The Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN is a compact and light ultra wide angle zoom. It extends a little bit when zooming.It can be used on a gimbal and for vlog

The build quality is very good but ergonomics are quite simple : no buttons.

Le Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN est un zoom grand angle ultra compact et léger. Il s’étend légèrement en zoomant , il sera à l’aise sur une gimbal ou pour du vlog. La qualité de fabrication est excellente mais l’ergonomie est simpliste (aucun boutton)

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• The tests were made on a Sony A6600 with its 24 Mpix
• In the centre , wide open, the results are excellent at all focal length
• Corners are good to very good wide open and even reach excellence at 18mm F5.6

• Excellent performances wide open in the centre Corners being are good wide open and become very good at F5.6

Portraits sharpness / Piqué en portrait

• The sharpness is very good to excellent in portraits
• The skin and color rendering is very good
• Le piqué est très bon à excellente portraits
• Le rendu des peaux et des couleurs est très bon

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

• Distortion is strong at 10mm and moderate at 18mm
• Vignetting is visible at 10mm F2.8 bu slow as of F4 and low at 18mm
• Chromatic aberrations are very low (but wee can see some at 10mm in corners in high contrast situation)
• Resistance to flare is good
• You get some nice sunstars when closed at F16
• The coma is well managed in the corners for astrophotography
• Distortion and vignetting are automatically corrected in Lightroom

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• La distorsion est assez forte entre 10 et 15mm (barillet) et s’inverse progressivement pour être en léger coussinet à 20mm
• Le vignettage est visible à 10mm à F2.8 et réduit à F4. Il est faible à 18mm
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles (mais on peu en voir dans les coins à F2.8 à 10mm dans des cas de fort contraste
• La résistance au flare est bonne
• On obtient de beaux effets d’étoiles en fermant à F16
• Le coma est bien maitrisé dans les coins pour l’astrophotographic
• Lightroom corrige automatiquement le vignettage et la distorsion

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are well rounded wide open but show heptagons when closed down . They are relatively small due to the focal length and slow aperture
• The background blur is very soft for a wide angle , it only become a little bit nervous when the background is really busy with foliage
• The color rendition is excellent
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons à pleine ouverture, bien ronds mais on voit des heptagones quand on ferme l’ouverture
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux pour un grand angle et ne devient un peu plus nerveux que lorsque l’arrière plan est très fouilli comme avec du feuillage
• Le rendu des couleurs est excellent

3 Video

Video results are excellent : Excellent sharpness , background blur is globally smooth, color rendition is excellent, AF is very good.. The focus breathing is null

It small size and zoom range makes it very suited for Vlog, gimbal usage

Les résultats sont excellents en vidéo avec un excellent piqué, un flou d’arrière plan doux, un excellent rendu des couleurs, un très bon AF. . Le focus breathing est quasi nul

Sa taille, sa plage focale le rendent idéal pour du Vlog ou une utilisation sur gimbal

4.1 Specifications

The Tamron is the most expensive , most heavy and biggest one . The Sigma is one of the cheapest and smallest. Only the F4 are lighter

The Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G ergonomics is much better than the 4 others ones with power zoom, AF/MF , focus hold button

Le Tamron est le plus cher , le plus gros et le plus lourd du lot et le Simga parmi les moins cher et le plus léger et compact des F2.8. Seul les Sony F4 font mieux mais ce sont des F4

L’ergonomie du Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G est bien meilleure avec un bouton AF/MF , un bouton de maintien de mise au point et un power zoom

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 is the sharpest , followed by the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN and then the Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G, the Tokina is the 4th one mainly due its performance wide open at 18mm. At F5.6 most have similar performances , but the Tamron keeps a little edge

Le Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 est le plus piqué , suivi du Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN et puis du Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G, le Tokina est 4ème principalement du à sa performances à pleine ouverture à 18mm. A F5.6 les résultats sont similaires , mais le Tamron garde un petit avantage

4.4 Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

• The Sony / Sigma & Tamron have the best bokeh balls wide open thanks to their shortest min focusing distance than the Tokina
• The Background blur is best on Tamron & Sigma, then Sony , the Tokina is the most nervous one
• In term of color rendition the Sony / Sigma/ Tamron are excellent, the Tokina is very good
• Le Sony / Sigma et Tamron ont les meilleurs ronds de bokeh à pleine ouverture grâce â à leur distance de mise au point min plus courte que le Tokina.

• Distortion is the worst on the Sony but the lens is automatically corrected so not a big differentiating factor between the lenses
• Resistance to flare : the Tamron is the less good one from all, the Sony the best one , the Tokina and Sigma are intermediate
• The Sunstars are the less good ones on the Tokina

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• La Distorsion est la pire sur le Sony , mais ce dernier est automatiquement corrigé en post traitement donc pas un facteur majeur de différence entre les optiques
• Résistance au flare : Le Tamron est le moins bon du lot, le Sony le meilleur, le Tokina et Sigma sont intermédiaires
• Les effets d’étoiles sont les moins bons sur le Tokina

4.6 Conclusion

• The Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 DC DN offer globally excellent performances for the lowest price and the smallest form factor
• The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD (900 euros) is the best lens for photography but also the most expensive , biggest and heaviest
• The Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G (850 euros) is the best one for video and vlog
• The Tokina(800 euros) is a very good lens but not as good as the 2 others competitors, it is a little bit less expensive than the 2 others but it should be 200 euros less than the Tamron in view of its performance
• Le Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN offre d’excellentes performances pour un prix contenu et une taille très compacte.
• Le Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD (900 euros) est le meilleur en photographie d’un cheveu mais aussi le plus cher, le plus lourd et le plus gros
• Le Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G (850 euros) est le meilleur en vidéo et en vlog

6 Conclusion (English)

The Sigma 10-18mm f2.8 DC DN (700 euros) offer globally excellent performances (sharpness, bokeh, AF, color rendering…) in a very light and compact form factor. It will be ideal as wide angle zoom on your Sony APSC cameras for landscapes or architecture

In video performances are also very good with on top zero focus breathing. but it lacks some good ergonomics like an aperture ring and a constant zoom. Its light weight makes it ideal for gimbal or vlog

Alternatives

• The Tamron 11-20mm F2.8 Di III-A RXD (900 euros) is the a little bit better for photography but is also the most expensive , the biggest and heaviest
• The Sony E PZ 10-20mm F4 G (850 euros) is the best one for video and vlog
• The Tokina atx-m 11-18mm F2.8 (800 euros) is less good than the Sigma and more expensive

Le Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN (700 euros) offre globalement d’excellentes performances (piqué, bokeh, rendu des couleurs…) dans un format très compact et léger. Ce sera une zoom grand angle idéal pour votre boitier Sony APSC pour de l’architecture ou du paysage.

Il sera également à l’aise en vidéo avec en plus aucun focus breathing, mais avec une ergonomie simpliste (pas de bague d’ouverture, zoom qui s’étend légèrement). Il sera à l’aide sur une gimbal ou pour du vlog
