1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

Samyang has 10 manual lenses for Sony APSC bodies with E mount like A6000: 6 out of 10 were specially designed for mirrorless and achieve globally very good performances with a small size and reasonable price. All have been tested here

Samyang dispose de près de 10 objectifs manuel pour les boitiers Sony E APS-C comme le A6000. 6 de ces 10 objectifs ont été spécialement conçus pour les hybrides et présentent globalement de très bonne performances avec un format assez compact et un prix raisonnable

This is a fully manual lenses with aperture control on the lens (with click) and manual focusing ring, No Exif are transmitted to the body

C’est une optique entièrement manuelle avec contrôle de l’ouverture par bague sur l’objectif et bague de mise au point manuelle. Pas d’exif transmis au boitier

La qualité de construction est très bonne tout en métal

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A6000 with its 24 Mpix, to check image crop with good quality look at full size pictures here : Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC Fisheye II

• Centre : very good at  F2.8, Excellent as of F4 and until F11
• Borders : good from F2.8-F4, Very Good at F5.6, Excellent as of F8

Les tests on été effectué sur un A600, avec ses 24Mpix, pour vérifiez les images en bonne qualité c’est ici : Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC Fisheye II

• Centre : Très bon à F2.8, Excellent de F4 jusque F11
• Coins : Bon à F2.8-F4, Très bon à F5.6, excellent à F8-F11

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Lens fall off : There is some visible light fall off at F2.8-F4 but it is quite low
• Chromatic aberrations are very low 
• Distorsion : well it is a fisheye but not a circular one and it fill the entire frame

There is a Lightroom lens profile if you want a rectilinear projection but I would recommend to use the Hemi Fisheye plugin (see explanation in Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye) and sample photos below

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage : légèrement visible à F2.8 et F4 mais pas très dérangeant
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
• Distorsion : c’est un Fisheye , mais pas circulaire, il remplit donc l’entièreté de l’image

Pour corriger l’effet fisheye , vous pouvez au choix utiliser le profil d’objectif Lightroom qui apporte une projection rectilinéaire mais déforme fort les bords ou le plugin Hemi Fisheye (voir explication ici  Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye)

F11 no more light fall off / plus de vignettage

• With Lightroom Lens profile : a lot of the angle of view is lost and strong deformation is visible on the side
• Avec le profil Lightroom : l’angle de vue est fortement réduit et il y a une déformation forte sur les bords

• With Hemi Fisheye plugin : vertical lines are kept , angle of view is kept
• Avec le plugin Hemi Fisheye : les lignes verticales sont rétablies et l’angle de vue est conservé

Very Low CA / très peu d’AC

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• At 8mm and F2.8  the background blur is very limited , bokeh effect as well
• Color rendition is very good.
• A 8mm et F2.8 les effets de flou d’arrière plan et de bokeh sont très limités
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

5 Conclusion

The Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC Fisheye II is a very good lens

• Compact & lightweight
• Excellent sharpness
• Fisheye with Stereographic projection,  and filling the entire image frame so much more natural looking images and much more usable than a circular fisheye like the Meike 6.5mm F2 Circular Fisheye
• Reasonable price of 360 euros
• Very good build quality

Highly recommended if you want a fisheye 

Alternatively the 7Artisans 7.5mm F2.8 Fisheye, 150 euros offers similar performance at half of the price but the build quality is a little bit less good and more important colors are very saturated and dark which will require systematic corrections 

5 Conclusion

Le Samyang 8mm F2.8 UMC Fisheye II est une très bonne optique

• Compacte et légère
• Très bonne qualité de fabrication
• Excellent piqué
• Fisheye avec projection stéréographique et remplissage de tout le champ de l’image, produisant des images sans étirements, et plus naturelles qu’un fisheye circulaire comme  Meike 6.5mm F2 Circular Fisheye
• Prix raisonnable de 360 euros

Fisheye de très bonne qualité, à recommander

En alternative il y a le 7Artisans 7.5mm F2.8 Fisheye, 150 euros qui offres des performances similaires à la moitié du prix mais avec une qualité de construction moindre et des couleurs trop saturées et sombres qui nécessiteront une correction systématique
