1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

Thypoch is a Chinese company producing high end built lenses mostly for Leica M mount with with some vintage look but started to do some E mount and cinema version of their lenses

They are priced quite high (700-1000 euros) for Chinese lenses but they look for highest possible build quality and aesthetic

Thypoch est une compagnie chinoise qui produit des optiques avec un haut niveau de qualité principalement pour la monture Leica M , mais qui s’est récemment lancé dans les optiques E avec des version photos et cinéma

Le prix est assez élevé (700-1000 euros) mais en ligne avec le haut niveau de qualité de fabrication et le soin apporté au look des optiques

The Lens is compact and light for a cinema lens

The build quality is excellent. The focusing throw is very well dampened and easy to use and turns 210°

There are geared rings for use with follow focus units


There are so shims provided if you need to adjust the infinity focus (not required on my lens)

La qualité de construction est excellente. La bague de mise au point est bien amortie et tourne sur 210°

Les bagues sont crantées pour une utilisation avec des unités de follow focus

Des Shims sont fournis pour un ajustement de la mise au point à l’infini si nécessaire (pas requis sur mon exemplaire)

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

The tests were mainly made on a Sony A7RV, with its 61 Mpix

Les tests ont été effectués principalement sur un Sony A7RV avec ses 61Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

  • In the centre : the sharpness is very good wide open and become excellent as of T2
  • In the corners : sharpness are bad and only become acceptable at T11
  • Globally a mixed performance as fo wide angle you will often shoot landscape , or full street and you want border to be sharp
  • Au centre : le piqué est très bon dès la pleine ouverture , et excellent dès T2
  • Dans les coins : le piqué est mauvais et ne devient acceptable que vers T11
  • Une performance mitigée car en paysage ou grand angle l’uniformité du piqué sur le champ est importante

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

  • The sharpness is good wide open and very good at T2, skin rendering and color rendering are very good
  • Le piqué est bon à pleine ouverture , très bon à F2 Le rendu des peaux et des couleurs est très bon

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortion, flare, sunstars

  • Vignetting is strong at F1.4 and disappears at F4
  • Distortion is high
  • Chromatic aberrations and LoCA are low
  • Resistance to flare is very good
  • At T16 we have nice sunstars

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

  • Le vignettage est important à F1.4 et disparait seulement vers F4
  • La distorsion est forte
  • Les aberrations chromatiques et les AC longitudinales sont très faibles
  • La résistance au flare est très bonne
  • Des effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus vers T16

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are excellent wide open and even when you close down to T5.6 thanks to its 16 aperture blades
  • Bokeh balls are quite big thanks to the short 23cm min focusing distance
  • The background blur is very nice and soft
  • Color rendition is very good
  • Contrast is very good. 
  • Le Bokeh est très bon à pleine ouverture et meme en fermant à F5.6 grâce aux 16 lames de diaphragme
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont assez grands grâce à la distance min de mise au point assez courte : 23cm
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux 
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon 
  • Le contraste est très bon

3 Video

  • In video we get very nice results in term of color rendition, nokeh, background blur with nice saturated colors and very good contrast, and very good resistance to flare. Centre sharpness is excellent but the borders are weak
  • Focus breathing is important

  • Très bon résultats en vidéo avec de belles couleurs , un très bon contraste, un très beau bokeh et flou d’arrière plan, un très bonne résistance au flare. Pour le piqué c’est excellent au centre mais faibles les bords

The new Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN is drastically smaller and lighter than the previous Sigma 20mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art, but still much heavier and bigger than the Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical or TTArtisan 21mm F1.5 or Thypoch 21mm T1.5

The Sigma has the best ergonomics with a click/clickless aperture ring and some refinement like rear filter possibilities and MF lock for astrophotography

The Thypoch is the only one as a pure cine lens with geared rings and a focusing ring with a very long throw

Le nouveau Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN est beaucoup plus petit et lager que l’ancien Sigma 20mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art, mais il reste toujours beaucoup plus lourd et gros que le Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical ou TTArtisan 21mm F1.5 ou Thypoch 21mm T1.5

Le Sigma a la meilleure ergonomie avec une bague d’ouverture avec ou sans clics et quelques raffinements comme le verrou MF utile en astrophotographie

Le Thypoch est le seul purement ciné avec des bagues crantées et une course de 210° pour la mise au point

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

  • In term of background blur, the thypoch and the sigma are the best, the Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 has bit more busy background
  • Bokeh balls : all have very good. bokeh balls
  • In term of color rendition all have very good color rendition
  • En terme de flou d’arrière plan le Sony 20mm F1.8 G est le meilleur grâce notamment à sa très faible distance minimum de mise au point, le Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN étant second. Le Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 est un peu plus nerveux
  • Ronds de Bokeh : Tous sont très bons
  • Rendu des couleurs : Tous sont très bons

4.5 Distorsion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

  • The smaller the lens the biggest the distortion for those 20mm : so Voigtlander is the worst , the old Sigma DG HSM is the best , the new Sigma is second
  • Vignetting : the 2 Sigma F1.4 are among the best
  • CA/flare/Sunstars : The Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary is the worst one , the others are quite good and the Sigma 20mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art is the best one

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

  • Plus l’optique est compact plus la distorsion est importante pour ces 20mm. Donc le Voigtlander est le pire, l’ancien Sigma est le meilleur , le nouveau étant deuxième
  • Vignettage : les 2 sigma F1.4 sont parmi les meilleurs
  • AC / flare / effets d’étoiles : Le Sigma 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary est le moins bon, les autres donnent de bonnes performances et le Sigma 20mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art est le meilleur

4.7 Conclusion

  • Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical (1400 euros) is globally the best and the sharpest on the entire field
  • The Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN (966 euros) is a bigger and more classical lens with AF with very good performances but only good corners
  • The Thypoch (967 euros) is very good globally except for the poor corner sharpness and the distortion
  • Le TTArtisan 21mm F1.5 (251 euros) is average with some vintage rendering

  • Le Voigtländer 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical (1400 euros) lest globalement le meilleur avec un excellent piqué sur tout le champ
  • Le Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG DN (966 euros) est une optique plus classique avec AF et très bon globalement mais avec des coins seulement bons
  • Le Thypoch est très bon globalement mais ses coins et sa distorsion sont ses point faibles
  • Le TTArtisan 21mm F1.5 (251 euro) est très moyen avec un rendu vintage. On en a pour son argent

6 Conclusion (English)

The Thypoch Simera 21mm T1.5 (967 euros) Cine is a very well built, medium weight & compact cine lens with nice ergonomics. Performance are overall very good : sharpness in the centre, big bokeh balls, soft background blur, very good color rendering and very good resistance to flare

The key weak points are the poor border sharpness, strong distortion and vignetting
