The Laowa Argus 35mm F0.95 build quality is excellent. it is rock solid and quite heavy but that’s normal for a F.095 lens with a lot of glass

The focusing ring is turning by 270° from 50cm to infinity (and 90° between 2m and infinity) : this is good for precision when you need to focus precisely at F0.95 but does not allow to go from far to near in one turn of the hand which is inconvenient for video work.

The Aperture ring , thanks to a switch is either with click or clickless which is ideal for video work less for photographic works. The switch is however badly positioned to my test as parallel to the aperture ring and very close to it : Several times I did action the switch whereas I was willing to turn the aperture ring

The Min focusing distance is quite long for a 35mm at 50cm , going to 35cm will have make the lens bigger and more expensive so this is a tradeoff you need to know

Both aperture ring and focusing ring turn smoothly and easily with a some dampening

The lens is delivered with a lens hood that I feel is a bit too short to protect well and a little bit too shiny and reflective. The lens cap is a standard one

If you need to use a standard filter just remove the lens hood and use a 72mm filter. This will be particularly useful for video work at F0.95 when using a ND will be almost mandatory to keep a 1/50s shutter speed

La qualité de construction du Laowa Argus 35mm F0.95 est excellente. Il est assez lourd et imposant mais c’est normal pour une telle focale et une telle ouverture record qui nécessite beaucoup de lentilles et de métal.

La bague de mise au point tourne sur 270° pour passer de 50cm à l’infini, c’est bien pour la précision de mise au point à F0.95 mais cela rend impossible le passage rapide d’un sujet proche à un sujet lointain ce qui est particulièrement embêtant en vidéo

La bague d’ouverture peut être avec ou sans clics grâce à un commutateur qui est malheureusement placé très près et parallèle à la bague d’ouverture : plusieurs fois je l’ai actionné pensant manipuler la bague d’ouverture elle même

La distance min de mise au point est très longue : 50cm au lieu des traditionnels 35cm , c’est un compromis pour minimiser le poids et le prix

Les deux bagues tournent avec un bel amorti

L’optique est livré avec un pare soleil que je trouve un peu trop petit et trop brillant pour bien faire son travail. Le capuchon d’objectif est tout à fait standard

Pour utiliser un filtre standard il suffit d’enlever le pare soleil pour mettre un filtre 72mm . Cela sera particulièrement utile pour de la video à F0.95 en extérieur, où l’utilisation d’un filtre ND sera nécessaire pour garder une vitesse de 1/50s

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV with its 61Mpix

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix

• In the centre results are a already good wide open, very good as of F1.2 and sharpness is reaching excellent levels as of F1.4
• Corners are lagging behind and you need to close down to F2.8 to start having good results
• At F5.6 , results are excellents on the entire field
• Globally results are perfectly usable right from F0.95 with very few glow effect (that you normally have at F0.95 – an excellent performance). You will gain to close a little bit as of F1.2 to already have a boost in contrast and sharpness
• Au centre les résultats sont déjà bons à pleine ouverture , très bon dès F1.2 et le piqué atteint un niveau excellent à F1.4
• Les coins sont à la traine et il faut fermer vers F2.8 pour avoir de bon résultats
• A F5.6 les résultats sont excellents sur tout le champ
• Globalement les résultats sont déjà tout à fait utilisable dès F0.95 avec très peu de halo ce qui est une performance pour un F0.95, on gagnera à fermer à F1.2 pour avoir une amélioration du piqué et du contraste

Corners / Coin

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

• The lens offers good sharpness for portraits at F0.95 with a very thin depth of field and smooth background blur
• Contrast is good wide open with is rare on such fast lens with aperture < F1
• Skin rendering is excellent
• Closing down to F1.2 allows to get very good rendering and excellent à F1.4
• L’optique présente un bon niveau de piqué à pleine ouverture F0.95 avec une très faible profondeur de champ et un très beau flou d’arrière plan
• Le contraste est bon à pleine ouverture ce qui est rare sur des optiques avec un ouverture F<1
• Le rendu des peaux est excellent
• En fermant à F1.2 le piqué devient très bon et excellent à F1.4
• Le piqué semble meilleure à courte distance (<2m)

For Architecture / Landscape : results will be a bit weak in the corners at f0.95 , you better close to F5.6 to have excellent sharpness on the entire frame

Pour de l’architecture ou du paysage, les coins seront faibles à F0.95 et il vaudra mieux fermer à F5.6 pour avoir un piqué excellent sur tout le champ

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortion, flare

• Vignetting is present at F0.95 and quite strong , it becomes very small at f5.6
• Distortion is small (pincushion) 
• Chromatic aberrations are visible wide open and become very big when facing the sun
• Resistance to flare is below average which is classical for this kind of lens . At F0.95 you also get typical circular halo effects
• Sunstars are weak as the 15 blades would results in 30 branches for the sunstars

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

• Le vignettage est très présent à F0.95 et devient minime vers F5.6
• La distorsion est faible en coussinet
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont visibles à pleine ouverture
• La résistance au flare est faible à pleine ouverture avec des effets de halo circulaires et moyenne pour les autres ouvertures
• Les effets d’étoiles sont faibles : avec 15 lames de diaphragme on a des étoiles à 30 branches !

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are very good wide open and at all apertures thanks to the 15 blades : well circular , soft , no fringing
• The background blur is very good : very soft in for a 35mm , it becomes busier for subject at long distance and softer for close distance
• Color rendition is excellent, very natural and balanced

• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons à pleine ouverture : bien circulaires à toutes les ouvertures grâce aux 15 lames de diaphragme : pas de franges colorées sur les bords
• Le flou d’arrière plan est plaisant et très doux pour un 35mm, il devient un peu plus nerveux pour lkes sujets à longue distance et plus doux pour les sujets à courte distance
• Le rendu des couleurs est excellent , très naturel et équilibré

3 Video

• Excellent results in video in term of sharpness, bokeh, background blur smoothness, color rendition
• The clickless aperture ring and focusing ring is a pleasure to use, but the 270° required from near to infinity is a little big long and can’t be actioned in one go
• Excellent rendering for portraits, very nice 3D effects
• Focus breathing is visible
• Excellents résultats en vidéo point de vue piqué, douceur du flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs
• La bague d’ouverture sans clics et celle de mise au point sont un vrai plaisir à manipuler, mais les 270°nécessaires pour passer de l’infini à 50cm sont un peu long et impossible à effectuer en un seul tour de main
• Excellent rendu en portraits, très beau rendu 3D
• le focus breathing est visible

4 Comparison with others fast 35mm / Comparison avec d’autres 35mm ultra lumineux

The Laowa 35mm F0.95 is the only full frame 35mm existing , so there is no real competitor for a F0.95, however there are 3 others 35mm F1.2 that we can compare with

Specifications

From a specification perspective the Laowa Argus 35mm F0.95 is quite heavy : 2 times the Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE but for 1 stop more, the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art is the biggest and heaviest one but also the only one with AF

The Laowa is the best in term of aperture (the only F0.95 !) and in term of number of aperture blades (15). Price is in the average for a super fast lens

D’un points de vue spécifications le Laowa Argus 35mm F0.95 est assez lourd, 2 x plus que le Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE mais il offre un diaphragme dem mieux , il reste plus léger que le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art qui est le plus gros et le plus lourd mais aussi le seul à proposer l’autofocus.

Le Laowa est le meilleur en terme d’ouverture (F0.95) et en terme du nombre de lames de diaphragme (15). Le prix est dans la moyenne de la catégorie

Sharpness / Piqué

The champion in term of sharpness stays the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art , but the Laowa is not far behindd in term of centre sharpness and much better than the Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE at F1.2 and F2. The Sigma is also the only one with very good to excellent corners at fast aperture , the Laowa is a good performer in term of corners when closed down and will provide excellent sharpness on the entire frame at F5.6 (the Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE and the Kerlee 35mm F1.2 will not )

Le champion de la catégorie reste le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art, mais le Laowa n’est pas très loin pour le piqué au centre et est nettement meilleur que le Voigtländer 35mm F1.2 Nokton SE à F1.2 et F2. Le Sigma est aussi le seul à offrir de très bons à excellents coins dès la pleine ouverture. Pour le Laowa il faudra fermer à F5.6. pour les autres c’est pire on n’atteint jamais un très bon niveau.

Bokeh and Color rendering / Bokeh et rendu des couleurs

Globally the Laowa and Sigma are the best in this category with the Laowa providing softest and highest level of background blur. The Sigma having a better color rendition in all circumstances thanks to its better resistance to flare

The Voigtlander is last in this category as you don’t have fully rounded bokeh balls as of F1.4

• #1 Laowa but average size bokeh balls due to min focusing distance of 50cm
• #2 Sigma but bigger bokeh Baals think to shorter min focusing distance of 30 cm
• #3 Kerlee
• #4 Voigtlander

Globalement , Le Laowa et le Sigma sont les meilleurs , le Laowa produisant le plus de flou d’arrière plan et le plus doux. Le Sigma a une colorimétrie légèrement meilleure grâce a sa moindre sensibilité au flare.

Le Voigltänder est le dernier de sa catégorie avec des ronds de Bokeh qui ne sont plus tout à fait ronds dès F1.4

• #1 Laowa : mais Ronds de Bokeh de taille moyenne à cause de la longue distance de mise au point min (50cm)
• #2 Sigma : mais avec des Ronds de Bokeh plus grands grâce à la plus courte distance de mise au point min (30cm)

Globally the Laowa and the Sigma are the best in class and far above the others. The Kerlee is to be avoided as having a poor sharpness wide open that required to be closed down to F2.8 to get very good results

The Laowa give that extra background blur softness thanks to its F0.95 aperture but bokeh is less consistent on the entire field at long distance than the Sigma. The Laowa give already good sharpness on the A7RIV wide open but is manual and sensitive to flare and CA. The Sigma is a workhorse that will provide excellent sharpness , excellent bokeh and background blur and a very efficient AF in all situations

The Voigtländer will be for the one looking for the smallest form factor

Globalement le Laowa et le Sigma survolent les concurrents. Le KErlee est à éviter vu le mauvais piqué à pleine ouverture : il faut fermer à F2.8 pour avoir de très bon résultats.

Le Laowa ajoute une touche de magie et de poésie avec une plus grande quantité de flou d’arrière plan que le Sigma. Mais le Sigma à un flou d’arrière plan plus consistant sur tout le champ. Le Laowa donne déjà un bon piqué à pleine ouverture sur A7RIV mais il est manuel et plus sensible au flare et aux AC. Le Sigma est plutôt une bête de travail ultra polyvalente dans toutes les situations : Il sera à l’aise aussi bien en portraits, sports, marriage avec un excellent piqué dès la pleine ouverture un AF très performant et un excellent bokeh et flou d’arrière plan

Le Voigtlander lui sera un très bon compromis si vous recherchez avant tout la portabilité et la discrétion

5 Sample of Photos / Exemples de Photos

The Laowa 35mm F0.95 will be excellent for portraits and objects details, with a beautiful rendering for skins. It also has a good sharpness wide open and creamy background blur; at F1.4 the lens is tack sharp.

It will be also ideal for street photography when you want to isolate your subject and have the rest of the street in the blur.

Le Laowa 35mm f0.95 sera excellent pour du portrait ou des détails d’objects, avec un très beau rendu des peaux, un bon piqué à pleine ouverture et un flou d’arrière plan très crémeux. A F1.4 on atteint l’excellence en terme de piqué

Il sera aussi idéal pour de la photo de rue car on peut isoler complètement un sujet de son environnement et avoir un bel effet 3D
