2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII,with its 42 Mpix

Performances are really impressive the lens is nearly very good to excellent from centre to corners at all focal lengths

At the extreme of the range 200-600mm closing down the aperture by 1 stop increase a little bit the centre sharpness which is already very good to nearly excellent

L’objectif est très bon à excellent sur toutes les focales et ce du centre aux coins à toutes les focales

Aux extrêmes à 200 et 600mm , fermer l’ouverture d’un cran augmente très légèrement le piqué qui est déjà proche de l’excellence

2.2 Vignetting /  Distorsion / Chromatic aberrations / Flare / Sunstars

• Vignetting is small wide open
• There is some pincushion distorsion
• No chromatic aberrations
• Ressitance to flare is very good
• Nice sunstars effects at F16 and more

Lightroom lens profile is correcting distorsion and lens fall off  automatically

2.2 Vignettage / Distorsion /  Aberrations chromatiques / Flare / Effets d’étoiles

• Il y a un léger vignettage à pleine ouverture  mais très faible
• Il y a une distorsion en coussinet
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Très bonne résistance au flare
• Beaux effets d’étoiles à F16 et plus

Lightroom corrige le vignettage et la distorsion automatiquement

2.3 Bokeh & Color rendition / Bokeh et rendu des couleurs

• Background blur is very soft and pleasant : I was not expecting that from this telephoto zoom with such a small aperture of F5.6-6.3
• The compression effect and amount of blur increase a lot from 200 to 600mm (see samples photos) , At 600mm you think you shoot with a 135 F1.8 !
• Bokeh balls are very good in general well rounded and soft even with this small F5.6-6.3. The shape of bokeh balls in the corners is less good at F8 with some strange shape
• You can notice some purple fringing for the borders of the bokeh balls for the ones at the borders (not in the bokeh balls in the centre of the image)
• The color rendition is very good
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux et plaisant : je n’attendais pas cela d’un zoom avec une si petite ouverture de F5.6-6.3
• L’effet de compression et la quantité de flou augmente fortement entre 200 et 600mm (voir photos),  à 600mm on à l’impression d’un 135mm F1.8
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons en général : bien ronds et doux même avec une ouverture de F5.6-6.3.  La forme des ronds de Bokeh est moins bonne près des bords à F8 avec des formes irrégulières
• On peut remarquer également des franges pourpres sur certains ronds de bokeh périphériques
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

2.4 Usage on the field / Utilisation pratique

Considering the focal length and the type of subject (sports, animals, birds…) you will shoot with this lens you will be often at 1/500s min , even at max aperture of F6.3 this mean ISO will quickly climb to 800 ISO is very good light and up to 25600 on a gray day

If you want to go to lower ISO the Sony 600mm F4 (14.000 Euros) can help…

A Zoom like 200-600 is also helping to compose your shoot as using a fixed 600mm prime lens can be somewhat difficult to frame your subject and track it

Monopod usage : considering the size and the difficulty to frame a subject at 600mm , if you are waiting for 10min or more for a bird, a monopod will be welcome. Note that the collar tripod on the Sony 200-600 is compatible with the 2 size of screws 1/4″ -20 and 3/8″-16

Au vu de la longueur focale et du type de sujets parfois rapide (sports , animaux, oiseaux…) on utilisera le plus souvent une vitesse d’au moins 1/500s , même à ouverture maximum de F6.3 cela signifie une forte montée en ISO avec du 800 ISO en plein soleil et même du 25600 ISO par temps gris ou à l’intérieur

Pour pouvoir utiliser des ISO plus raisonnable il vous faudra regarder au Sony 600mm f4 GM (14.000 euros…)

Un zoom comme le 200-600 aidera aussi à mieux composer et à suivre un sujet lointain , par rapport à un 600mm qui demande beaucoup plus d’expérience pour le cadrage et le suivi

Monopode : considérant la taille et le poids de cet objectif et la focale de 600mm qui requiert un cadrage de précision , un monopode pourra aider pour toute prise de vue dépassant les 10 minutes (ex terrain de sport ou affût d’oiseaux). A noter que le support de trépied est compatible avec les 2 tailles de vis standard 1/4″ 20 et 3/8″ – 16

2.5 AF Performance & TCs / Performance autofocus et TCs

• Paired with the A7RIII , AF performance is very good
• Paired with A9 and its real time tracking 9,  AF performance is excellent

Although AF is very good/excellent it is not as fast as e.g the Sony 400mm F2.8 GM that has dual linear motor , particularly adequate for very fast moving subjects. We have here a G lens and not GM so we can’t expect the have the top notch AF system for this price point

Note that Phase Detect autofocus (PDAF) works up to F8 on on the A7RIII, and F11 on the A7III and F16 on A9

The A9 with its latest firmware has been also tuned specially for the Sony 200-600 as it can shoot all the way up to F32 at 200mm and F36 at 600mm (in AFC Real time tracking mode)

This means that usage of TC1.4 at F9 or a TC2.0 at F13 won’t be possible on A7RIII but both will be perfectly usable on A9 and TC1.4 will be usable on A7III

If you have the A7RIII or A7RIV let’s not forget the use the APSC crop mode giving respectively 16 or 28 Mpix which makes a very handy TC1.5 , free , fast to apply and without light loss 

Another possibility to increase the zoom range is to use a A6400 with its excellent AF and its crop factor of 1.5 giving you a very fast and efficient 300-900mm

• Avec le A7RIII , le performance AF est très bonne
• Avec le A9 : le performance AF est excellente

Bien que la vitesse d’AF soit très bonne , on est pas aussi rapide que le Sony 400mm F2.8 GM qui dispose lui de double moteurs linéaires particulièrement approprié pour les sujets se déplaçants très rapidement. Après tout on a un objectif G et non GM et donc pas le nec plus ultra en terme d’AF

Il faut noter que l’Af a detection de phase (PDAF) fonctionne  jusque F8 sur A7RIII, F11 sur A7III et même F16 pour le A9

Ce dernier a même été optimisé lors de la dernière mise à jour V5 pour fonctionner en mode AFC tracking real time jusque F32 à 200mm et F36 (600mm) avec le Sony 200-600

Cela signifie que l’usage d’un TC1.4 à F9 et TC2.0 à F13 ne sera pas recommandé sur A7RIII mais tout a fait fonctionnelle sur A9. Le TC1.4 pouvant lui être encore utilisé sur A7III

Il ne faut pas non plus négliger l’utilisation du mode crops APSC sur les A7RIII (16mpix) et A7RIV  (28Mpix) qui donne un TC1.5 pas cher, rapide et sans perte de luminosité!

Une autre possibilité pour étendre la plage du zoom est d’utiliser un Sony A6400 avec son excellent AF et son crop factor de 1.5 , ce qui vous donnera un zoom de 300-900mm

2.7 Preliminary Conclusion

Both handling and image quality of the Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 are excellents

The AF is fast and efficient , sharpness is excellent, color rendition is very good, background blur is very soft and Bokeh balls are very good in most situations

A must have for sports and animals shooters

In next chapters we will see its behavior with TC1.4, TC2.0 , a comparison with the Sony FE 100-400mm GM and some video samples

2.7 Conclusion préliminaire

La maniabilité et la qualité d’image de ce Sony 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 sont excellentes

L’autofocus est rapide et efficace , le piqué excellent , le rendu des couleurs très bon, le flou d’arrière plan très doux et les ronds de bokeh très bons dans la plupart des cas

Un indispensable pour les animaliers et les sportifs

Dans les chapitres suivants nous verrons la performance avec le TC1.4 et le TC2.0, une comparaison avec le Sony FE 100-400mm GM et les performances en vidéo
