Build quality is good. The aperture ring is clickless but is a little bit hard to turn

The lens firmware can be upgraded via a USB C port

AF performance

  • AF is relatively fast, accurate in general. In burst mode it loose focus when the subject come close (<3m) and fast
  • Eye AF / Tracking is working well

Performances AF

  • L’AF est rapide et précis. Pour de la rafale sur sujets en mouvements l’optique perd le point pour les sujets rapides quand ils sont proches (<3m)
  • L’AF sur les yeux fonctionne bien

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortion, flare, sunstars

  • Vignetting is strong at F1.8 and disappears at F5.6 only
  • Distortion is very low
  • Chromatic aberrations are low 
  • LoCa are moderate
  • Resistance to flare is relatively good
  • At F13 we can get some sunstars

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

  • Le vignettage est important à F1.8 et disparait seulement vers F5.6
  • La distorsion est très faible
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles
  • Les AC longitudinales sont modérées
  • La résistance au flare est relativement bonne
  • Des effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus vers F13

  • In video we get very nice results in term of sharpness, Bokeh, background blur . The color rendition is very good
  • The aperture ring is clickless , ideal for video
  • AF is good globally
  • Focus breathing is quite important

4 Comparison with other 85mm F1.8

The closest competitor for the are the 7 Artisans 85mm F1.8 (299$), the Meike 85mm F1.8 STM (200$), AstrHori 85mm F1.8 (276$) the Yongnuo YN85mm F1.8S DF DSM (345$) and the Viltrox 85mm F1.8 PFU RMBH STM which at 380 euros are 1.5x more expensive than the Meike! The reference being the Sony FE85mm F1.8 (600 euros) almost 3 times more expensive

The Yongnuo YN85mm F1.8S DF DSM , Samayang 85mm F1.8 and the Sony FE85mm F1.8 are very close and excellent, with the Sony having still a tiny edge over the others. The Viltrox 85mm F1.8 PFU RMBH STM and 7 Artisans are very good and the 2 Meike and the Brightin star are a bit less than the Viltrox but still very good. The AstrHori 85mm F1.8 has a bad AF

Le Yongnuo YN85mm F1.8S DF DSM , Samyang 85mm f1.8 et le Sony FE85mm F1.8 sont très proches et excellents , le Sony etant légèrement mieux. 6 Conclusion (English)

The Brightin Star 85mm F1.8 (300$) is a very good well balanced lens. Very good to excellent sharpness, very good bokeh balls wide open and soft background blur, good AF , very good color rendition, good build quality , good ergonomics with its clickless aperture ring but it is quite big and heavy , vignetting is strong and focus breathing is quite important.

There are tons of alternatives in same price range but none that is noticeably better , It closest competitors if you are ready to pay a bit of extra are either the Sony FE85mm F1.8 (430 euros) or the new Samyang 85mm F1.8 that is significantly lighter and smaller for 450 euros

Le Brightin Star 85mm F1.8 (300$) est une très bonne optique bien équilibrée : très bon à excellent piqué , très beaux ronds de bokeh à pleine ouverture, flou d’arrière plan doux, bon AF , très bon rendu des couleurs, qualité de construction correcte et bonne ergonomie avec bague d’ouverture sans clics. Ses point faibles sont la taille et le poids , le vignettage et son focus breathing

Il y de très nombreuses alternatives dans cette gamme de prix mais aucune qui ne soit nettement meilleure. Les plus proches concurrent sont soit le Sony FE85mm F1.8 (430 euros) soit le nouveau Samyang 85mm F1.8 P (450 euros) qui offre des performance similaires tout en étant nettement plus léger et compact

    Recently I acquired an beautiful BrightinStar AF85mm 1.8 FullFrame Autofocus Lens for Sony E-mount (firmware Ver.01) and I found a issue in my Sony Alpha7IV (firmware Ver.5.01)

    Shooting in DRIVE MODE (HI+, HI, MID) with lens diafragm selected in “A Mode” and camera in “M mode” if I change in the camera settings the diafragm value to a something different to 1.8 after shooting camera setting goes back to maximum apperture 1.8.
    In DRIVE MODE LOW apperture value keep after shooting.

    Did someone found this issue?
    It´s a real issue or i´m doing something wrong?

    I have another question.
    Is there a Photoshop Lens profile for this lens to correct aberrations?
    I searched in internet sites and forums but I didn´t find anything

    Can you or someone help me?

      I answer my own question
      “Issue Solved”

      It was a firmware version issue. Once updated with Brightin_Star_85mm_F1.8_EMount_V1.21.DAT solved.

      *BrightinStar site is not the best in the world. If you want to see other lenses firmware files you need to slide a side with right arrow in the keyboard. Then you can see other files.

      If someone have the same issue, download the last firmware … now it works perfect

      It´s very simple:
      Connect Lens USB-c to the computer (you´ll see a readme file)
      Copy/Paste the .DAT file in the same folder
      Lens Firmware Updated
