This 65mm F2.8 macro X 2 , is their first dedicated to APSC and the equivalent of their Laowa 100mm F2.8 Macro in full frame

We almost have a traditional macro lens but with a 2:1 magnification ratio
The build quality is very good
The focusing ring takes 270° to focus from 16.5cm to infinity giving a very precise control in macro , this is much better than the 135° of the Laowa 100mm F2.8 Macro
The dampening of the focusing ring is also good
The lens can focus a bit beyond infinity so be ware to still focus precisely for distant subject and do not trust the focus stop
The focusing ring has mark for the distance and also show the macro reproduction ratio (see below pictures)
The Aperture ring is with click but with Smooth focusing in between click so still good for video transition between 2 apertures
The focusing distance is quite small and this combined with the 2:1 allow to come really close to your subject. Shooting at that distance and magnification impose to do some focus stacking due to the extremely thin depth of field
The lens is purely manual which is ok for macro lenses but lack also EXIF transmission which is annoying in post processing and does not allow to use fully sensor stabilisation if you have a A6500 / A6000 or use the lens on A7 series (Manuel setting of stabilisation is however possible)

La qualité de construction est très bonne
La bague de mise au point tourne sur 270° pour passer de 16,5cm à l’infini et est bien amorti ce qui est beaucoup mieux que les 135° du Laowa 100mm F2.8 Macro
La bague de mise au point bute un peu après l’infini donc attention à la mise au point à l’infini
La bague de mise au point montre l’échelle de distance et le rapport de grossissement fort utile en macro
La bague d’ouverture est avec clics mais permet une variation continue entre clics
Le rapport de grossissement de 2:1 impose l’utilisation d’un rail macro et de la technique de stacking , la profondeur de champ à 2:1 étant < 0,1mm
L’objectif est purement manuel ce qui ne gêne pas du tout pour un objectif macro, par contre pas de transmission des EXIFs ce qui est plus embêtant ce qui ne permet pas d’utiliser au mieux la stabilisation capteur quand elle est dispo sur votre boitier (le réglage manuel de la stabilisation est possible)
2 Optical performances / Performances optiques
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A6000, with its 24 Mpix
The Centre performances is excellent wide open and the entire frame is excellent at F5.6
Les tests on été effectués sur un A600, avec ses 24Mpix
La performance au centre est excellente dès la pleine ouverture, pour les coins il faut fermer vers F5.6 pour atteindre le même résultat

2.2 Vignetting / distorsion / chromatic aberrations / flare / sunstars
- Vignetting is almost invisible at F2.8
- Distorsion is close to 0
- Chromatic aberrations are close to zero
- The resistance to flare is average with frequent flares at F4-F16 and some purple halo at F2.8 when facing the sun
- The sunstars (18 branches) can be obtained easily when closing the aperture to F16
There is no Lightroom profile for this lens
2.2 Vignettage / distorsion / Aberrations chromatiques / flare / effet d’étoiles
- Le vignettage est presque invisible à F2.8
- La distorsion est nulle
- Les aberrations chromatiques sont quasi nulles
- La résistance au flare est moyenne , on aura souvent du flare entre F4 et F16 et un peu de halo pourpre à F2.8 face au soleil
- L’objectif peut produire des étoiles à 18 branches quand l’ouverture est fermée à F16

2.3 Bokeh / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
- The color rendition is good and natural
- The background blur is very soft and pleasant
- The Bokeh balls are good overall but best to be used wide open
- Very good at F2.8 circulars or ovals
- starting to be edgy at F4 and sometimes with some border fringing but never with onion rings
- Showing the 9 Apertures blades at f5.6
- Le rendu des couleurs est bon et naturel
- Le rendu du flou d’arrière plan est très doux et plaisant
- Les ronds de bokeh sont bons globalement
- Très bon à F2.8 circulaires ou ovales
- On commencent à voir les cotés du diaphragme et parfois une frange sur les bords des ronds de Bokeh. Mais aucune trace de tranche d’oignons
- A F5.6 on voit clairement un polygone à 9 cotés

2.4 Macro
The macro performance is very good with optimum at F2.8-F4. , Performances starts already to decrease at F5.6 due to diffraction. In practice we will use F4 to gain some depth of field
Les performances en macro sont très bonnes avec un optimum a F2.8-F4 , malheureusement les performances diminuent dès F5.6 à cause de la diffraction. En pratique on utilisera F4 pour avoir à la fois le meilleur piqué et un peu de profondeur de champ

Focus Stacking / Stacking de photos
With a very small depth of field at 1:1 or 2:1 , the usage of a macro rail for doing stacking of photos is a must. I have used the Leofoto MP150 Macro rail and a remote wired shutter
We get excellent performances
Avec une profondeur de champ minuscule entre 1:1 et 2:1 , un rail macro et la technique de focus stacking est un must. Pour les essais j’au utilisé un rail Leofoto MP150 et une déclencheur filaire

3 Video
In Video , the Laowa can provide very good results but bokeh balls are edgy and if you are not using a A6500 or 6600 the lack of optical stabilisation makes the video a little bit shaky. Color rendering and background blur are very nice. The Aperture ring is with click but offer a continuous movement in between clicks
En video Le Laowa fournit de très bon résultats mais les ronds de bokeh présentent des bords marqués. Si on l’utilise sur un A6xxx non stabilisé , le manque de stabilisation optique est un handicap avec des vidéos un peu saccadées à main nue. Le rendu des couleurs et le flou d’arrière plan sont très bons. La bague de diaphragme est crantée mais avec une variation douce et continue entre clics

5 Conclusion
The Laowa CF 65mm CA-Dreamer 2X Macro (400$ / 529 euros) provide excellent results both for macro and for portraits

- Sigma 60mm F2.8 DN (200 euros) : if you look for a 60mm equivalent but not macro and with AF the Sigma 60mmm F2.8 offer good performances for a small price
- Sony E 30mm F3.5 Macro (200 euros) : a focal length that is less suited for macro and performances well below the Laowa. The lens need to be closed down to F8 to reach excellent performances
5 Conclusion
Le CF 65mm CA-Dreamer 2X Macro (400$ / 529 euros) fournit d’excellent résultats à la fois en macro et en portraits
