1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

• Weight : 378g (356g without lens hood)
• Price : 1100 euros
• Length : 66-73mm
• Filter : 49mm
• 12 blades aperture
• Minimal focusing distance : 35cm
• Aperture ring click or click less
• Manual lens
• Exif transmitted to the body
• Screwing circular lens hood

The build quality is top notch : The lens is fully metallic, focus and aperture ring are very well adjusted, engraving is in the metal. The only minus is that there is no mention of dust and moisture resistance

The size is very small around and similar to the Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar or the Sony FE 35mm F1.8

The lens is fully compatible with the 5 axis stabilisation as EXIF and distance information are transmitted in real time to the body

Focusing :

• Thanks to the focus peaking of Sony camera it is very easy to have a very precise focusing
• The focus ring is a pleasure to use , very large, with inner curves for easy grip with your fingers, with adequate level of dampening

Aperture ring 

• The aperture ring can be either click less or with click ; there is a special small ring that rotate by 180° : with the yellow bar at the top it become click less with the white dot it is with click

Lens Hood

There is a screwing lens hood. The lens is provided with 2 lens cap , one to be used on the lens without hood and one that can be fixed on the lens hood

La qualité des construction est excellente : tout en métal avec les bagues de mises au point et d’ouverture parfaitement ajustées, une gravure des indications dans le métal. Le seul point d’amélioration est le manque de protection contre les intempéries et les poussières

L’optique a plus ou moins la même taille que le Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar ou le Sony FE 35mm F1.8

L’objectif est compatible avec la stabilisation sur 5 axes grâce à la transmission des EXIFs en temps réel y compris la distance de mise au point

Mise au point

• Grâce au focus peaking et au zoom d’aide à la mise au point , on atteint une excellente précision
• La bague de mise au point est un plaisir à utiliser, très large , avec des renflements concaves pour faciliter la préhension avec les doigts, avec juste ce qu’il faut de résistance pour une mise au point précise

Bague d’ouverture

• Celle ci peut être avec ou sans clics . On passe de l’un à l’autre en tournant une très fine bague à l’avant de l’objectif. Avec le trait jaune on est sans clics avec le point blanc on est avec clics

Pare soleil

• Il y a un pare soleil vissant rond fourni avec l’objectif et un capuchon spécifique.

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV, (61Mpix)

• The lens is showing an excellent sharpness wide open and outstanding as of F2.8 across the whole frame with an excellent contrast
• An excellent results but a little bit less stellar than the Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar which was outstanding from F2

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIV (61Mpix)

• Le piqué est excellent à pleine ouverture et superbe dès F2.8 et ce sur tout le champ, avec en plus un excellent contraste
• C’est un résultat excellent mais un peu moins bon que le Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar qui était superbe dès la pleine ouverture

• Excellent result in close up
• Excellent résultats en mise au point rapprochée

Portraits

• Excellent result for portraits : very sharp , excellent skin rendering : not too contrasty or hard , soft transition to the blur area
• Excellent résultats en portraits : très piqué , excellent rendu des tons chairs sans trop de contraste qui pourrait durci les traits , transition douce vers le flou d’arrière plan

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

• Distorsion is very low
• Vignetting is quite strong at F2 but disappear at F2.8
• Chromatic aberrations are close to zero
• Resistance to flare is very good for a 35mm but not excellent you can easily get some halos
• You get some nice sunstars at F11 and F13 but not at F16 due to the design of the aperture blades
• Lightroom lens profile does correct distortion and vignetting automatically

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

• La distorsion est très faible
• Le vignettage est visible à pleine ouverture, négligeable à F2.8
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont proches de zero
• La résistance au flare très bonne pour un 35mm mais pas excellente, on a des halos assez facilement
• On obtient de beaux effets d’étoiles en fermant à F11 et F13 mais pas a F16 du à la conception des lames du diaphragme
• Un profil Lightroom corrige automatiquement la distorsion et le vignettage

2.4 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are good wide open and F2.8 and F5.6 but exhibit a star shape at F4. You can also see some trace of onion rings
• The background blur is very nice and soft
• The color rendition and contrast is excellent
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons à pleine ouverture, à F2.8 et F5.6 mais présentent une forme en étoile à F4. On peut également retrouver des traces de tranches d’oignons dans la structure des ronds de Bokeh
• Le flou d’arrière plan est doux et agréable,
• Le rendu des couleurs et les contraste sont excellents

3 Video

• In video we get very nice results crispy images with beautiful color rendition and soft background blur and excellent contrast. The clickless aperture is a big plus for video
• En video on obtient de très bons résultats avec beaucoup de détails, un très beau rendu des couleur un flou d’arrière plan doux et un excellent contraste. La bague d’ouverture sans clics est un plus appréciable

4 Comparison with other 35mm/ Comparaison avec d’autres 35mm

This lens should normally be compared with the best 35mm F2 but not to the 35mm F1.4 lenses as it goal is to be more compact and light. I have however choose still to include the new Sony 35mm F1.4 GM in the comparison together with the

Specifications

• The three 35mm F2 have all the same size but the Samyang being in plastic is lighter than the Sigma and Voigtländer
• The Voigtländer is the only one with manual focus in this comparison and the most expensive of the 35mm F2
• Les trois 35mm f2 ont la même taille, mais le Samyang est le plus léger à cause de sa construction plastique
• Le Voigtländer est le seul avec une mise au point manuelle dans cette comparaison et le plus cher des 35mm f2

Sharpness / Piqué

The Voigtländer 35mm F2 come right in the top 3 together with the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM and the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art. It is the most compact lens for this level of image quality

Le Voigtländer 35mm F2 arrive directement dans le trio de tête à côté du Sony 35mm F1.4 GM et du Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art. C’est l’optique la plus compacte à ce niveau de qualité

Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

• In term of background blur and bokeh balls , the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM has the edge with its F1.4 aperture, among the F2 , my preference will go for the Samyang for the bokeh balls and the Voigtländer for the background blur
• In term of color rendition the Voigtländer is one of the best together with the Sony GM, the Sigma and Samyang are below
• En terme de flou d’arrière plan et de ronds de Bokeh le Sony GM est avantagé par son ouverture de F1.4. Parmi les F2 mon choix se porte sur le Samyang pour les ronds de Bokeh et sur le Voigtländer pour le flou d’arrière plan
• En terme de rendu des couleurs le Voigtländer et le Sony GM sont au dessus des Samyang et Sigma

• For Portraits the Voigtländer and the Sony GM are clearly ahead of the Samyang and the Sigma

Distortion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

• The Voigtländer and the Sony GM are the best ones in term of Distortion / level of CA and resistance to flare, the others are well below
• The Sony is the best one in term of vignetting

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• Le Voigtländer et le Sony GM sont les meilleurs d’un point de vue distorsion / niveau d’AC et résistance au flare
• Le Sony GM est le meilleur d’un point de vue vignettage

Conclusion

• In term of 35mm F2 , the Voigtländer is one league above the Samyang 35mm F1.8 and the Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary and 2 leagues above the Sony FE 35mm F1.8
• It is very close to the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM in term of performance while offering a different approach : No AF , smaller F2 aperture to give priority to size and weight but with as impact smaller bokeh balls and less background blur
• En terme de 35mm f2 , le Voigtländer est un niveau au dessus des Samyang 35mm F1.8 et Sigma 35mm F2 DG DN Contemporary and 2 niveaux au dessus du Sony FE 35mm F1.8
• Ses performances sont très proches du Sony 35mm F1.4 GM en terme de qualité d’image tout en offrant une approche différente : Mise au point manuelle, ouverture intermédiaire de f2 pour privilégier la légèreté et la compacité au détriment de la quantité de flou d’arrière plan et de la taille des ronds de bokeh

4 Samples of Photos / Exemples de Photos

Excellent sharpness , color rendition and contrast on all photos taken with this Voigtländer lens . The lens also produce soft background blur and excellent portrait rendering

Excellent piqué , rendu des couleur et contraste sur toutes les photos prises avec cette optique Voigtländer. L’optique produit également des flous d’arrière plan très doux et très beaux rendus des portraits

5 Conclusion

The Voigtländer 35mm F2 Apo Lanthar (1100 euros) is a new jewel in the Apo Lanthar series and will complement the

• Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar
• Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar
• Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro Apo Lanthar

It has the same signature with outstanding sharpness and contrast , superb mechanics and build construction , rich colors

It is the kind of lenses for photographers who want the best possible image quality in the smallest form factor while taking their time to shoot and having an organic feel with their lens

It is not a universal lens : not for action , not for “max bokeh”, but if you like manual lenses you won’t be disappointed

However compared to the other Apo Lanthar, you don’t get directly the same punch in your face when you look a the images produced. Why ? 2 main reasons : firstly, images are only “excellent” wide open whereas they are outstanding for the other Apo Lanthar. Secondly a lens with a focal length of 35mm and a F2 aperture will give you only medium size bokeh balls with a good amount of background blur but nothing that can be compared to a 50mm F2

I personally own the 3 other Apo Lanthar and having both the Sony 50mm F1.2 GM and the Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar , I don’t know if I can justify for myself both Sony 35mm F1.4 GM and the new Voigtländer 35mm F2 Apo Lanthar

Pros

• Excellent sharpness on the entire frame wide open and outstanding as of F2.8
• Excellent color rendition and contrast
• Reasonable price for the performance (1100 euros)
• Excellent build quality and ergonomics
• Easy to switch click/clikcless aperture ring
• Very tactile and easy to use focusing ring
• EXIF transmission and compatibility with 5 axis stabilisation which is rare for a manual lens
• A Lightroom lens profile (rare for manual lenses)
• Small and lightweight
• Very low distorsion 
• Zero CA
• Soft background blur
• Rounded bokeh balls at F2, F2.8, F5.6 but not at F4
• Low field curvature (flat field)

Average

• Limited Aperture of F2 which does not allow to get very good separation from the background for full/half body shoot like a F1.4
• Vignetting wide open
• Resistance to flare is very good for a 35mm but not excellent
• Sunstars not as good as the other Voigtländer lenses
• Some trace of onions rings

5 Conclusion

Le Voigtländer 35mm F2 Apo Lanthar (1100 euros) est un nouveau joyau dans la gamme Apo Lanthar de Voigtländer et vient compléter les

• Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar
• Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar
• Voigtländer 110mm F2.5 Macro Apo Lanthar

Il a la même signature avec un superbe piqué et contraste, une construction à toute épreuve, une ergonomie excellente, des couleurs riches et naturelles

C’est le genre d’optique pour les photographes qui recherchent la meilleure qualité d’image dans un format compact en prenant le temps de la prise de vue et avec une relation organique avec l’objectif

Ce n’est pas une optique universelle : pas de scène d’actions, pas de bokeh et flou d’arrière plan à outrance, mais si vous aimez les optiques manuelles vous ne serez pas déçu

Néanmoins comparé aux autres Apo Lanthar , on a pas tout à fait le même effet Waouh en regardant les images. Pourquoi ? 2 raisons principales : Les images ne sont que “excellentes” à pleine ouverture alors que les autres Apo Lanthar sont superbes dès la pleine ouverture. D’autre part, une focale de 35mm et une ouverture de F2 ne donnent pas de très grands ronds de bokeh ni autant de flou d’arrière plan qu’un 50mm F2

J’ai personnellement les 3 autres optiques Apo Lanthar et j’ai à la fois le Sony 50mm F1.2 GM et Voigtländer 50mm F2 Apo Lanthar, mais je ne sais si je peux justifier de posséder à la fois le Sony 35mm F1.4 GM et le nouveau Voigtländer 35mm F2 Apo

Une optique manuelle proches de la perfection : A recommander sans hésitation

Pour

• Un piqué excellent sur tout le champ à pleine ouverture et superbe dès F2.8
• Un excellent rendu des couleurs et contraste
• Un prix raisonnable au vu des performances (1100 euros)
• Compact et léger
• Une excellente qualité de construction et ergonomie
• Une bague de mise au point très “tactile” qui facilite la mise au point
• La transmission des EXIF et des informations de distance pour la stabilisation 5 axes (rare sur les optiques manuelles)
• Un profil de correction disponible en Lightroom
• Une permutation aisée entre la bague d’ouverture avec ou sans clics
• Une très faible distorsion
• Un flou d’arrière plan très doux
• Des aberrations chromatiques proche de zéro
• Une courbure de champ bien plate
• Des ronds de Bokeh bien circulaires à F2, F2.8 et F5.6 mais pas à F4

Moyen

• Une ouverture limité de F2 qui ne permet pas une très bonne séparation sujet arrière plan pour les portraits américain, ce que permet une ouverture à F1.4
• Vignettage à pleine ouverture
• Résistance au flare très bonne pour un 35mm mais pas excellente
• Quelques traces de tranches d’oignons sur les ronds de bokeh
• Des effets d’étoiles moins bons qu’avec les autres Voigtländer
