Please note I could not get the amount version in stock (although it exist) , so I tested a Nikon version + a Kipon adaptor

• The build construction is good, made of high quality plastic
• There is an aperture ring with click, a depth of field scale and a rubbered focus ring, that can be operated smoothly
• The lens hood is quite big.
• The full lens feels quite unbalanced on a Sony A7RIII

Cette fois ci , je n’ai pu avoir la version monture E (pas de stock chez le distributeur) donc j’ai testé la version Nikon avec adaptateur

• La qualité de construction est bonne avec des plastiques de haute qualité
• L’objectif est équipé d’une bague d’ouverture avec clic et d’une bague de mise au point caoutchoutée assez agréable à l’usage
• Le pare soleil est assez imposant
• L’ensemble sur un A7RIII est assez disproportionné et pas très bien équilibré

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : At F1.4 it is average with some softness, it become good at F2 and very good at F2.8 and excellent as of F4 up to F8 , then very good at 11, at F16 we start to see diffration
• Corners : follow the same pattern being a little bit less good than the centre (1 grade) but are reaching the very good level

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre: A F1.4 moyen , un peu mou, , il devient bon à F2 , très bon a F2.8 et Excellent à F4 jusque F8, à F11 très bon, puis la diffraction fait son apparition  à F16
• Coins : l’objectif suit le même comportement tout en étant environ un grade moins bon que le centre. On atteint quand même le grade très bon

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Vignetting is visible from F1.4 to F2.8
• Distorsion is also visible but fortunately there is a Lightroom Lens profile to correct it (to be selected manually as no exif to auto select it)
• Chromatic aberrations are quite low
• Average flare resistance

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage est visible entre F1.4 et F2.8
• La distorsion est visible mais peut se corriger grâce à un profil Lightroom pour cet objectif qu’il faudra toutefois sélectionner manuellement
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles
• Resistance au flare moyenne

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The background is pleasant very creamy, color rendition are OK but a little bit below average (I tested 2 other lenses that day with more vivid colors and contrast) 
• Le flou d’arrière plan est agréable , le rendu des couleurs est correct mais un peu en dessous de la moyenne

3 Video

Nice rendering in video with smooth background blur but colors are a bit faded

Bon rendu en video avec flou d’arrière plan très doux mais  couleurs un peu fades

Not the best day to test ! / Ce n’était pas le meilleur jour pour des tests extérieurs

5 Conclusion

The Samyang 24mm F.1 ED AS IF UMC, is a cheap lens for a F1.4 (430 euros). It has an old design made for DSLR and it is quite huge on Sony A7 serie. It is not the sharpest one but still very usable if you close down the aperture

Pros

• Its optical performances are quite good if you close down to at least F2
• Distorsion is well corrected by Lightroom 
• Cheap

Cons

• At F1.4 it is quite soft
• Lens fall off to be corrected at widest aperture
• Color rendition a little bit on the dull side
• very big

If you have invested in an A9, A7RII or A7RIII , you should get a lens in line with the price tag of your body , I would rather go for 

• Zeiss Batis 25mm F2 (1300 euros) or
• Sony FE 28mm F2 (400 euros)

5 Conclusion

Le Samyang 24mm F1.4 ED AS IF UMC est une optique à petit prix (430 euros) pour une ouverture à F1.4. De conception assez ancienne pour les reflex, elle est très encombrante sur un A7. Ses performance optiques sont bonnes pour autant que l’on ferme vers F2

Pour

• Bon Piqué si l’on ferme à F2 et Excellent à partir de F4
• Bonne construction
• Distorsion corrigés via profil lightroom
• Prix

Contre

• Mou à F1.4
• Vignettage à corriger
• Couleur et contrastes un peu terne comparé à d’autres objectifs
• Très encombrant

Si vous avez investi dans un A9, A7RII ou A7RIII, il vaut mieux investir dans une meilleure optique comme

• Zeiss Batis 25mm F2 (1300 euros) ou
• Sony FE 28mm F2 (400 euros)
