1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

Samyang has 11 manual lenses for Sony APSC bodies with E mount like A6000: 7 out of 10 were specially designed for mirrorless and achieve globally very good performances with a small size and reasonable price. All have been tested here

This is a fully manual lenses with aperture control on the lens (with click) and manual focusing ring, No Exif are transmitted to the body

• The focusing ring is large and very easy to handle with ideal dampening

• The build quality is very good all in metal

C’est une optique entièrement manuelle avec contrôle de l’ouverture par bague sur l’objectif et bague de mise au point manuelle. Pas d’exif transmis au boitier

• La bague d’ouverture est large et facile à manipuler avec une fluidité idéale
• La bague d’ouverture est avec clics
• La qualité de construction est très bonne tout en métal

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A6000 with its 24 Mpix

• Centre : Excellent from F1.8 , Outstanding at F2.8-F4, Excellent from F5.6 until F11, F16 very good due to diffraction 
• Corners : very good at F1.8&F2.8 , excellent as from F4 to F8, very good at F11 & good at F16 due to start of diffraction 

An excellent performance !

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A6000, avec ses 24Mpix,

• Centre : Excellent de F1.8 , Superbe de F2.8 à F4 , Excellent de F5.6à F11, La diffraction commence à F16 (Très bon)
• Coins : Très bon à F1.8 et F2.8, Excellent de F4 à F8, La diffraction commence à F11 (Très bon) , F16 bon

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare

• Lens fall off : There is some visible light fall off at F1.8 but it becomes negligible as of F2.8
• Chromatic aberrations are very low  , I did not find any
• Distorsion: very low  in barrel
• Flare resistance is average

There is not yet a Lightroom lens profile for this lens but this should come soon as Lightroom supports all the other Samyang manual lenses

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• Le vignettage : Visible mais relativement contenu à pleine ouverture il disparait vers F2.8
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont quasi nulles
• Distorsion : très faible en barillet
• La résistance au flare est moyenne

Lightroom ne fournit pas encore un profil d’objectif , mais cela ne saurait tarder

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are very good wide open but a little bit less good at F2.8 as we see the 9 sides of the aperture and not a perfect circle
• The background blur is very good , very creamy
• The color rendition is good (but not very good)
• Le bokeh est très bon à pleine ouverture, mais moins à F2.8 car on voit les 9 cotés du diaphragme et non un rond parfait
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très beau et crémeux
• Le rendu des couleurs est bon (mais il n’est pas très bon non plus)

3 Video

• Very nice blurry background can be obtained in video, unfortunately the aperture ring is not clickless
• De très beaux flous d’arrière plans peuvent être obtenus en vidéo, malheureusement la bague d’ouverture est avec clics

5 Conclusion

The Samyang 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS is an excellent lens

Pro’s

• Compact (designed for mirrorless)
• Low price for the performance: 380 euros
• Very good build quality
• It is the only 85mm designed for Sony APS-C
• Fast aperture of F1.8
• Excellent sharpness  throughout the entire field
• No CA
• Distorsion very small
• Minor Vignetting
• Very creamy blurry background
• Very good bokeh circle at F1.8
• Good color rendition

On the “negative” side 

• Bokeh balls not perfect as of 2.8
• Manual lens
• Flare resistance average

There is no real other alternatives in the 85mm range for APS-C you will need to go to a full frame lens if you want another 85mm with e.g. the Sony FE85mm F1.8 with AF

I did a blind test with some friends and many photographers thought it was the Sigma 135mm F1.8 on the A7III ! 

If you are ok with Manual lens the Samyang 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS can deliver you superb portraits with very nice creamy background

5 Conclusion

Le  Samyang 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS est une optique de très haut niveau

Pour

• Compact (conçu pour les hybrides)
• Très grande ouverture de F1.8
• Très bonne qualité de construction
• Prix modéré (380 euros) au vu des performances
• Le seul 85mm conçu pour les Sony APS-C
• Piqué excellent dès F1.8 et très consistant sur tout le champ
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Une distorsion très faible
• Un vignettage mesuré
• Un flou d’arrière plan très doux et crémeux
• Très beau bokeh à pleine ouverture
• Bon rendu des couleurs

Dans les points négatifs

• Des ronds de Bokeh pas parfaitement circulaires à partir de F2.8
• Optique manuelle (pas pour la photo d’action)
• Résistance au flare moyenne

Il n’ya pas de réelle alternatives à cette optique ne APS-C , il faudra regarder du côté des objectifs plein format avec par ex le Sony FE85mm F1.8  (650 euros) avec autofocus 

Lors d’un test à l’aveugle beaucoup ont cru voir le Sigma 135mm F1.8 sur A7III dans les photos prises avec le Samyang 85mm sur A6000

Si les optiques manuelles ne vous font pas peur , alors le Samyang 85mm F1.8 ED UMC CS peut délivrer de superbes portraits avec des fonds flous bien crémeux.
