The build construction is excellent , the lens has a very large rubbered focus ring

La qualité de construction est excellente, l’objectif a une large bague de mise au point

L’objectif est très lourd et très encombrant

• The Lens hood is in carbon fiber and there is a screw to tighten it to the lens

1.2 Autofocus

• In photo, the Autofocus is efficient ,  one of the best of the Sigma Art series 
• The AF is quite fast and is silent, on par with the Sony 85mm F1.4 GM, so not the fastest but fast enough
• Eye Af is working very well

At 100cm = min focusing distance the depth of field is 0.69cm at F1.4  and 1,38cm at f2.8, 2cm at F4, so eye AF is key to have portrait in focus

The tests were made with the A7RIII

If you use a 42Mpix please use at min 1/250s to avoid any blur effect and even 1/500s to be at ease

• En photo , l’autofocus est efficace , l’un des meilleurs de la série Art
• Il est rapide et silencieux , similaire au Sony 85mm F1.4 GM, donc pas le plus rapide mais assez rapide
• L’Af sur les yeux fonctionne sans problème

A 100cm = distance minimale de mise au point le profondeur de champ est de  0.69cm à F1.4 ,  1,38cm à  f2.8, et 2cm à F4, donc un AF sur les yeux efficace est primordial pour du portrait

Les tests on été effectués avec le Sony A7RIII

Sur un capteur fortement pixellisé comme le A7RIII, utilisez de préférence une vitesse d’au moins 1/250s et même 1/500s pour éviter tout flou de mouvement

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix. 

• Centre /  Excellent at F1.4, Outstanding from F2 to F8, Excellent at F11, diffraction at F16
• Corners : Excellent at F1.4 & F2 , Outstanding from F2.8 to F8, Excellent at F11, diffraction at F16 

This is an outsanding performance , it is marginally less outstanding than the Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art . 

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix.

• Centre : Excellent à F1.4 , Superbe de F2 à F8, Excellent à F11 , diffraction à F16

Une performance exceptionnelle , il est un poil moins exceptionnel que le Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art .

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare

• Lens fall off is low and disappear around F2.8
• Very small pincushion distorsion
• Chromatic aberrations are close to 0
• Resistance to flare is ok, but could be better I noticed some loss of contrast in difficult situation

There is a Lightroom lens profile that will correct the lens fall off and distorsion

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• On remarque un vignettage faible à F1.4. Celui-ci disparait à F2.8
• Très faible distorsion en coussinet
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques visibles
• Résistance eau flare correcte. On peut remarquer une perte de contraste face au soleil à pleine ouverture

Il y a un profil de correction Lightroom pour corriger le vignettage et la distorsion

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The background blur is very beautiful and soft , one of the best I have seen
• The separation subject in focus vs blurry background is exceptional, giving a real 3D effect
• Bokeh Balls
  • Very good at F1.4 but become ovals close to borders like most fast aperture prime
  • Excellent at F2 : fully circular
  • Good at F2.8 and F4 : unfortunately the bokeh balls are not perfectly circular and we can see the 9 sides of the apertures blades
• Color rendition is very good 

• Le flou d’arrière plan est très beau et très doux, un des meilleurs que j’ai pu rencontrer
• La séparation entre le sujet et l’arrière plan flou est exceptionnelle donnant un effet 3D saisissant
• Les ronds de Bokeh
  • F1.4 très bons mais comme beaucoup de focales fixes très lumineuses, ils deviennent ovales près des bords à pleine ouverture
  • F2 excellent , tout à fait circulaires
  • F2.8-F4 bons : malheureusement les ronds de bokeh ne sont plus parfaitement circulaires on voit les 9 lames du diaphragme
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

2.4 Comparison with Sigma 135mm F1.8 / comparaison avec le Sigma 135mm F1.8

The sharpness results are too close to make a real difference , you get a difference more due to focusing issues and depth of field

In term of background blur my preference is for the 105mm that achieve a little bit better separation between the model and the background blur and a tinnier depth of field

You don’t really see a big difference over one single photo like below , but having shoot a few hundreds photos with each of the lens you can really notice and feel this difference (see the sample photos of my test of the Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art)

Also the 105mm allows still to shoot indoor and to be closer to the model to direct it , whereas the 135mm is really for outside and force you to be further away

Le piqué entre les 2 objectifs est très proches, les différences sont plus dues à des problèmes de mise au point ou de différences de profondeur de champ

En terme de flou d’arrière plan , ma préférence va au 105mm qui permet pour moi une meilleure séparation entre le sujet et l’arrière plan, ainsi qu’une profondeur de champ encore plus réduite

On ne voit que peu de différence sur les photos de ce chapitre, mais ayant fait quelques centaines de photos avec chacun des objectifs on remarque et sent une réelle différence entre les 2 objectifs. Voir les photos d’exemples de mon test du Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art

Le 105mm permet aussi d’être utilisé à l’intérieur et de rester proche du modèle. Le 135mm demande pas mal de recul et sera principalement utilisé en extérieur et plus loin du modèle

3 Video

Autofocus : This AF is good most of the time but there is some hunting from time to time

Aperture control : to change the aperture you will need to use the body control and this is to be heard in the audio recording and shake will be visible, so a continuous , silent variation of the aperture with a stable image like on the Sony 85 F1.4 GM that has a click less aperture ring is not possible

Autofocus : l’AF est bon le plus souvent mais on a de temps en temps de phénomènes de pompage

Contrôle de l’ouverture : Pour changer d’ouverture il faudra passer par les molettes sur le boitier ce qui est plutôt bruyant et génère aussi un léger mouvement du boitier. Donc une variation continue , silencieuse et stable de l’ouverture pendant le tournage ne sera pas possible. Le Sony 85 F1.4 GM lui dispose d’une bague d’ouverture sur l’objectif qui peut être actionnée sans clics

5 Conclusion

The Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art (1500 euros) is an outstanding optics for portrait and well deserve its nickname of Bokeh Master

• Background blur is exceptional with superb 3D effects
• Sharpness is incredible
• AF is fast and very efficient including for eye AF
• Color rendition is very good
• Distorsion / Lens fall off / CA are close to zero
• Bokeh balls are very good but not perfect when close down to F2.8/F4 (nor perfectly circular)à
• Reasonable price considering performances  
• A min of 1/250s shutter speed will be required
• Built in tripod collar is a very nice idea to support the weight of 1.85 kg
• One of the only flaw is the resistance to flare which is just ok as you can get some loss of contrast in direct sun
• Huge (difficult to put in a standard photo bag), heavy (1,85 kg!) , filter size is uncommon (105mm = expensive)

Before testing the lens, I was convinced , I would not be able  stand the weight of it and that this 105mm was a pure technical demonstration of Sigma capability, but when I saw the results, I was astonished and really started to love the lens ! It is a real “Bokeh” machine to produce wonderful portraits ! Its signature is unique. After a second look at the photos made I finally decided to order the lens for myself

Alternatives

• Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS (1800 euros) : A creamier bokeh and background blur thanks to its Smooth Trans Focus technologies with a more important depth of field F2.8 but a much lower transmission of T5.6.
  • Also capable of proxy photography with a min focusing distance of 56cm
  • The 100mm STF is a more specialized lens capable of superb results (that I personally own) but I will also buy the Sigma 105mm F1.4 for its smaller depth of field
• Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art (1400 euros) : also an exceptional lens but a more classical focal length of 135mm. If you already have a 85mm and wants to get longer the 135mm will give you more reach from a distance
  • Sharpness is a tiny bit better
  • AF is a little bit less good
  • Much lighter (1300g vs 1850g) , less fat in size and a more classical filter (82mm)
  • More practical to use on daily basis
  • Longer distance required vs the 105 mm : so more difficult to discuss with your model

5 Conclusion

Le Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art (1500 euros) est une superbe optique pour les portraits et mérite son titre de “Bokeh Master”

• Le flou d’arrière plan est exceptionnel avec des effets 3D superbes (sujet qui se détache sur un fond flou)
• Le piqué est exceptionnel
• L’autofocus est rapide et efficace y compris avec l’AF sur les yeux
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon
• La distorsion, le vignettage et les AC sont proches de 0
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons mais pas parfaits , en effet vers F2.8/F4 on voit les lamelles du diaphragme
• Le prix est raisonnable au vu des performances
• Le support pour trépied intégré (mais détachable) est bienvenu pour tenir l’objectif lors d’un shooting et contrebalancer le poids de 1,85kg
• Une vitesse élevé min 1/250s sera nécessaire
• Un des points faible est la résistance au flare avec une baisse de contraste face au soleil
• L’autre défaut principal est l’encombrement (difficile à caser dans un sac normal) , le poids et la taille du filtre (105mm = très cher)

Avant de tester cet objectif, j’étais persuadé que le poids serait rédhibitoire et qu’il s’agissait plus d’une prouesse technique de la part de Sigma, que d’un objectif qui apportait vraiment quelque chose, mais après avoir vu les résultats, je suis resté sur le c…. L’objectif a une signature bien à lui et mérite sa place dans le panthéon des meilleurs objectifs disponibles pour notre monture. Et après réexamen des photos prises, j’ai craqué et commandé l’objectif !

Alternatives

• Sony FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS (1800 euros) : Un bokeh et un flou d’arrière plan plus crémeux grâce à la conception Smooth Trans focus technologies, avec une plus importante profondeur de champ (F2.8 max) mais aussi un facteur de transmission très réduit (T5.6) qui impose de monter dans les isos.
  • Le 100 STF permet aussi de descendre à 56cm de distance min de mise au point pour de la proxy photographie
  • Le 100 STF est une optique plus spécialisé que je possède mais cela ne m’empêchera pas d’investir dans le Sigma 105 qui donne des résultats très différents avec des effets de profondeur de champ très réduits
• Sigma 135mm F/1.8 DG HSM Art (1400 euros) : Une optique exceptionnelle ave cune focale de 135mm plus classique. Si vous posséder déjà un 85mm alors un 135mm complètera mieux votre kit avec une focale qui permet du portrait à bonne distance
  • Le piqué est un poil encore meilleur que le 105mm
  • L’AF est un peu moins bon
  • Plus léger 1300g vs 1850g, moins encombrant et avec un diamètre de filtre beaucoup plus classique (82mm)
  • Plus pratique pour usage quotidien
  • Plus de distance requise avec le 135 par rapport au 105 donc plus difficile de dialoguer avec votre modèle
