1.3 AF performance

  • AF is relatively fast (but not as fast a a Sony), accurate and silent. In burst mode it works well
  • Eye AF / Tracking is working very well 

Performances AF

  • L’AF est relativement rapide (pas autant qu’un Sony), précis , et silencieux. Pour de la rafale sur sujets en mouvements cel fonctionne plutôt bien
  • L’AF sur les yeux fonctionne très bien

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

Table showing image sharpness ratings for different aperture settings (F-stops) in the center and corners.

The tests were made on a Sony A6000 with its 24 Mpix

In the centre results are good wide-open and become excellent as of F2.8. The corners unfortunately are one grade lower and become very good at F2.8 and excellent at f5.6

  • Vignetting : very present wide open, negligible at F2.8
  • Chromatic aberrations are very slow
  • LoCA are present but moderate
  • Distortion is very low
  • Resistance to flare is ok but not great
  • You get some sunstars when closed at F16

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

  • Le vignettage : très visible à pleine ouverture , négligeable à F2.8
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
  • Les AC longitudinales sont moyennes
  • Distorsion très faible
  • La résistance au flare est correcte mais pourrait être meilleure

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are very good wide open but as of F2.8 we start to see the 11 blades.
  • The background blur is soft wide open , but can become a little bit nervous as of F2.8
  • The Color rendition is very good
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons biens ronds sans artefacts notables jusque F2. A Partir de F2.8 on voit un polygone à 11 cotées.
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est doux en général et agréable mais peut devenir un peu nerveux à partir de F2.8
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

The Yongno is the heaviest and longest . The Yongnuo is the most complete in term of ergonomics whereas the Sigma is the most simple one. About price : the sigma is in the upper range , the Yongnuo and the %Meike are the cheapest closely followed by the Viltrox. The Sony is quite old but proposed at a crazy price

Le Yongnuo est le plus grand et le plus lourd . Point de vue ergonomie c’est le Yongnuo le plus complet et le Sigma le plus dénudé. Point de vue prix le Yongnuo et le Meike sont les moins cher suivi de près par le Viltrox , le Sigma est dans la fourchette haute. Le Sony est hors de prix

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

The Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN is well above the other. The Sony is second. Viltrox / Meike and Yongnuo can also be excellent in the centre but their corners are not good wide open

Le Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN est loin devant les autres. Le Sony est numéro 2. Le Viltrox, Meike et le Yongnuo sont excellent au centre , mais les coins sont mauvais à pleine ouverture

4.3 Bokeh & Color rendition / Distorsion / CA / Resistance to flare

The Sigma has better bokeh balls, color rendition , resistance to flare, a bit lower CA. The Sony is also very good but its aperture of F1.8 is not allowing same level of background blur

All are similar for distortion and background blur smoothness

The Meike, Yongnuo & Viltrox are also good for color rendering but a little bit less for bokeh and background blur and Yonguo & Viltro suffer from visible CA

The Meike and the Sony are the best for distortion

Le Sigma est le meilleur point de vue ronds de bokeh , rendu des couleurs, resistance au flare et a un niveau d’Ac un peu moins élevé. Le Sony est aussi très bon mais son ouverture de F1.8 ne permet pas d’atteindre le même niveau de flou d’arrière plan

Les deux sont similaires en terme de distorsion et de douceur / nervosité du flou d’arrière plan

Les Meike Yongnuo et Viltrox sont bons point de vue bokeh à pleine ouverture et rendu des couleurs mais moins quand on ferme à F2.8 . Yonguo et Viltrox souffrent d’AC

Le Meike et le Sony sont les meilleurs point de vue distorsion

4.5 Conclusion

You get what your pay for : The sigma is 50% more expensive but it is better in most areas and a flawless lens to use except maybe from some CA that are typical for this focal length and aperture. Its only issue is the lack of aperture ring for video

The Meike is very good overall and well balanced and has low focus breathing for video, but others do better in term of sharpness wide open

On a ce qu’on paye , le sigma est 50% plus cher que le Viltrox , mais il est supérieur dans la plupart des domaines et une optique quasi parfaite , ses point faible est le niveau d’AC à pleine ouverture mais qui est typique pour cette focale et cette ouverture et son manque de bague d’ouverture pour la vidéo

Le Meike est tres bon globalement bien équilibré et son focus breathing est très faible en video. Mais d’autres font mieux en piqué à pleine ouverture

The Meike 23mm F1.4 (290$ / 251 euros) is a good lens overall : good ergonomics very good AF , build quality ,, color rendering, nice bokeh wide open. Very Good to Excellent sharpness on the entire field at F5.6 and excellent in the centre as of F2.8, Low CA, low focus breathing, low distortion, correct resistance to flare

The improvements are related to the centre sharpness wide open and to corners sharpness before level F2.8 and softness of the background blur as of F2.8

Alternatives

If you want the best 23mm in term of sharpness then the Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN (499 euros) offers excellent sharpness results on the entire field

Le Meike 23mm F1.4 (290$ / 251 euros) est globalement une bonne optique : bonne ergonomie, très bon AF, qualité de construction , rendu des couleurs, beau bokeh à pleine ouverture. Très bon à excellent piqué sur tout le champ à F5..6 et excellent au centre dès f2.8. Faible AC, faible focus breathing , faible distorsion, et résistance au flare convenable

Les points d’ameliorations sont le piqué au centre à pleine ouverture et dans les coins jusque F2 and et le manque de douceur du flou d’arrière plan à partir de F2.8
