1 Introduction

1.1 The Sony A7c

The Sony A7C is the smallest and lightest (509g) full frame with interchangeable lens from Sony. It is barely bigger than the A6600 (503g) and much lighter (-22%) and smaller than the A7III (650g)

To achieve this, tradeoff have been made

  • the visor is quite small compared to a7III as it is the same as on the A6600
  • ergonomics are similar to a A6600 so less custom buttons no joystick
  • the sensor stab is a little bit less good as you had to slot the full frame sensor in a much smaller body

On the improvements vs the A7III

  • the weight and size is much smaller (very similar to the A6600) which makes it perfect for street photography, travel and usage on gimbal
  • the rear screen can be flipped for Vlog and other video work
  • the AF is much better than on the A7III with the real time tracking inherited from the A9
  • Real Time Eye AF for animals
  • Eye AF in Video
  • Digital Audio interface

All that makes it a perfect camera for video if you can’t afford the A7SIII. A video cage will allow to mount numerous accessories more easily as you will see in next chapters

1.1 Le Sony A7C

Le Sony A7C est le plus petit et le plus léger (509g) boitier plein format à objectifs interchangeable chez Sony. Il est à peine plus gros que le Sony A6600 (503g) et il est nettement plus compact et léger (-22%) que le Sony A7III (650g)

Pour atteindre ce résultats des compromis ont été faits

  • Le viseur est assez petit par rapport au A7III car c’est le même que celui du A6600
  • L’ergonomie est celle du A66000 donc beaucoup de boutons paramétrables et pas de joystick
  • La stabilisation capteur est un peu moins efficace que sur A7III , le boitier étant plus petit le mécanisme de stab a du être un peu “réduit”

Du cotés des améliorations par rapport au A7III

  • Le poids et la taille sont significativement réduits et très proches du A6600 ce qui le rend parfait pour de la photographie de rue, de voyage ou une utilisation sur gimbal
  • L’écran arrière pivote su rue coté et peut se retourner ce qui le rend idéal pour du vlog et la vidéo en général
  • L’autofocus est nettement amélioré car il dispose de l’autofocus real time tracking hérité du A9
  • Real time eye AF pour les animaux
  • Eye Af en vidéo
  • Digital Audio interface pour la prise de son

Tous ces points le rendent idéal pour de la vidéo si on ne peut pas s’offrir le A7SIII. Une cage permettra le montage d’accessoire variés comme nous pourrons le voir dans la suite de l’article

2.1 Using cages, handles, monitor on Sony A7C

Cages and handles will help you mount accessories when taking video with your A7C and will help you to have a better stability for heavy sets

For this review I tested the following elements from SmallRig

2.1 Utilisation de cage, poignées , support moniteur pour améliorer l’ergonomie en vidéo sur le Sony A7C

Une cage accompagnée de différentes accessoires comme des poignées , des support moniteurs permettront de fixer solidement différents accessoire sur votre A7C en lui donnant un bon équilibre et une ergonomie améliorée en video

Les accessoires typiques que l’on utilisera sont

Pour cet article, j’ai testé les accessoires suivants de chez SmallRig

3 Cage for Sony A7C 3081

3.1 Specifications

The Camera Cage For Sony A7C 3081 (44$) , 140g) has mainly 2 functions

  • providing protection to your camera
  • providing support to mount any video accessories you may want to use: microphone ,monitor , recorder, light, top handle, side handle….

Mounting accessories is achieved either by using

  • Any of the numerous 1/4″ or 3/8″ holes
  • Arri Mount
  • A cold Shoe mount

The camera is fixed at the bottom by a 1/4″ screw and you can further fix it by using M2.5 screw in the right strap hole to avoid any twist. There are also a strap hole on the right to fix a wrist strap

The bottom of the cage has an Arca Swiss design for easy mounting on a tripod

The design of the cage is comptable with the HDMI plug , microphone jack and the swivel screen of the A7C

The build quality and design is excellent and the cage is light at only 140g

Mounting the cage on the camera is easy thanks to a built-in magnetic Allen wrench located a the bottom. Mounted you can still access the battery door and the door for HDMI / mic jack

On the “annoyance” : You need to remove the lens to attach the cage. Once installed you can install and switch lenses easily

  • fournir une protection pour votre boitier
  • fournir un support pour des accessoires vidéo : microphone , support écran, lumière, poignée supérieure, poignée latérale en bois….

Le montage d’accessoires se fait via

  • un des nombreux trous 1/4″ ou 3/8″
  • une monture Arri
  • 1 support griffe ISO

La fixation du boitier se fait par une vis 1/4″ et on peut encore la renforcer avec une vis M2.5 à l’emplacement de l’œillet pour sangle droit ce qui permet d’éliminer tout risque de rotation du boitier vis a vis de la cage. Un emplacement pour une sangle de poignet est également prévu

La conception de la cage est compatible avec les spécificités du A7C : port HDMI mini , prise son et écran sur le coté

La base de la cage est une monture Arca Swiss qui permet donc de l’utiliser directement sur un trépied

La qualité de construction est excellente et la cage ne pèse que 140g

Le montage de la cage sur le boitier est aisé et se fait avec un vis plate magnétique qui se clipse sur le bas de la cage. Une fois monté on a toujours accès à la trappe pour la batterie et à celle pour les ports jack et HDMI

Dans les regrets : on doit doit enlever l’objectif pour pouvoir monter la cage. Une fois montée on peut monter/démonter les objectifs sans problèmes

3.2 In Use / En pratique

As you can see from below example, the cage is very versatile , keep the left & right door free (no problem to use the HDMI the microphone jack or the swivel screen)

The Cage give also a better grip as the A7C is quite small

Comme on peut le voir ci dessous , la cage est très polyvalente et laisse les accès aux portes latérales sans aucun souci (pas de problème pour le port HMDI, la prise jack ou l’écran rotatif)

La cage permet également de donner un peu de volume au A7C pour avoir une meilleure prise en main

4 Side Handles & Monitor mount / Poignées latérale et support écran

4.1 Monitor mount

If you want to use a monitor mount to have a bigger screen or want to use an Atomos Recorder you need to use the SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with screws mount 2904 (28$) – 95g

Key Features:
1. Supports 5” and 7” Onboard Monitor up to 1.5kg.
2. Swivels 360° and Tilts 170°. 
3. Tightness Adjustable on Each Axis.
4. Features Slots on Thumbscrews for Tightening the Mount.

4.1 Support écran

Si vous voulez utilizer un ecran externe plus grand ou un enregistreur comme le Atomos Ninja alors il faut utiliser le support SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with screws mount 2904 (28$) – 95g

Points clés:
1. Supporte les écrans 5” et 7” jusque 1.5kg.
2. Tourne sur 360° et pivote verticalement sur 170°. 
3. Pression ajustable sur chacun des axes
4. Trou pour clé Allen pour ajuster la pression de montage

4.2 Side Handles

For the A7C the Wooden Universal Side Handle 2093 (67$). is recommended. Pay attention it will block the the swivel screen and this configuration is only for use with an external monitor

This handle is really beautiful and confortable. It really improves the ergonomics by providing a grip that increase stabilisation when using an Atomos Ninja V

Key Features:
1. Can Be Configured for Right or Left Hand.
3. 1/4″-20 & 3/8”-16 & Cold Shoe Accessory Mounts.
3. Adjusts up & down with Sliding Connector.
4. Integrated Hex Spanner for Direction Changing and Height Adjusting.
5. Lightweight : 192g

4.2 Poignée latérale

Pour le A7C la poignée recommandée est la Wooden Universal Side Handle 2093 (67$). Attention que cette poignée bloque l’écran pivotant interne. On l’utilisera principalement quand on se sert d’un enregistreur Atomos Ninja V sur le support écran. La poignée est très belle et comfortable. Elle améliore l’ergonomie et améliore la stabilisation

Point clés:
1. Peut être configuré pour la gauche ou la droite.
3. Tous 1/4″-20 & 3/8”-16 & support griffe ISO.
3. Réglable en hauteur.
4. Outil intégré pour les réglages
5. Léger : 192g

5 Top Handle for Sony XLR-K3M Adapter 3082

The SmallRig Top Handle for Sony XLR-K1M / K2M / K3M Adapter 3082 (69$), is a particularly well designed top handle to be coupled with Sony XLR adapter

Key Features:

  1. Form-fitting top handle for Sony XLR-K1M, XLR-K2M, XLR-K3M, and Panasonic DMW-XLR1.
  2. Vertical adjustable for up to 25mm to use it without XLR kit (low height) or with XLR kit (high height)
  3. Horizontal adjustable for up to 63mm to find the appropriate center of gravity..
  4. Built-in cold shoe mounts, 1/4″-20 threaded holes, ARRI 3/8”-16 accessory mounts.
  5. Integrate Allen wrench for quick release and adjustment.
  6. Net Weight: 192.5g±5g

The handle is secured to the top of the camera cage via two captive 1/4″-20 screws .

Both ends of the handle come with a cold shoe for the mounting microphone or a SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with Cold Shoe Mount 2905,

Multiple built-in 1/4″-20 threaded holes and ARRI 3/8”-16 locating holes support SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with ARRI-Style Mount 2903 and 2904.

I use this top handle either

  • With the KLR kit on the hotshoe and with one external monitor on the handle, or just using the internal screen
  • Just with the handle and eventually a Rode wireless Go II microphone or Rode video micro : In this configuration I can’t plug the ECM-B1M on the hotshoe

Le SmallRig Top Handle for Sony XLR-K1M / K2M / K3M Adapter 3082 (69$) est une poignée supérieure particulièrement bien conçue

Points clés:

  1. Poignée supérieure conçue pour une compatibilité avec les micro Sony XLR-K1M, XLR-K2M, XLR-K3M, & Panasonic DMW-XLR1.
  2. Ajustement vertical sur 25mm pour une utilization sans kit XLR (position basse) ou avec (position haute)
  3. Ajustement horizontal jusqu’à 63mm pour trouver le centre de gravité

La poignée se fixe sur la cage via 2 vis 1/4″.

Les deux extremities de la poignée comportent une griffe ISO pour permettre de monter un microphone ou un porte moniteur type SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with Cold Shoe Mount 2905

On peut également monter le porte moniteur SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with ARRI-Style Mount 2903 sur l’emplacement Arri ou le 2904 dans les trous 3/8″

I use this top handle either

J’utilise cette poignée supérieure soit

  • Avec le kit XLR sur la griffe ISO , et l’écran interne. Eventuellment avec l’atomes Ninja V placé sur la poignée
  • Seul avec comme micro un Rode Video Micro ou un Wireless Go II sur la griffe iso de la cage. Le micro ECM-B1M ne pouvant être monté sur la griffe iso du boitier dans cette configuration

Setup 1 : Top handle only

The top handle allow you to more easily transport your kit and to use it for low angle shooting. A microphone can be mounted on the left cold shoe of the cage

Setup 1 : Poignée supérieure seule

La poignée supérieure permet un transport aisé du kit et des prises de vue basse. Un micro traditionnel peut être monté sur la griffe ISO à gauche de la cage

Setup 2 : XLR kit on hotshoe

A very nice setup allowing to use the XLR kit on the digital hotshoe, allowing ease of transport and low angle shooting while keeping the flexibility of the swivel screen

Setup 2 : kit XLR sur la griffe ISO

Un très bon setup qui permet d’utiliser le kit XLR sur la griffe ISO en digital et permettant un transport aisé raisin que les prises de vue basse grâce à la poignée , cela tout en préservant la flexibilité de l’écran latéral

6 Conclusion

As usual , Smallrig is offering an extended range of accessories specially designed for each new Sony product. This one is specially designed for the A7C but is also compatible with the extended catalogue of standard SmallRig products like the handles , Monitor holder, Cable clamps…
