the best APSC Prime for emount

• Les tests on été effectués sur un A6600, avec ses 24Mpix
• Au centre à pleine ouverture les résultats sont excellents et le restent jusque F8 où la diffraction commence à faire son effet
• Les coins sont déjà bons à pleine ouverture et on atteint le très bon à excellent selon les focales en fermant vers F5.6

Une excellent performance, sans doute la meilleure en zoom APSC monture E, et au niveau des meilleures focales fixes APSC

Corners / Coins

Close up / mise au point rapprochée

• Results in the centre in close up are as sharp as at long distance
• You can notice quite a lot of field curvature in close up
• Le piqué en mise au point rapprochée est aussi bon qu’à longue distance
• On peut noter une courbure de champ importante en mise au point rapprochée

Long distance sharpness / Piqué à longue distance

• Excellent performances wide open in the centre and Good corners . For best corners use F5.6 to get excellent sharpness on the entire field
• Excellentes performance au centre à pleine ouverture et bonne pour les coins. Pour avoir une image uniforme et excellente sur tout le champ on fermera à F5.6

Portraits sharpness / Piqué en portrait

• The sharpness sis excellent to outstanding in portraits and that whatever the distance to the subject
• The skin and color rendering is excellent
• Le piqué est excellent à superbe en portrait et ce quel que soit la distance
• LE rendu des peaux et des couleurs est excellent

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

• Distortion is visible but moderate at 11mm (barrel) and change to the opposite progressively to be slightly in pincushion at 20mm but no correction will be really required in most case in real life
• Vignetting is visible at 11mm F2.8 but very low at all other focal length
• Chromatic aberrations are very low
• Resistance to flare is average with strong effect when facing the sun
• You get some nice sunstars when closed at F16
• The coma is well managed in the corners for astrophotography
• There is not yet a Lightroom Lens profile and you may need to wait 6 months to 1 year to get it in Lightroom

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• La distorsion est visible mais modérée à 11mm (barillet) et s’inverse progressivement pour être en léger coussinet à 20mm
• Le vignettage est visible à pleine ouverture à 11mm, et négligeable à toutes les autres focales
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
• La résistance au flare est moyenne avec des effets de halo
• On obtient de beaux effets d’étoiles en fermant à F16
• Le coma est bien maitrisé dans les coins pour l’astrophotographic
• Lightroom ne propose pas encore de profil pour cet objectif et on devra sans doute attendre 6 à 12 mois pour en avoir un pour les objectifs Tamron

2.4 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are well rounded wide open and stay mostly rond when aperture is closed , you don’t see too much the 7 blades
• The background blur is very soft for a wide angle , it only become a little bit nervous when the background is really busy with foliage
• The color rendition is excellent
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons à pleine ouverture, bien ronds et le reste quand on ferme, et cela malgré seulement 7 lames de diaphragme (on ne fait que deviner l’heptagone)
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux pour un grand angle et ne devient un peu plus nerveux que lorsque l’arrière plan est très fouilli comme avec du feuillage
• Le rendu des couleurs est excellent

3 Video

Video results are very good : Excellent sharpness , background blur is smooth, color rendition is excellent, AF is very good. You just need to pay attention to the resistance to flare and to the shake when you change the aperture

It small size and zoom range makes it very suited for Vlog, gimbal usage

Les résultats sont très bons en vidéo avec un excellent piqué, un flou d’arrière plan très doux, un excellent rendu des couleurs, un très bon AF. Il faudra juste faire attention à la résistance eau flare et au chocs induits par le changement d’ouverture (pas de bague d’ouverture sans clics ici)

Sa taille et plage focale le rendent idéal pour du Vlog ou une utilisation sur gimbal

4 Comparison with other lenses/ Comparaison avec d’autres optiques

The only other APSC Zoom matching this focal length is the old Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS

We wil also compare it to a few prime like the

• Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary (APS-C)

La seule autre optique qui est similaire en terme plage focale est le vieux Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS. On comparera le Tamron également aux meilleures focales fixes APSC

Specifications

The Tamron is the most expensive one. In term of size and weight it is very similar to the Sigma 16mm F1.4 Its build quality if very good but the new Samyang 12mm F2 AF and the Sigma 16mm F1.4 do better. The Tamron is the one with the shortest min focusing distance

Le Tamron es tel plus cher du lot. En terme de taille et d poids il est très similaire au Sigma 16mm F1.4. Sa qualité de construction est très bonne mais en deçà du nouveau Samyang 12mm F2 AF. et du Sigma 16mm F1.4. Le Tamron est celui avec la plus petite distance de mise au point

Sharpness / Piqué

The Tamron 11-20 is way sharper than the Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS, in the centre it is as sharp as the best prime for APSC (an impressive performance). The prime only do better in term of corners sharpness , but if you close down to F5.6 the gap in the corners become very small

Le Tamron 11-20 est nettement plus piqué que le Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS, et au centre il est aussi piqué que les meilleures focales fixes. Il n’y a que dans les coins où les focales fixes font mieux, mais si on ferme le Tamron à F5.6 l’écart est minime

• Globally the Tamron offers the most crispy / contrasty images among all the lenses in the comparison

Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

• The Tamron has very good Bokeh balls , background blur and color rendition (again much better than the Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS
• Compared to the prime it is better than the Sigma 16mm F1.4 and the Samyang 21mm (thanks among others to the shorter min focusing distance) and equal to the Samyang 12mm F2
• Le Tamron a de très beaux Ronds de Bokeh , un flou d’arrière plan très doux et un excellent rendu des couleurs. Une fois de plus bien meilleur que le Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS
• Comparé aux focales fixes c’est mieux que le Sigma 16mm et le Samyang 21mm (notamment grâce à la distance min de mise au point plus courte) et égal au Samyang 12mm F2

Distortion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

• Distortion/vignetting/CA is not a big differentiating factor between the lenses
• Resistance to flare : the Tamron is the less good one from all

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• Distorsion / Vignettage / AC ne sont pas des facteurs majeurs de différence entre les optiques
• Resistance au flare : Le Tamron est le moins bon du lot

Conclusion

• Considering the excellent performances of the Tamron and the fact it can easily replace several prime in term of quality with very few compromise (smaller aperture and resistance to flare less good than competition) the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 is a winner
• En tenant compte des excellentes performances du Tamron et le fait qu’il peut facilement remplacer plusieurs excellentes focales fixes avec des compromis minimes (ouverture moins grande et résistance au flare moins bonne), ce Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 sort grand gagnant du comparatif

Globally excellent with stunning sharpness, beautiful colors , excellent contrast , very good portrait rendering, very soft background blur

5 Conclusion

The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD (900 euros) is an exceptional zoom lens for APSC. It provide excellent results at all focal lengths with very nice bokeh, background blur, color rendition , AF, low distortion (except at 11mm) ….The only minus is the resistance to flare.

It will be ideal for landscape and architecture photography but also for video use, Vlog on the ZV-E10, gimbal usage

It is way above the Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS and doing as good in the centre as the best APSC Prime for Sony Emount in the focal range:

• Samyang 10mm F2.8 ED AS NCS CS (400 euros)
• Samyang 12mm F2 (500 euros)
• Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary (APS-C) (450 euros)
• Samyang 21mm F1.4 ED UMC CS (400 euros)

5 Conclusion

Le Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD (900 euros) est un superbe zoom APSC pour la monture E. If produit d’excellents résultats à toutes les longueurs focales avec un très beau bokeh un flou d’arrière plan très doux pour un grand angle, un très bon rendu des couleurs, très contrasté , un très bon AF , une faible distorsion (sauf à 11mm) , son seul point faible étant la résistance au flare qui est moyenne

Il sera idéal en photo de paysage et d’architecture mais aussi en vidéo pour du Vlog sur le nouveau ZV-E10 ou sur une gimbal

Ses performances sont très supérieures au Sony E 10-18mm F4 OSS et il fait jeu égal au centre avec les meilleures focales fixes dans cette gamme de focales:
