The build construction is good, made of high quality plastic and metal
There is an aperture ring with click, a depth of field scale and a large rubbered focus ring, that can be operated smoothly with a long course (which is important for precise focusing at F1.4)

L’objectif est équipé d’une bague d’ouverture avec clic et d’une large bague de mise au point caoutchoutée assez agréable à l’usage et de course assez longue ce qui est fort utile pour une mise au point à F1.4
2 Optical performances / Performances optiques
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix
- Centre : At F1.4 it is average to good with some low contrast, good at F2 , very good as F2.8 and Excellent from F5.6 to F11, at F16 we start to see diffration
- Corners : At F1.4 , average, Good as of F2.8, very good at F4 , Excellent at f5.6-8, very good at F11, then diffraction
- The optimum sharpness is around F5.6
Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix
- Centre: A F1.4 moyen-bon avec un contraste un peu faible, bon à F2, très bon à F2.8 et excellent de F5.6 à F11, puis la diffraction fait son apparition à F16
- Coins : Mou à moyen à F1.4, bon à F2.8, très à F4 et excellent de F5.7 à F8, très bon à F11 puis diffraction
- L’optimum de piqué est situé vers F5.6

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion
- Vignetting is visible from F1.4 to F2.8 but is moderate
- Distorsion is nearly invisible
- There is aLightroom lens profile for this lens , that you may apply manually
- Chromatic aberrations are quite low
2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion
- Le vignettage est visible entre F1.4 et F2.8 mais reste modéré
- La distorsion est quasi invisible
- Il existe un profil Lightroom pour cet objectif qu’il faudra toutefois sélectionner manuellement
- Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles

2.3 Bokeh / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
- The background is soft and pleasant
- Color rendition is good in general
- Bokeh wide open is very nicest as soon as you close down to F2.8 you see clearly an octagonal shape which is quite distracting to my taste. There is also some cats eye bokeh near the borders
- Le flou d’arrière plan est doux et agréable
- Le rendu des couleurs est généralement bon
- Le Bokeh est bon à pleine ouverture mais dès f2.8 on voit clairement une forme octogonale assez marquée. Les ronds de Bokeh deviennent ovales près des bords

5 Conclusion
The Samyang 85mm F1.4 AS IF UMC is a good affordable 85mm F1.4mm
- Sharpness is only “average to good” wide open and become very good stopped down
- A little bit Bulky but not so much compared to other Manual Samyang. The initial design of Samyang manual lenses being for DSLR , you always have an extra height to compensate the lack of mirror
- Bokeh wide open is good but distracting when closed down (strong octogons)
- Color rendition is good in many situations
- For video the manual focus is a pleasure but we lack clickless aperture. Please note that a Cine version of the lens exists with click less aperture
- Minimum focusing distance of 1m is annoying for portrait (80cm for Sony Version)
- Very cheap : 300 euros
A good lens overall with a decent quality/price ratio that will be good on a A7 or A7II
If you have an A7RIII, A9 , you should consider to invest minimum in the excellent Sony FE85mm F1.8 (costing 600 euros) which is a step up in all domains
Other more expensive and marginally better alternatives than the Sony 85mm F1.8 (depending in which areas) exist
- Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4 (for video and color rendition)
- Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8 (super blazing fast AF , fully silent, good bokeh)
- Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM (king of bokeh)
5 Conclusion
Le Samyang 85mm F1.4 AS IF UMC est bon 85mm à F1.4 très abordable
- Le piqué est juste bon à pleine ouverture et devient très bon à excellent au fur et a mesure
- Un peu volumineux mais beaucoup moins que les autres Samyang manuels. Leur conception étant initialement faite pour des reflex, la version en monture E a toujours une épaisseur supplémentaire équivalente à la cage du miroir
- Le Bokeh est bon à pleine ouverture mais un peu dérangeant dès que l’on ferme vers F2.8 (octogones très présent)
- Le rendu des couleurs est bon en général
- Pour la vidéo la bague de mise au point est très agréable mais on manque d’une bague d’ouverture sans clics. Notez qu’une version cinéma de cet objectif existe avec bague d’ouverture sans clics
- La distance minimum de mise au point est très grande : 1m (contre 80cm pour la version Sony)
- Bon marché: 300 euros
Dans l’ensemble un bon objectif d’entrée de gamme avec un rapport qualité prix correct qui conviendra à un A7 ou A7II
Si vous avez un A7RIII, A9 , vous devriez plutôt vous dirigez au minimum vers l’excellent Sony FE85mm F1.8 (600 euros) qui apporte un plus dans tous les domaines
D’autres options plus chères et marginalement meilleures (selon le domaine) que le Sony 85mm F1.8 sont disponibles
- Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4 (pour la vidéo et le rendu des couleurs)
- Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8 (le champion de l’AF – ultra rapide , silencieux et bon bokeh
- Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM (le roi du Bokeh)
