AF performance

  • AF is good, quite fast and efficient in burst , its accuracy is very good overall
  • In portraits in AFC , eye AF , at less than 1m , I had the impression of some miss focus due to delay in 10-20% of the case. So for critical shoot don’t hesitate to take 2 photos

Performances AF

  • L’AF est bon, précis , silencieux et assez rapide. Pas de problème en rafale
  • Pour du portraits en AFC , AF sur les yeux à moins d’ un mètre, j’ai eu quelques ratés 10-20% comme si il y avait un très léger retard à la mise au point. Donc pour les photos critiques n’hissez pas à doubler vos photos

The tests were mainly made on a Sony A7RV, with its 61 Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

  • In the centre : the sharpness is very good and become excellent as of F4
  • In the corners : sharpness is also very good and become excellent at F5.6
  • for a <200 euros lens an excellent performance

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

  • The sharpness is very good to excellent wide open and excellent as of F2.8 and skin rendering is very good. Attention however to some miss focuses sometimes (10-20%)
  • Le piqué est très bon à excellent dès F2.8 Le rendu des peaux est très bon. Attention toutefois aux imprécision d’AF dans 10-20% des cas)

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortion, flare, sunstars

  • Vignetting is strong at F2.8 and disappears at F11 only
  • Distortion is high 
  • Chromatic aberrations are low 
  • Resistance to flare is average
  • At F5.6 we can get some sunstars already but not well defined

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

  • Le vignettage est important à F2.8 et disparait seulement vers F11
  • La distorsion est elevé 
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
  • La résistance au flare est moyenne
  • Des effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus dès F5.6 mais pas bien définies

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are good at F2.8 but as soon as you close to F4 you see the 6 blades
  • The average min focusing distance does not allow for big bokeh balls
  • The background blur is relatively soft at F2 but can become busy in some situations
  • The color rendition is good
  • Contrast is good
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons à F2.8 mais dès qu’on ferme on voit un hexagone
  • La distance minimum de mise au point moyenne ne permet pas de grand ronds de bokeh
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est relativement doux et agréable, mais peut devenir assez nerveux dans certains cas
  • Le rendu des couleurs est bon

3 Video

Video results are good, with very good sharpness , good bokeh balls at F2.8, smooth background blur and a good color rendering. . AF works very well , resistance to flare is good, Vignetting is very important there is no aperture ring which is less handy for video. Its compactness and lightness allow its use on gimbal. Focus breathing is visible (moderate)

Les résultats sont bon en vidéo avec un très bon piqué, de beaux ronds de bokeh à F2.8, un flou d’arrière plan doux et un bon rendu des couleurs, un très bon AF. La resistance au flare est correcte. Toutefois le vignettage est fort présent et il n’ya pas de bague d’ouverture. Sa compacité et sa légèreté lui permette d’être utilisé sur une gimbal. Le focus breathing est moyen

4 Comparison with other 24-30mm/ Comparaison avec d’autres 24-30mm

There are a lot of manual APSC lenses with this focal length but only a few with AF

Il y a beaucoup d’optiques APSC pour cette focale mais seulement quelques unes avec AF

At 27mm there is also the Viltrox 27mm F1.2 (600 euros) which is excellent but in a completely other category

A 27mm , il y aussi le Viltrox 27mm F1.2 (600 euros) , mais qui joue dans une tout autre catégorie

The AstrHori, Ulanzi and 7 Artisans are very very close in term of form factor and specs and behaviour with both 6 elements in 5 groups . Is suspect there are maybe same lens and difference ear only due to sample variation

TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 is the lightest and most compact but its build quality and AF is less good than the 4 others although price is quite similar

The Ulanzi and 7 Artisans 27mm F2.8 are the cheapest and has one of the best AF , its size and weight are average vs the others

Le AstrHori, Ulanzi et 7 artisans sont très proches en terme de taille design et specifications et comportement. Ils ont tous les deux 6 elements en 5 groupes. On peut supposer que c’est la même optique avec des différences juste dues au variation d’un exemplaire à l’autre

Le TTArtisan 27mm f2.8 est le plus léger et le plus compact mais aussi celui avec l’Af le moins bon et la moins bonne qualité de construction alors que son prix est très similaire

Le Ulanzi et 7 artisans 27mm f2.8 sont les moins chers et ceux avec le meilleur AF, le poids et la taille sont dans la moyenne supérieure

Sharpness / Piqué

Lens comparison chart displaying sharpness ratings for various lenses at different aperture settings.

The TTArtisan is the least good one at F2.8 , but becomes better than the Sigma and 7 Artisan at F4. The Tamron 24mm F2.8 is a full frame lens quite compact that offer a superlative sharpness at a similar price. If manual lens is ok then the Meike 28mm F2.8 offer a little bit better sharpness for only 80 euros

The Ulanzi and AstrHori are the best ones followed by 7 artisans and TTArtisan

Globally for APSC lens the AstrHori/Ulanzi/7Artisans/Sigma are usable with very good sharpness right from F2.8 whereas the TTArtisan require to be closed down to F4

Le TTArtisan est le moins bon à F2.8 , mais devient meilleur que le Sigma et le 7 Artisans à F4. Le Tamron 24mm F2.8 , optique plein format assez compacter offre un piqué superlatif à un prix similaire. Si une optique manuelle est ok alors le Meike 28mm F2.8 offre un piqué légèrement supérieur pour 80 euros seulement

Le Ulanzi et le AstrHori sont les meilleurs suivi par les 7 Artisans et TTArtisan

Globalement en optique APSC les Sigma et Ulanzi/ 7 artisans / AstrHori sont utilisables avec de très bon résultats dès F2.8 alors que le TTArtisan nécessite d’être fermé à F4

Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • In term of background blur, the Tamron with is macro capabilities is able to provide big bokeh balls and soft background blur although it has the widest field of view
  • Between the AstrHori/7 Artisans/Ulanzi and the TTArtisan, the AstrHori/7 Artisans/Ulanzi are a bit better thanks to their shorter min focusing distance
  • The texture of the bokeh balls of the Sigma is maybe the more distracting one
  • The color rendition is good on all of them
  • Le Tamron grâce à ses fonctionalités macro fournit le flou d’arrière plan le plus doux et les plus gros ronds de bokeh
  • Entre le AstrHori / Ulanzi / 7 artisans et le TTArtisan, le AstrHori /7 Artisans / Ulanzi sont un peu meilleur grâce à leur distance min de mise au point un peu plus courte
  • La texture des ronds de bokeh est un peu moins agréable sur le Sigma
  • En terme de rendu des couleurs ils sont tous bons

  • All lenses have significant distortion

Conclusion

  • Globally the AstrHori 7 Artisans 27mm F2.8 and Ulanzi are more enjoyable to use than the TTArtisan thanks to their better AF and better sharpness at f2.8 and very good consistency across all the frame.
  • The Tamron 24mm F2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 (F051) at 199 euros , full frame is a bargain if 24mm is ok for you
  • Globalement le AstrHori / 7 Artisans 27mm F2.8 et le Ulanzi sont plus agréable à utiliser que le TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 avec leur meilleur AF et meilleur piqué à pleine ouverture et leur consistance sur tout le champ,
  • Le Tamron 24mm F2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 (F051) à 200 euros , plein format est une excellente optique si 24mm est bon pour vous

6 Conclusion (English)

The AstrHori 27mm F2.8 (126$ – 199 euros) is a very good compact little lens with very good performance overall in term of sharpness, AF, compactness, color rendering. Its weak points are the vignetting and distortion and sometimes little AF hesitation in portrait. Resistance to flare is average and could be improved but for 126 $ is a very nice performance

Compared to the TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 AF (133$) , the AstrHori is more enjoyable to use thanks to its better sharpness wide open and more efficient AF

The lens is very similar to the Ulanzi 27mm F2.8 (140$) and 7 Artisans 27mm F2.8 AF (129$) with the 7 Artisans being a little bit less sharp when closing down the aperture (not reaching excellence)

6 Conclusion (Français)

Le AstrHori 27mm F2.8 (126$ – 199 euros) est une très bonne petite optique avec de très bonnes performances globalement en terme de piqué, d’AF et de compacité et de rendu des couleurs. Ses points faibles principaux sont le vignettage ,la distorsion et quelques hésitation de temps en temps pour l’AF en portrait. La résistance au flare est pourrait être meilleure mais pour 140$ avec AF c’est tout à fait correct

Alternative

Comparé au TTArtisan 27mm F2.8 AF (133$) , le AstrHori es est plus agréable à utiliser grâce à son meilleur piqué à pleine ouverture, sa consistance sur tout le champ

L’optique est très similaire au Ulanzi 27mm F2.8 (140$) et au 7 Artisans 27mm F2.8 AF (129$) mais le 7 Artisans est légèrement moins piqué quand on ferme l’ouverture (très bon et non excellent)
