1 Introduction

1.1 Atomos Ninja V

The Atomos Ninja V (320g – 830 euros)  is a compact external recorder with a full HD screen of 6,1″ (and not 5″) It is capable of recording in 4K, 60p 10 bits HDR directly in ProRes or DnxHR.

The screen has a dynamic range of 10+ stops and a contrast of 1000 nits, the menu interface is usable via the touchscreen only

You will need to add an SSD (150-450 euros) : either a standard one that will be a bit larger  in width than the Atomos itself or a mini SSD (more expensive). A 1To is capable of recording up to 2h30 of 4K video

You will also need to add batteries like a Sony NP-F750 (206g) or a NP-F970 (285g)

Why using a cage for the Atomos Ninja V ?

• In term of mounting , the Ninja V has 2 mounting points Arri Rosette at the bottom and at the top in the middle that’s all
• The SSD disk is plugged in but nothing locked in, there is a risk of unplugging it by mistake
• There is also no clamp to fix HDMI cables

The SmallRig 2209 Atomos Ninja V cage was designed to help in those matters

L’Atomos Ninja V (320g – 830 euros nu) est un enregistreur externe compact avec un écran full HD de 6,1″ (et non 5″). Il est capable d’enregistrer en 4K, 60p , 10 bits HDR directement en ProRes ou en DnxHR

L’écran a une Dynamique très élevée de plus de 10 stops et un contraste de 1000 nits, le tout se pilote grâce à l’écran tactile.

Il vous faudra rajouter un disque dur SSD (150-450 euros): soit un standard qui dépassera alors un peu de la largeur de l’Atomos soit un mini SSD spécialement conçu pour mais plus cher. Un. SSD de 1To sera capable d’enregistrer 2h30 de vidéo 4K

Il vous faudra également une ou plusieurs batteries du type NP-F970 (285g) ou NP-F750 (206g)

Pourquoi utiliser une cage pour l’Atomos Ninja V?

• En terme de fixation, le Ninja V peut se monter soit par au dessus soit par en dessous via des points d’ancrage Arri Rosette, c’est tout
• Le disque dur SSD est juste inséré dans l’Atomos et n’est pas “fixé” on n’est donc pas à l’abri d’une déconnexion accidentelle
• Il n’y a pas fixation pour empêcher les câbles HDMI de se décrocher

La Cage SmallRig pour Atomos V , ref 2209 se veut conçue pour palier à ses défauts

2.1 Specifications

As usual with SmallRig , the build quality is very good and it perfectly fit with the Atomos Ninja V

• Nato Rails at top and bottom for additional way of fixing it like BallHead magic arm 
• Drive locks to fix the master caddy SSD holder

• 2 M3 screws on the left side for mounting
• Compatible with the Atomos original Sunhood

Comme d’habitude chez SmallRig , la qualité de construction est très bonne et la cage épouse parfaitement les conteurs de l’Atomos Ninja V

2.2 Mounting / Montage

The Atomos Ninja V is fixed to the cage thanks to 3 screws : top and 2 on the left side. Quite strange to only fix it by 2 sides but once done it does not move at all 

L’Atomos Ninja V est fixé à la cage grâce à 3 vis : une sur le dessus et 2 sur le coté gauche. Un peu bizarre de fixer l’ensemble juste par deux côtés mais force est de constater que l’ensemble est bien solidaire

• The Drive locks are mounted on small springs and rotate to securely lock the SSD Drive
• The HDMI clamp is a classical one
• Les fixations pour disque SSD sont montées sur ressort et pivotent pour sécuriser le disque
• Le protège cable HDMI est classique

Adapted design that does not hide the heat ventilator

3 Sunhood for Atomos V 2269

You can opt for the outrageous Atomos Sunhood costing more than 100 euros or for the SmallRig one, or add 5 euros and get the SmallRig one that is well designed and effective

The cage has been specially designed with spaces to slip easily the scratches of the SmallRig sunhood

If you have already the original Atomos sunhood,  it can be fixed to the cage without any issues

Pour le pare soleil , vous pouvez optez pour celui d’origine vendu à 109 euros ! ou rajouter 5 euros à la cage SmallRig et optez pour celui de SmallRig. Ce dernier est facile à monter et tout a fait efficace

La cage SmallRig a été spécialement conçue avec des passants pour les scratches du pare Soleil SmallRig

Si vous avez déjà le pare soleil Atomos d’origine sachez que celui ci se fixe sans problèmes sur la cage SmallRig

4 In Use

I have used The Atomos Ninja V Cage with the SmallRig 2238 Half Cage for A7III (87 euros) and the SmallRig 1688 NATO Cheese Handle (85 Euros) with excellent results (Cage tested here, and Handle here )

The global setup is not light but is very well balanced and it is not the Atomos Cage that add so much more weight to the setup

J’ai utilisé la cage pour Atomos Ninja V avec le demi cage SmallRig 2238  pour A7III (87 euros) et la Poignée NATO latérale 1688 (85 euros), cela avec d’excellents résultats (Cage testée ici et poignée là)

L’ensemble n’est pas des plus léger mais est bien équilibré et ce n’est pas la cage qui fait une grande différence dans le poids de l’ensemble

5 Conclusion

For 119 euros you have a full kit cage + sunhood instead of 109 euros for the Atomos sunhood

The design is very well done and improve the fixation of the SSD and HDMI cable and offer more mounting options

The main drawback is the weight (196g) , but considering you already put an heavy battery on it if you use a NP-F970 (285g) or NP-F750 (206g), you can further add 200g !

The SmallRig 2269 Sunhood for Atomos V is also very well designed and easy to mount unmount

Pour 119 euros chez SmallRig on a un kit complet cage + pare soleil pour le prix du pare soleil Atomos d’origine (109 euros)

La conception est très bonne : la fixation du disque SSD est améliorée ainsi que celle des cables HDMI, les possibilités de montage divers sont multipliées

Le principal inconvénient est le poids (196g) , mais comme il faut de toute façon monter une batterie assez lourde (NP-F970 285g ou NP-F750 206g) on est plus à 200g près !

Le pare soleil pour Atomos V de SmallRig 2269 est aussi assez bien conçu et facile à monter démonter
