With this lens Sony is adding a missing piece that will please to all animals/sports shooters. No need of using adapted Sigma 150-600 or Tamron lens, or use a TC1.4 on the Sony 100-400mm

Of course the lens is very big , the biggest zoom in e-mount but what surprised me directly is that there lens does not extend at all: it has a fixed length which is a huge plus in term of handling & carrying the lens compared to Sigma/Tamron alternatives. This also help to keep sand, dust not entering in a zooming barrel

The lens is part of the G series and not the GM , this helps to keep the cost contained at 2100 euros whereas the 100-400 GM is already at 2900 Euros

Overall the build quality is excellent , a little bit lower than the 100-400mm but the lens is dust and moisture resistant which is what is important

Due to its length (318mm) check you camera backpack , you may need to change it if you want to transport the lens mounted on a body

• Sac de rangement

Avec cette optique , Sony ajoute une optique majeure qui plaira à tous les sportifs et les animaliers. plus besoin d’utiliser un Sigma 150-600 avec adaptateur ou le Sony 100-400mm avec un TC1.4

Bien entendu l’optique est volumineuse, le plus grand des zoom en monture E, mais ce qui surprend directement c’est le fait que l’optique ne s’allonge pas et on a un ensemble très compact à longueur constante pour atteindre les 600mm , ce qui améliore très fortement l’équilibre et facilite le transport comparé aux alternatives Sigma/ Tamron. Cela aide aussi à protéger l’optique contre l’intrusion de sable, poussière ou pluie qui ne pénétreront pas par un fut coulissant

L’optique fait partie de la gamme G et non GM , ce qui permet de garder un coût “raisonnable” de 2100 euros par rapport au Sony 100-400 GM à 2900 euros

Globalement la qualité de construction est excellent même si légèrement en deçà du Sony 100-400 GM , l’important pour cette optique étant la protection tout temps qui est bien là

A cause de sa taille il vous faudra peut être changer de sac a dos photo si vous comptez transporter l’optique montée sur boitier

1.2 The Lens hood / Pare-soleil (reference ALC-SH-157)

• A thick rubber band at the end of the lens hood allow to put the lens vertically in a very stable manner and amortise any shocks

1.4 Zooming ring / Bague de zoom

• It is very easy to focus even with one finger , there is enough fluidity in the zooming ring without being loose at all
• It requires only a 70° rotation to zoom from 200mm to 600mm
• Compared to the 100-400 it requires much less effort and there is no change in balance when zooming thanks to the internal focusing
• Il est très facile de manipular la bague de zoom même avec un seul doigt, elle est bien fluide mais avec ce qu’il faut de résistance pour avoir de la précision
• Elle ne requière q’une rotation de 70° pour passer de 200 à 600mm
• Comparé au 100-400 le zoom est beaucoup plus facile et agréable et l’équilibre ne change pas grâce au zoom interne sans allongement du fût

1.5 Strap lugs / Ancoches pour sangle

• The lens being big and heavy you will use the strap lugs on the lens instead of the ones of the camera
• L’objectif étant lourd et encombrant , on attachera la sangle à l’objectif plutôt qu’au boitier dans les encoches prévues à cet effet

1.6 Size comparison with the other lenses / Comparaison de taille avec d’autres optiques équivalentes

Compared to the Sony FE 100-400mm (205mm) it is much more bigger and equivalent in size to the 100-400 extended to 400mm + TC1.4 

• Sony 200-600 : 318mm
• Sony 100-400 : 205mm ,but 285mm at 400mm and 301mm length with TC1.4 @560mm focal length

Comparé au Sony FE  100-400mm (205mm) , il est beaucoup plus gros et équivalent en taille au 100-400 allongé à 400mm + le TC.14

• Sony 200-600 : 318mm
• Sony 100-400 : 205 mm , 285mm. de longueur @400mm de focale et 301mm de longueur à 560mm de focale avec le TC1.4

Compared to Sigma 150-600mm and Tamron 150-600mm than can be adapted to Sony thanks to a Sigma MC11 adapter

• Sigma 150-600mm F5-6.3 Sport  is 290-480mm without adaptor (26mm) and weighs 2860g, 1600 euros, It has a non removable tripod collar
• Tamron 150-600mm F5-6.3 is 260mm-348mm without adaptor  (26mm), weighs 1951g, 1100 euros

Both are (much) less expensive, but the internal zooming of the Sony 200-600 is unique and helps dramatically in term of usability, not speaking about the blazing fast AF than adapted lens can not compete with

Minimum focusing distance is around 2.5m on the 3 of them, whereas it is >1m on the 100-400mm

Comparé au Sigma 150-600mm et au Tamron 150-600mm qui peuvent être adapté pour Sony grâce à la bague Sigma MC11

• Le Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 Sports mesure de 290-480mm sans adaptateur (+26mm) et pèse prés de 2860g, 1600 Euros, Il a un collier de trépied non amovible
• Le Tamron 150-600mm F5-6.3 mesure de 260 à 348mm sans adaptateur (+26mm) et pèse 1951g, 1100 euros

Les deux sont (nettement) moins cher , mais le fait d’avoir un zoom interne sur le Sony 200-600 change vraiment la vie au quotidien sur ce genre d’objectif, sans parler de la vitesse d’autofocus excellente sur le Sony et au mieux bonne sur les optiques utilisées avec adaptateur

La distance minimum de mise au point est aux alentours de 2,5m sur les trois , à comparer à moins de 1m sur le Sony FE 100-400mm
