The Sony 300mm F2.8 can produce very beautiful results if you use a monopod or a tripod to get the best out of it. The focus breathing is visible

6 Conclusion (English)

If you are a sports, wildlife or fashion photographer, the Sony 300mm F2.8 GM OSS (6700 euros) is your dream lens.

• For Sports photographers the A9III and its 120fps will allow you to get the right shoot for indoor sports or in a stadium with exceptional AF tracking and low light capabilities
• For Wildlife photographers , they will benefit from the 61Mpix of the A7RIV / A7RV for further cropping
• For Fashion it will allow to completely blur out the background and have very nice 3D effects

With the TC1.4 performance stays excellent , whereas for TC2.0 it become more difficult to us with only very good results wide open and ISO climbing fast if you close to F8 and keep a high shutter speed

Sharpness on A7RIV (61Mpix)

Pros

• Excellent to Outstanding sharpness on A7RIV
• Excellent AF, compatible with the 120fps of the A9III
• Very light and compact, fit in a normal bag
• Excellent Build quality
• All weather resistant
• Performances with TC 1.4
• Excellent smooth blurry background  and 3D effect
• Excellent Bokeh Balls
• Excellent color rendering
• Efficient optical stabilisation
• Excellent Ergonomics
  • Very well balanced
  • Very good usability : all classical buttons
  • Function Ring
  • Drop in CPL filter possible
• Distortion almost nill
• Low Vignetting
• Low CA
• Standard lens hood easy to use (not like the 400mm and 600mm that requires a screw to be turned)

Average

• Performances with TC2.0 in term of sharpness
• No clics for tripod collar every 90°
• No Arca Swiss foot
• Price
• Good resistance to flare but not excellent

Cons

• None

Points of attention

• You better have a monopode always with you to get best result
• 600mm require high shutter speed and High ISO
• TC provide excellent result on static subject on a strong tripod  but in real life they will require high ISO and high shutter speed
• Correct framing with TC require practice as it is difficult to keep subject in the frame at 420mm or 600mm

6 Conclusion (French)

Si vous pratiquez la photo sportive ou animalière ou de mode de manière professionnelle, le Sony 300mm F2.8 GM OSS (6.700 euros) est l’objectif de vos rêves

• Pour la photo sportive, couplé avec le A9III on pourra utiliser les 120i/s avec un AF sans faille et de très bonnes performances en basse lumière
• Pour la photo animalière , on pourra bénéficier des 61Mpix du A7RIV pour des crops massif
• Pour la photo de mode on pourra noyer l’arrière plan dans un flou très doux et avoir de très beaux effets 3D

Avec le TC1.4 les performances restent excellentes, alors que avec le TC2.0 cela devient plus difficile ave cruellement des résultats très bons à pleine ouverture et des ISO qui grimpent rapidement si on ferme à F8 ou F11 et qu’on conserve une vitesse d’obturation élevé.

  • Ergonomic au top : tous les boutons classiques sont là

• Distorsion quasi nulle

• Pare soleil standard facile à utiliser (les 400 et 600mm avaient un pare soleil a fixer avec une vis)

• Piqué avec le TC2.0
• Pas de clics sur le cooler de trépied tous les 90°
• Pas de pied Arca Swiss
• Prix
• Bonne résistance au flare mais pas excellente

Contre

• Aucun

Points d’attention

• L’usage du monopole est un gros plus pour avoir les meilleurs résultats
• La focale de 600mm requiert une vitesse élevée et des hauts ISO dans la majorité des cas
• Les TC donnent d’excellent résultats sur trépied dans des conditions idéales (statique , pas de vent) mais en pratique requièrent une énorme montée en ISO et une vitesse d’obturation élevé
• La cadrage requiert pas mal d’expérience car on peut très vite perdre son sujet à 600mm et avec une focale fixe il n’y a pas de possibilité de faire un zoom arrière pour faciliter le recadrage
