7 Conclusion

Very few lenses can fully exploit the full potential of the A7RV; only some of the most recent high end lens are fully capable of it. But the research of the “Outstanding” grade should not be a target as such and be aware of soon suffering from the GAS (Gear Acquisition syndrome) !

But at the same time if you intend to only use Good or Very good grade lenses it is useless to take a A7RV and you will be better with a A7IV

Taking aside some special lens like the Sony 400 F2.8 GM and Sony 600 F4 GM , Sony FE 300mm F2.8 GM, that very few will be able to afford the lenses that stands out from the crowd are the

4 Conclusion

Très peu d’objectifs arrivent à exploiter pleinement le plein potentiel du A7RV. Seul certaines des optiques haut de gamme les plus récentes y arrivent. Attention toutefois de ne pas se laisser uniquement guider par la quête de la note “exceptionnel” qui ne doit pas être une fin en soi. Vous risqueriez de souffrir du fameux GAS (Gear acquisition syndrome – syndrome d’acquisition du matériel).

Toutefois si vous comptez n’utilisez que des objectifs Bon à Très Bon sur A7RV alors il vaut mieux prendre un A7IV qui feront de meilleures photos avec ces optiques moins haut de gamme

Sans surprise ce sont les derniers GM que Sony , les dernières focales fixes Sigma spécialement conçues pour les hybrides et les superbes Voigtländer Apo Lanthar

Très bon mais pas idéal

Le Sony 85mm F1.4 GM montre des faiblesses à F1.4 (très bon) et n’atteint jamais la note “exceptionnel” (il plafonne à excellent) , cela combiné avec son AF, un des plus lent de la gamme GM , font qu’une mise à jour avec un GM mark II est nécessaire. Le meilleur 85mm est pour l’instant le Sigma 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art

En résumé

L’acquisition du A7RIV peut entrainer une revue complète de votre parc optique pour  pouvoir exploiter le capteur de 61Mpix. Si vous n’êtes pas prêt à investir dans des optiques haut de gamme et lourde , il vaut mieux rester sur un A7IV

    I use sony a7r2 , it’s tamron 35mm f2.8 can be outstanding for image like a7r4 ? I consider with Sony zeiss 35mn 2.8. Thanks.

      Tamron full be much better than the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8
      Also consider the Samyang 35 F1.8 even better for similar price

    When do you plan to review the newly announced (as of this morning) Sony FE 35mm F1.4 GM lens? This announcement was great news, especially since you called out a 35mm F1.4 GM as being one of the four lenses that Sony needs to renew/update most to support the A7RIV.

    Amazing resource – thanks for the work.

    I like small and light primes, and I also like the 28mm focal length. The Sony 28mm FE is certainly small and light, but it is indeed not razor sharp.

    I wonder if Tamron or Sigma will release a 28mm in their respective mirrorless ranges. I know the stellar Sigma 28 1.4 Art exists in FE mount but it is not exactly small and light 😉

    Hello Marc, thank you for the quality of this analysis and for your very interesting reviews. I saw that the samyang 45 1.8 downgraded from excellent to very good. What does justify this downgrade? Is it a reassesment or a change un your methodology?

      when it was initially tested on 42Mpix it was rated as excellent for it
      when retested on 61Mpix many lenses loose one grade as the sensor is more demanding

      the rating need to be adapted per sensor
      so take rating for 61 Mpix and if you have 42 do +1 and if you have a 24 + 2ratings : eg a very good on 61Mpix will be outstanding on 24Mpix => for a lens rated on 61Mpix a very good / excellent or outstanding you won’t really see the difference

        I see your point. Thanks a lot for your answer.

        I see you determine the sharpness at 100% magnification. On lightroom, does it makes any sense to go beyond 100%, for instance at 200% or 300%, to evaluate the sharpness of my pictures (i have an alpha 7 riv)? Or is it too far from reality and from the final print? There is always a moment when the image becomes softer and i don’t know if it is my technique or if it’s normal?

    Cela ne sert à rien pour judged de la qualité individuelle d’une photo mais pour comparer 2 photos pour un detail parfois oui

    Bonjour Marc,
    Super travail qui m’a bien aidé dans mes choix.
    J’ai un A7III et un A6600 avec 16-55/2.8
    Je fais souvent des photos de famille en basse lumière.
    Pour le A7III j’hésite un peu entre un 24-70/2.8 voir le 24-105/4 (ce qui ferait double emploi) et un objectif fixe comme le Sony 24/1.4
    Selon les situations, cette focale pourrait aussi me faire un 36/1.4 avec le 6600.
    Un avis sur ce sujet ?

      certainement pas le 24-105 qui fait doublon avec le 16-55
      je partirais plutôt sur une focale fixe pour clairement différencier avec les zoom

    Merci pour la réponse.
    Cela confirme ma première idée. Comme j’ai déjà le Sony 55/1.8, je vais prendre un 24mm 1.4
    A voir entre Sigma et Sony ce dernier ayant ma préférence et étant nettement plus léger.
    Et je verrai ce que cela donne avec le A6600, ce qui peut dépanner selon les situations.

    Bonjour M. Alhadeff
    Bravo pour votre travail, c’est exceptionnel!

    À l’analyse de vos conclusions, je m’aperçoit que l’achat de mon A7R4 n’était pas nécessairement une bonne idée…mais j’en doute encore. J’ai acheté à un moment ou le A73 m’apparaissait en fin de carrière et où l’arrivée du A74 était imprévisible (dans un an, 2 ans…). Je venais de vendre mon A72.

    J’ai actuellement un lot d’objectifs se classant entre très bons et excellents selon vos critères.

    Revendre mon boitier A7R4 avec l’intention d’en acheter un autre dans 1 an…ne me semble pas une démarche économique. J’ai quand même de bons objectifs dans mon lot actuel et je penses probablement en remplacer un ou 2.

    Vous pouvez probablement m’éclairer sur le point suivant:

    Quel est la différence sur le résultat (qualifié image post traitement) pour un même objectif (classé très bon par exemple) utilisé sur un boîtier de 42 Mp versus un 61Mp? Je comprends que l’objectif ne donnera pas le plein rendement du capteur de 61Mp (son plein potentiel) mais est-ce que le rendu final sera différent? Le traitement en plus haute résolution d’un même rendu optique ne devrait il pas donner le meilleur de l’objectif?

      le rendu final sera le meme si la photo de 61Mpix est reporté en 42Mpix
      en fait les 21Mpix supplémentaires ne seront pas bien exploités puisque l’objectif ne les supporte pas
      si on regarde la photo a 100% en 61Mpix et en 42Mpix on aura l’impression d’une moindre netteté sur 61Mpix

      ce n’est important que pour les grands tirages ou les crop massif ou si l’on regarde tout le temps ses photos à 100% (ce qui équivaut à regarder un poster de 1,5m à moins de 50cm)

    Hey Marc,
    So very good and above for the new a7iv? If I mainly shoot f8-13 on my 16-35f4, will the difference be noticeable enough that the tamron 17-28 will be significantly better? Just wondering if it’s worth sacrificing the reach. I like the 16-35 range but don’t need the f2.8. Thanks!

      The 17-28 will be significantly better for borders and corners even on a7iv

    Hi Mark,

    I see in your review of the Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG HSM you say it beats the 50mm Zeiss at f1.4 and is sharper from center to corners, yet in your list here the Sony is 2 grades ahead of the Sigma? Is it that on 42mp A7RII the Sigma is better but on 61mp A7RIV the Sony is better?

      I have retested all the lenses on 61Mpix which is far more demanding. It may happen I had a particular good copy when testing on 42 but when I retested a few years later on 61 Mpix the results where quite different. Nowadays the Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN is much better than the HSM version

    Many thanks for the hard work. A quick thought is why 20mm F1.8 G is in the final list, as it is only rated by 4 stars. Also could you please advise if we can use it on A6XXX body, as none APSC lenses are rated outstanding for 20mm FL .

      hello , this is due to corners sharpness and less variability from one sample to another one , 1 had 3 Sony 20mm F1.8 lenses tested and there was inconsistency in corners sharpness . Yes it can be used on APSC
