The TTArtisan 17mm F1.8 is a wide angle AF lens for APSC sensor. It is all in plastic with no buttons.

The lens is provided with a rear cap that is also a docking station with a usb c port for firmware upgrade

Le TTArtisan 17mm F1.8 est une optique grand angle avec Autofocus pour capteur APSC. L’optique es tout en plastique avec aucun bouton

L’optique est livrée avec un bouchon arrière qui fait aussi office de dock avec port USB C pour les mises à jour micrologicielles

1.2 AF performances

The AF performance seems good at first hand , but there are some AF hesitation, some slight mis focus (at 100% crop) . In burst is is relatively OK

Because of those AF little missfocus you don’t get the same sharpness as you would do in MF

Les performances AF semblent bonnes , mais il y a des hesitations et de légère imprécisions de mise au point (en crops 100%). En rafale c’est relativement ok

A cause des ces légère imprecisions , le piqué obtenu est moins bon que en mise au point manuelle

  • The Bokeh balls are nice wide open but they show hexagon as of F2.8
  • The background blur is nice wide open but become a little bit nervous when closed down
  • The color rendition is good

3 Video

Video results are good, with very good sharpness , background blur is smooth wide open but get sometimes a little bit busy when you close the aperture. Colors are good. The resistance to flare is low and get often halos and artifacts.

Les résultats sont bons en vidéo avec un très bon piqué, un flou d’arrière plan est doux à pleine ouverture mais devient un peu nerveux en fermant. Le rendu des couleurs est bon.La résistance au flare est basse et on obtient souvent des halos et artefact quand le soleil est dans le champ. On obtient de beaux effets d’étoiles

The TTArtisan 17mm f1.8 is the smallest and cheapest of the 4 lenses. The Sigma is above the others in term of build quality but is costing 3 times the price of the TTArtisan

Le Sigma 16mm F1.4 est bien au dessous des deux autres, c’est une des meilleures opiiques pour Les Sony APSC , le Yongnuo 16mm F1.8 est assez proche

Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • The TTArtisan F1.4 has maybe the best bokeh balls , followed by the Sigma
  • In term of background blur, the Sigma 16mm F1.4 and the Yongnuo have a little edge, but the 2 others a quite good
  • In term of color rendition the TTArtisan 17mm F1.8, the Yongnuo , the Sigma 16mm F1.4 and Samyang 16mm F2 are the best while the TTArtisan F1.4 being a bit more vintage look
  • Le TTArtisan a peut être les meilleurs ronds de bokeh, suivi du Sigma
  • En terme de flou d’arrière plan , le Sigma 16mm F1.4 et le Yongnuo ont un petit avantage sur les autres qui ont déjà un bon flou d’arrière plan

6 Conclusion (English)

The TTArtisan 17mm F1.8 AF (139 euros) is a nice budget wide angle lens for Sony APSC sensor. Performances are good for the price with to excellent sharpness in the centre at F4, good color rendition, nice bokeh wide open

The main issues are AF precision , resistance to flare, vignetting

The AF can certainly be improved by TTArtisan through firmware upgrade

The Yongnuo YN 16mm F1.8 DA DSM (184 euros) is a little bit more expensive but sharper wide open and with a more efficient AF

If you want the best overall 16/17mm then the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN (450 euros) is the best choice but cost 3 times the price of the TTArtisan

Le TTArtisan 17mm F1.8 (139 euros) est une bonne petite optique autofocus à petit budget grand angle pour Sony APSC. Les performances sont bonnes pour le prix avec un excellent piqué à F4, de beaux ronds de Bokeh et un flou d’arrière plan agréable.

Les principaux points faibles sont la precision de l’AF, la résistance au flare et le vignettage

L’AF peut certainement être amélioré avec des mises à jour firmware

Le Yongnuo YN 16mm F1.8 DA DSM (184 euros) est un peu plus cher mais a un meilleur piqué et AF

Si vous recherchez le meilleur 16-17mm pour APSC il faut se tourner vers le Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN (450 euros) qui est une excellente optique mais qui coûte 3 x le prix du TTArtisan !
