1 Presentation

1.1 Specifications

The Samyang 35mm F1.4 AF II , is a new version of the Samyang 35 mm F1.4 AF,

Overall the build quality is very good , high quality plastic and a very nice textured focusing ring but is below Sony GM or Sigma ones. The lens is quite heavy in the hand at 659g

Ergonomics are quite good with a custom mode button allowing to switch the focusing ring from focus to aperture control. there is also a focus hold button (programmed via the body). Unfortunately there is no AF/MF button

Le Samyang 50mm F1.4 AF II , est une nouvelle version du Samyang 35 mm F1.4 AF,

La qualité de construction est très bonne avec des plastiques de qualité et une bague de mise au point texturée très agréable, mais on est en deçà d’un Sigma ou d’un Sony GM. L’objectif est assez lourd et imposant en main

L’ergonomie est bonne avec un bouton de maintien de mise au point paramétrable sur le boitier et un commutateur de mode qui permet de basculer la bague de mise au point en une bague d’ouverture sans clics très pratique en vidéo. Malheureusement pas de bouton AF/MF

1.2 AF performance / Performances AF

• AF is fast and accurate 95% of the time
• I had unexpected erratic behaviour where the lens did not focus anymore correctly and I had to power off the camera remove the battery and all went fine back again : this happened on A7RIV and I suppose can be easily corrected by a firmware fix
• It term of AF in burst mode it is good except with subject at close distance where I had often lost focus (see below video)
• l’AF est rapide et efficace 95% du temps,
• J’ai eu quelques comportements erratiques lors de mes tests avec un AF qui faisait la mise au point complètement décalée. Un arrêt du boitier (A7RIV) et ejection de la batterie a permis de résoudre ce problème. Un problème de jeunesse qui sera certainement résolu par une mise a jour firmware
• En rafale l’AF suit bien pour les sujets lointains mais perd le point quand le sujet s’approche de près. (voir dans la vidéo ci dessous

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV  with its 61Mpix

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• Performances are good wide ope on A7RIV but nothing fancy , you reach excellence as of F2.8
• Corners are not so good and only reach excellence at F5.6
• Globally a good performance. The lens will be more at ease on 24Mpix
• Les performances sont bonnes à pleine ouverture mais rien d’extraordinaire. On atteint l’excellence vers f2.8
• Les coins ne sont pas aussi bons et on atteint l’excellence seulement à F5.6
• Globalement une performance juste bonne. L’optique sera plus à l’aise sur un capteur de 24Mpix

Centre / Centre

Corners / Coins

Sharpness for distant subjet / Piqué en mise au point lointaine

• Same behavior : only good wide open and excellent at F5.6. CA are visible wide open
• Même comportement pour les sujets lointains : bon à pleine ouverture et excellent à F5.6. On peut voir des Ac à pleine ouverture

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

• Sharpness for portraits is good wide open and you see a clear boost by closing at F2.8, very good rendering for skin tones and the right level of contrast
• Le piqué pour les portraits est bon à pleine ouverture , mais on gagne significativement à fermer à F2.8 ; très bon rendu des tons chairs et le bon niveau de contraste

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortsion, flare, sunstars

• Vignetting is strong at F1.4 , and disappears around F4
• Distortion is small in barrel  
• Chromatic aberrations are quite high
• Resistance to flare is good for a 35mm
• There are nice sunstars with aperture closed down
• Coma is low for astrophotography
• There is not yet a Lightroom Lens profile for this lens but this should come

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

• Le vignettage est très présent à F1.4 et disparait à F4
• La distorsion est faible en barillet
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont assez présentes
• La résistance au flare est bonne pour un 35mm
• Des effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus vers F16 mais ne sont pas très définis
• Le Coma est faible pour l’astrophotographie
• Il n’y a pas encore de profil Lightroom pour cet objectif mais cela devrait venir dans les prochains mois

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are good : well circular at F1.4 in the centre and with oval shape at the borders. There are some light traces of onion rings . Unfortunately when you close down you see as of F4 the 9 shapes of the aperture blades and some fringing at the border
• The background blur is very good in many situations but can become nervous with busy background
• Color rendition is good , natural and with a good balanced contrast
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons: bien circulaires à F1.4 au centre et avec des ovales sur les bords. On eut remarquer de légères traces de tranches d’oignons. Malheureusement quand on ferme l’ouverture, on voit à partir de f4 un polygone à neuf côtés et non plus un rond.On remarque aussi des franges colorées sur les bords
• Le flou d’arrière plan est plaisant et très doux dans beaucoup de situations Mais peut devenir nerveux avec des arrières plans fouillis
• Le rendu des couleurs est bon: naturel avec un bon contraste

3 Video

• Very good results in term of sharpness , bokeh, background blur smoothness and color rendition in video, very nice rendering for portraits
• The focus ring that can be set to a clickless aperture ring is very convenient
• AF works perfectly
• Focus breathing is very low : a very good point
• Très bons résultats en vidéo avec un très bon piqué un flou d’arrière plan doux, de beaux ronds de Bokeh et un rendu des couleurs très naturel, globalement de très beaux portraits peuvent être obtenus
• On peut avoir une bague d’ouverture sans clics pour la vidéo grâce au commutateur
• L’AF fonctionne parfaitement
• Focus breathing très faible : un très bon point

4 Comparison with other 35mm F1.4

There are many 35mm for E Mount (more than 20) , if we concentrate on the ones F1.4 with AF we have

Il y a beaucoup de 35mm pour la monture E (plus de 20) , si l’on se concentre sur ceux conçus pour les hybrides avec AF on a

• Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN (849 euros)
• Sony 35mm F1.4 GM (1700 euros)
• Samyang 35mm F1.4 AF (450 euros)
• Sigma 35mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art (750 euros)
• Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 Zeiss (1400 euros)

If you are looking for more compact and affordable options then the best other 35mm (<700 euros) are in my order of preference

• Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary (619 euros)
• Samyang 35mm F1.8 (400 euros)
• Yongnuo YN 35mm F2S DF DSM (200$)
• Sony FE 35mm F1.8 (700 euros) (excellent but very harsh for skin tones and busy background blur / Excellent mais très dur avec les tons de peau et flou d’arrière plan nerveux)

From a specifications perspective, the Samyang 35mm F1.4 II is very close to the V1 but with much imporved ergonomics and build quality and better AF. Its custom mode is a big plus in video which makes it on par with the Sony GM or The Sony Zeiss in term of click less Aperture ring. Unfortunately its AF is below the one of the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN and the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM. Its price is one of the less expensive of the modern 35 F1.4 with AF

D’un point de vue spécifications, le Samyang 35mm f1.4 AF II est très proche de la version 1 avec une ergonomie nettement améliorée , un meilleur AF et une meilleure qualité de construction. Malheureusement l’AF bien que bon est nettement moins bon que ceux des Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN et du Sony 35mm F1.4 GM. Son prix en fait un des moins cher des 35mm F1.4 avec AF moderne

Sharpness / Piqué

• The Sony 35mm F1.4 GM is the sharpest of all, closely followed by the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art , the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN is closely following up
• The Samyang 35mm F1.4 II does not do significantly better than the V1 and is well below the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN that is marginally more expensive (850 euros vs 700 euros)
• Many 35mm F1.8 do better than the Samyang in term of sharpness, in particular the Samyang 35mm F1.8 (400 euros)
• Le Sony 35mm F1.4 GM est le plus piqué de tous suivi de très près par le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art, le Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN suit de très près
• Le samyang 35mm F1.4 AF II n’améliore que peu les performances vis à vis de la v1 et est très en dessous du Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN
• Beaucoup de 35mm F1.8 font mieux que le Samyang 35mm F1.4 en particulier le Samyang 35mm F1.8 (400 euros)

Background Blur & Bokeh Balls / Flous d’arrière plan et Ronds de Bokeh

• Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art, the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM and the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN have very similar very high quality bokeh balls, smooth background blur and color rendition. In a blind test I can’t differentiate them in 80% of the cases
• The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art has however still the edge and is a little bit better for rendering in portraits with a more subtle and poetic rendering of portraits , a little bit better pop up effect with smoother transition and the F1.2 that allow a tiny bit more blur and smaller depth of field
• The Samyang 35mm F1.4 is very good but a bit below the Sigma and Sony (more onion rings and more nervous background blur)
• Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art, le Sony 35mm F1.4 GM, et le Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN ont tous de très beaux ronds de bokeh, un excellent flou d’arrière plan très doux et un très bon rendu des couleurs. Dans un test à l’aveugle je ne peux les différencier dans 80% des cas
• Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art a quand même un léger avantage pour les portraits avec un rendu un peu plus doux et poétique, un effet 3D légèrement meilleur, des transitons légèrement plus douces et une ouverture F1.2 qui permet d’isoler encore un peu plus le sujet
• Le Samyang 35mm F1.4 II a aussi de très bons résultats mais inférieur aux Sigma et Sony : un peu plus de tranches d’oignons dans les ronds de bokeh et un flou d’arrière plan légèrement plus nerveux

Portraits

• The below portraits show the rendering difference between the lenses
• Globally the Sigma F1.2 offer a little more smoother rendering and more gentle pop up effect for portraits
• The Samyang has the less soft background blur
• Les portraits ci-dessous montrent les différences de rendu entre les optiques
• Le Sigma F1.2 offre globalement un rendu un peu plus doux et un effet 3D avec des transitions légèrement plus douces
• Le Samyang a le flou d’arrière plan le moins doux

Distortion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

• The Sony 35mm F1.4 GM has the least distortion , the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art has more distortion but there is already a Lightroom lens profile to correct it, the Sigma 35 F1.4 DG DN and the Samyang 35mm f1.4 II are the less good one on this criteria
• The vignetting is strong on the Sony GM and the Sigma 35 F1.4 DG DN and the Samyang 35mm II. The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art is the best one
• The CA level on the Sigma 35 F1.4 DG DN and the Sony GM are better than on the Sigma F1.2. The Samyang 35mm F1.4 II is the less good one
• The resistance to flare is a better on the Sony GM and on the Sigma 35 F1.4 closely followed by the Samyang 35mm F1.4. The Sigma 35mm F1.2 is the less good one

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• Le Sony 35mm F1.4 GM est l’optique qui a le moins de distorsion, suivi par le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art qui dispose déjà d’un profil de correction Lightroom, les Sigma 35 F1.4 DG DN et Samyang 35mm F1.4 II sont les moins bons sur ce critère
• Le vignettage est un peu plus marqué à pleine ouverture sur le Sony GM / Sigma 35 F1.4 DG DN / Samyang 35mm F1.4 II . Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art est le meilleur sur ce critère
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont plus faibles sur le Sony GM et le Sigma 35 F1.4. Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art est 3eme et le Samyang 35mm F1.4 AF II is the less good one
• La résistance au flare est meilleure sur le Sony GM et le Sigma 35 F1.4, suivi de près par le Samyang 35mm f1.4. Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art est le moins bon sur ces critères

Autofocus

AF is excellent for all lenses for static subjects ; fast precise and quiet , but when it comes to fast moving subjects the Sigma and the Sony are clearly superior to the Samyang . Also the Sony GM is the fastest and the only one compatible with the 30fps of the A1. Let’s note a bug with V1 of the firmware on A1 which cause over 8 hours of shooting : unexpected erratic AF 3-4 times over 30 min persil solved by removing the battery. Firmware upgrade should arrange this

L’AF est excellent sur toutes les optiques sur les sujets statiques : très rapide, précis et efficace. Sur les sujets en mouvement les Sigma et Sony sont nettement supérieurs au Samyang. Le Sony est le plus rapide et le seul compatible avec les 30 images/sec du Sony A1. A noter j’ai eu sur une période de 8 heures des bugs 3-4 fois sur une période de 30 min avec un AF erratique. En enlevant la batterie a chaque fois le problème était résolu. Un bug qui sera certainement corrigé par un firmware

Video :

All are excellent in video and have the possibility of having a click less aperture ring. However there is one key difference the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art and the Samyang 35mm F1.4 II have very little focus breathing so perfect for video, the Sony GM and the Sigma F1.4 have quite strong focus breathing.

Toutes ces optiques sont excellentes en vidéo et offrent la possibilité d’avoir une bague d’ouverture sans clics. Mais il y a une différence clé : Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art et le Samyang 35mm f1.4 II ont très peu de focus breathing donc parfait en vidéo et le Sony GM et le Sigma 35 F1.4 en ont beaucoup

Conclusion

The Samyang is priced at 700 euros vs 830 euros for the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN which is much better in term of sharpness , has a real aperture ring and a better AF for subjects in movements. I see therefore no reason to buy the Samyang 35 unless for video thanks to its low focus breathing

If the price goes down to 450-500 then it will be a good price for the performances. Also if you don’t need the f1.4 the Samyang 35mm F1.8 offers better performances (better sharpness) for 400 euros in a more compact and much lighter format

In term of best 35mm The Sigma and Sony are excellent and in 80% of the case you can not distinguish them , they all have excellent sharpness, smooth background blur, excellent bokeh balls, color rendering ….

• The Sony 35mm F1.4 GM will be the sharpest (so better for street or landscape), lightest, most compact, best in resistance to flare CA , distortion
• The Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art will be best for poetic portraits and video (lower focus breathing)
• The Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN is very close to the GM for 50% less in price. A bargain !

Le Samyang est à 700 euros contre 830 euros pour le Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN qui est bien meilleur en terme de piqué , a une vrai bague d’ouverture et un meilleur Af pour les sujets en mouvements. Je ne vois donc aucune raison d’acheter le Samyang 35mm , sauf peut être pour la vidéo grâce au faible focus breathing du Samyang

En terme de meilleur 35mm F1.4, les Sigma et Sony sont excellents et dans 80% des cas on ne peut les distinguer ils ont tous un piqué excellent, un flou d’arrière plan très doux , de très bon ronds de bokeh, un très bon rendu des couleurs…

• Le Sony 35mm F1.4 GM est le plus piqué (donc meilleur en photo de rue et de paysage) , le plus léger, le plus compact , le meilleur en terme d’aberrations chromatiques de resistance au flare et de distorsion
• Le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art sera le meilleur pour des portraits poétiques et en vidéo (faible focus breathing)
• Le Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG DN est très proche du Sony GM pour un prix 50% inférieur, une affaire !

5 Sample of Photos / Exemples de Photos

Good results globally : sharpness is good to excellent , background blur is sometimes soft but sometimes also nervous, color rendering is pleasant, skins are very well rendered, AF is efficient for static subject but less for subjects in movements

Bons résultats globalement: bon à excellent piqué, flou d’arrière plan très doux tantôt doux, tantôt nerveux, beau rendu des couleurs, très naturel. Le rendu des peaux en portrait est très bon. AF efficace sur les sujets statiques mais moins sur les sujets en mouvements
