1 Presentation

1.1 Speficifications

The Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro is the second macro made by Voigtlander after their excellent Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar (900 euros) but that was only reaching a 1:2 magnification. It is 30% more expensive, 15% heavier and 10% longer

The build quality is top notch : The lens is fully metallic, focus and aperture ring are very well adjusted, engraving is in the metal. 

The focus ring is a pleasure to use , very large, with inner curves for easy grip with your fingers, with adequate level of dampening and with stops for the minimum focusing distance and the infinity

The ring rotate by an insane 450 ° !

• 90°for infinity to 70cm
• 360° for 70cm to 35cm !!! so very precise for macro position 

The focusing distance is visible in the visor in real time, which is quite handy for this type of lens

The lens extend massively when focusing to close distance

Le Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro est le second objectif Macro de Voigtländer après l’excellent Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar (900 euros), mais qui n’atteignait que le rapport 1:2. Le nouveau 110mm est 30% plus cher, 10% plus long et 15% plus lourd

La qualité des construction est excellente : tout en métal avec les bagues de mises au point et d’ouverture parfaitement ajustées, une gravure des indications dans le métal.

La bague de mise au point est un plaisir à utiliser, très large , avec des renflements concaves pour faciliter la préhension avec les doigts, avec juste ce qu’il faut de résistance pour une mise au point précise et une butée pour la distance minimale de mise au point et l’infini.

La bague de mise au point tourne sur plus de 450° !

• 90° de l’infini à 70cm
• 360° de 70cm à 35cm !! donc très précise en position macro

La distance de mise au point est transmise au boitier en temps réel ce qui est un vrai plus pour ce genre d’optique

L’objectif s’allonge très fort en position macro

1.2 Aperture ring / Bague d’ouverture

• The aperture ring is at back of the lens,  it is quite small and in the tiniest part of the lens next to the mount so it is quite difficult to manipulate it without touching the focusing ring. I preferred the design of the 65mm where the aperture ring was at the front (see below picture) 
• The Aperture is changed exclusively by rotating this aperture ring and can not be controlled via the body
• Aperture ring has clicks for each 1/3 stops and has no position to become click less for video (unlike the Voigtlander 10,12, 15mm)
• La bague d’ouverture est située à l’arrière de l’objectif prés de la monture du boitier dans la partie la plus fine de l’objectif, elle est assez difficile d’accès et on touche régulièrement la bague de mise au point en voulant régler l’ouverture, je préfère encore le design du 65mm avec la bague d’ouverture à l’avant de l’objectif
• L’ouverture se change exclusivement avec cette bague et non via le boitier
• La bague d’ouverture se modifie par cran de 1/3 et produit un clic. Contrairement au Voigtländer 10, 12, 15mm elle n’a pas de position fluide pour la video

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

The lens is showing an exceptional sharpness as from F2.5 and outstanding as of F4 and this  across the whole frame

I tested a lot of lens and there is almost always a significative drop of sharpness in the corners and the borders wide open: Here not at all! 

So certainly one of the best lens ever made for Sony FE in term of sharpness together with the Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar and the Sony 90mm F2.8 macro G OSS !

In sumary Lens sharpness exceptional across the whole frame and only deacreasing as from F16 due to diffraction

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

L’objectif montre un piqué excellent dès F2.5 et superlatif dès F4 et ce du centre jusqu’au coins ! J’ai testé beaucoup d’objectifs mais presque tous montraient un performance significativement moins bonne dans les coins à pleine ouverture. Ici on a du mal a savoir si l’on est au centre ou dans un coin ! Aucun souci avec des portraits décentrés

Cet objectif est sans doute une des meilleurs optiques jamais produites pour le système Sony FE en terme de piqué  avec le Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar et le Sony 90mm F2.8 macro G OSS

En résumé un piqué exceptionnel sur tout le champ et à toutes les ouverture et une baisse de piqué à F16 due à la diffraction

2.2Vignetting / distorsion / Chromatic aberrations / flare

• Vignetting is present at F2.5 and progressively decrease to disappear completely at F8
• There is a little bit of pincushion distorsion
• No CA at all 
• You can get nice sunstars when pointing at the sun
• Very good resistance to flare

There is not yet a Lightroom profile for this lens , but this should come in coming months

2.2 Vignettage / distorsion / Aberrations chromatiques / flare

• Le vignettage est présent à F2.5 et ne disparait complètement que vers F8
• Légère distorsion en coussinet
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Très bonne résistance au flare
• L’objectif peut produire des étoiles à 10 branches avec diaphragme fermé à F11 quand il est pointé directement vers une source lumineuse .

Il n’y a pas encore de profil optique en Lightroom mais cela ne saurait tarder

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The color rendition is excellent
• The background blur is very soft and pleasant
• The Bokeh
  • is very good at F2.5 well circular and ovals in the border.
  • The bokeh ball in itself is very soft and pleasant
  • Wen closed to F3.2 we start to see the 10 shaped polygon aperture.  What is annoying is that even with aperture closed down from the bokeh balls stays ovals at the border until F6.3 giving some strange polygons at the border
• Le rendu des couleurs est superbe, l’objectif a une vrai signature tout comme les Zeiss
• Le rendu du flou d’arrière plan est très doux et plaisant
• Le bokeh
  • Il est très bon à pleine ouverture F2.5 bien circulaire au centre et ovoïdes sur les bords.
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont doux et agréable
  • Dès F3.2 on commence à voir un polygone à 10 côtés, ce qui est dérangeant c’est que meme en fermant l’ouverture on garde un effet ovoïdes sur les bords jusque F6.3 ce qui donne des polygones de forme bizarre sur les bords

2.4 Macro 

The macro performance is excellent and optimal sharpness is between F4 and F8, precise focusing is facilitated by the 360° required to go from 70cm to 35cm

Le rendu en macro est excellent avec des performances optimales entre F4 et F8. La mise au point est facilité par l’énorme course de mise au point qui est de 360° de 70cm à 35cm

3 Video

The rendering in very good for portrait with beautiful background blur. The in body stabilisation help to have smooth video. However the lens has no clickless aperture and the position of the aperture ring makes it difficult to manipulate with shaking the camera

Le redu est très bon pour les portraits avec de superbes flous d’arrière plans. La stabilisation du capteur aide pour avoir des vidéos bien stables. Par contre l’objectif n’a pas de bague d’ouverture sans clics et la position de la bague d’ouverture rend difficile sa manipulation sans faire bouger le boitier

5 Conclusion

With the Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro Apo Lanthar (1200 euros) , Voigtlander take the good recipe of the Voigtlander 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar and make it even better

We retain exceptional sharpness of the 65mm but we add a better focal length for macro and a 1:1 ratio

The lens can easily compete with the Sony 90mm F2.8 macro G OSS (1100 euros) and does even a little bit better in term of sharpness.

For real macro where you are anyway in manual focus its focusing ring is more precise than the Sony thanks to its 360° rotation from 70cm to 35cm

The lens is also very good at portraits with beautiful blurry background but the lens is maybe too sharp for portraits

Pros

• Exceptional sharpness across the whole frame wide open at F2.5
• 1:1 magnification ratio
• Extremely precise manual focusing at macro
• Short working distance ideal for macro : 35cm
• Very color rendition and contrast
• Very good , soft and pleasant blurry background
• Very good Bokeh at F2.5
• Build like a tank
• Exif and working distance transmitted to the body

Cons

• Thin and badly placed aperture ring (difficult to turn it without touching the focusing ring)
• Bokeh balls very good wide open but quickly become 10 shaped and ovals near border even when close down with some weird form at the borders

5 Conclusion

Avec le Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro Apo Lanthar (1200 euro), Voigtländer reprend le meilleur du Voigtlander 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar (900 euros) et l’améliore encore

On garde le piqué exceptionnel du 65mm mais on a une focale plus appropriée pour la macro et un rapport 1:1

Cet objectif pourra sans problème rivaliser avec le Sony 90mm F2.8 macro G OSS (1100 euros) et fait meme un peu mieux en terme de piqué

Pour de la macro où l’on travaille quasi tout le temps en mise au point manuelle , la bague de mise au point du Voigtländer est beaucoup plus précise que celle du Sony 90mm grâce à sa rotation sur près de 360° entre 70cm et 35cm

Les portraits sont aussi très réussi avec cette optique avec de très beaux flous d’arrière plan mais attention au piqué extrême, peu avantageux pour la peau

Pour

• Piqué exceptionnel sur tout le champ dès la pleine ouverture à F2.5
• Rapport de 1:1 pour la macro
• Bague de mise au point très précise en macro : 360° pour 70cm à 35cmm
• Distance minimum de mise au point de 35cm pour un 110mm idéale pour la macro
• Rendu des couleurs excellent
• Superbe flou d’arrière plan
• Très beau Bokeh à F2.5
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Une excellente qualité de construction
• Les exifs et la distance de mise au point sont transmises au boitier grâce aux contacts électroniques

Contre

• Bague d’ouverture situé à l’arrière de l’objectif très près de la monture et difficile d’accès sans toucher la bague de mise au point
• Bokeh polygonal 10cotés dès F3.2 et de forme ovoïdes sur les bords jusque F6.3
