1 Presentation

1.1 Specifications

The build construction is excellent , the lens has a very large rubbered focus ring 

The lens is much bigger and heavier than the Sigma 35mm F1.4

The lens hood has a button you need to push to unlock and remove it from the body of the lens, it has also a rubber ring that is prone to dust

La qualité de construction est excellente, l’objectif a une large bague de mise au point

L’objectif est beaucoup plus gros et lourd que le Sigma 35mm F1.4

Le pare soleil est en plastique avec un bouton pour décrocher celui-ci de l’objectif. Il est équipé d’une bande de caoutchouc qui attire toutes les poussières environnantes

1.2 Autofocus

I tested the Sigma 40mm F1.4 on the Sony A7RIII with firmware 3.01

There were many issues with AFC pumping and eye AF with firmware V1 of the lens , I have now restested with firmware V2 and I am happy to say that AFC is very good now and eye AF is snappy and on the spot

J’ai testé le Sigma 40mm F1.4 sur le Sony A7RIII en version 3.01

IL y avait pas mal de problèmes avec la V1 du firmware de l’objectif en AFC et avec l’eye AF, j’ai maintenant pu retested avec la V2 du firmware et je suis heureux de constater qu’il n’y a plus aucun problème , l’AF est rapide et fiable en toutes situations

1.3 Handling / Maniement

The Sigma 40mm F1.4 is very heavy (1.35 kg = almost the weight of the Sony 70-200 F2.8GM) and huge and is not easy to manipulate

Le Sigma 40mm F1.4 est très lourd (1,35kg = presque le poids du Sony 70-200 F2.8 GM) et très encombrant, il n’est pas aisé à manipuler

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, which has the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : Excellent at F1.4 , outstanding as of F2 , diffraction as of F16
• Corners : Very good at F1.4-F2, Excellent at F2.8, Outstanding as of F4, diffraction at F16

An Excellent performance 

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre : Excellent à F1.4  Superbe dès F2 jusque F11 , diffraction à partir de F16
• Coins : Très Bon à F1.4-F2, excellent à F2.8, superbe à partir de F4 , diffraction à partir de F16

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare 

• Vignetting is very visible at F1.4 and disappears around F2.8
• Distorsion is very low
• Chromatic aberrations are very low : I did not had any
• Flare resistance is very good with no loss of contrast 
• Very nice sunstars effect when closed down to F11/F16

There is a Lightroom lens profile that will correct the lens fall off  and distorsion

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• Le vignettage est bien visible à F1.4 mais disparait vers F2.8
• La distorsion est faible
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques visibles
• Très Bonne résistance au flare , pas de perte de contraste
• Beaux effets d’étoiles à F11/F16

Il y a un profil de correction Lightroom pour corriger le vignettage et la distorsion

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The color rendition is very good 
• The background blur is superb and very soft
• The 3D effect at F1.4 for people walking in the street is very nice
• Bokeh Balls are very good between with no hard edges edges,
  • At F1.4 you quickly see ovals but
  • As of F2 they are well rounded everywhere
  • At F4 unfortunately you start to see the 9 blades of the pastures and you miss a perfectly round bokeh balls like you can have this a Sony GM lens with 11 blades
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon
• Le flou d’arrière plan est superbe , très doux
• L’effet 3D à F1.4 pour des passants dans la rue est très beau et naturel
• Les ronds de bokeh sont très bons avec des bords doux
  • à F1.4 on a souvent des ovales
  • A partir de F2 les ronds de bokeh sont parfaitement ronds
  • A partir de f4 malheureusement on voit les 9 cotés du diaphragme. Les objectifs Sony GM avec souvent leurs 11 lamelles font mieux sur cet aspect “bokeh rond”

3 Video

Autofocus : the AF in video is performant and silent: transition from near to far subject are smooth and quick. The bokeh and background blur is superb

Aperture control : to change the aperture you will need to use the body control, which is rather noisy and a continuous variation of the aperture like on the Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 that has a click less aperture ring is not possible  

Autofocus : l’AF est performant et silencieux en vidéo ,  les transitions proche loin sont rapides et douces. Le flou d’arrière plan est superbe

Contrôle de l’ouverture : Pour changer d’ouverture il faudra passer par les molettes sur le boitier ce qui est bruyant et de plus une variation continue de l’ouverture pendant le tournage ne sera pas possible sans à coups. Le Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4. lui dispose d’une bague d’ouverture sur l’objectif qui peut être actionnée sans clics

As usual with a F1.4 lens , the depth of field is very small and unless your subject is really facing you only 1 eye maybe sharp at F1.4 , so you better use F2 if you subject is turning head or F3.5 even if you have a couple for more safety

Portrait are very good at f1.4 with a beautiful bokeh, at F2.8 sharpness is outstanding

Comme d’habitude avec une optique à F1.4 , la profondeur de champ est très réduite à moins que votre sujet ne vous fasse face , seul un des deux yeux sera net, il vaudra mieux être à F2 pour un portrait en 3/4 ou à F3.5 pour un couple pour plus de sûreté

Les portraits à F1.4 sont très bons avec un très beau bokeh , à F2.8 le piqué est superbe

5 Conclusion

The Sigma 40m F1.4 DG HSM Art (1150 euros) is a excellent lens 

Pros

• Excellent sharpness ,
• Superb background blur and very beautiful 3D effect at F1.4
• Very good bokeh balls
• Fast and efficient AF (with V2 of the firmware of the lens)
• Low distorsion ,
• Low CA,
• Lightroom Lens profile available to correct vignetting
• No Flare 
• Reasonable price

Cons

• Size 157mm
• Weight (1.3kg)
• Bokeh balls at F4 not perfectly circular

This lens is on all points (much) better than the Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 CF or the Voigltander 40mm F1.2 Nokton, but with big size and weight as drawbacks

5 Conclusion

Le Sigma 40mm F1.4 DG HSM Art (1150 euros) est un excellent objectif

• Excellent Piqué
• Superbe flou d’arrière plan et très bel effet 3D à F1.4
• Très beau ronds de bokeh
• AF rapide et fiable (avec la V2 du firmware de l’objectif)
• Très faible distorsion
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Profil Lightroom pour corriger le vignettage
• Très bonne résistance au flare
• Prix raisonnable

Contre

• Taille. : 157mm
• Poids : 1,3kg
• Ronds de Bokeh à F4 non parfaitement circulaires

A tout point de vue cet objectif est supérieur au Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 CF ou au  Voigltander 40mm F1.2 Nokton , reste sa taille et son poids comme principal handicap
