The build quality is good,  all in metal, with 2 rings : focusing and aperture that move nicely maybe a little bit too swiftly for precise focusing, the Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar a more dampening for more precise focus

La qualité de construction est bonne, avec un objectif tout en métal, les 2 bagues ouverture et mise au point sont agréables à manipuler, celle de mise au point manque peut être un peu de résistance pour une mise au point très précise. Celle du Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar est plus précise de ce point de vue

Macro position 

• When going to the max magnification ratio of 2:1 the full lens block is going up (left image), the bottom of the lens barrel is empty : the lens is designed with a kind of built in extension tube
• In standard position (non macro) most of the lens barrel is empty (right side) it act like a big lenshood, so big it causes a severe lens fall off when shooting at infinity
• En position de grossissement maximum 2:1, tout le bloc optique monte (image de gauche), laissant un vide à la base de l’objectif : l’objectif est conçu avec une sorte de tube d’extension intégré
• En position normale non macro (image de droite) le bloc optique est beaucoup plus bas ce qui cause d’ailleurs un fort vignettage puisque le fut de l’objectif agit presque comme un énorme paresoleil surdimensionné

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• In the centre , the lens is a very good wide open at F2.8  and stays very good up to F11, as from F16 there is a little decrease of sharpness due to diffraction
• Corners are equally very good wide open and at all aperture
• The lens is very consistent from centre to border

However performance is one grade below the Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar , which is excellent as from the start at F2

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• L’objectif est très bon au centre dès la pleine ouverture et le reste jusque F11, à F16 très légère baisse de piqué due à la diffraction
• Pour les coins même comportement très bon dès la pleine ouverture
• L’objectif est très piqué et consistent du centre au bords, une très belle performance

Il est toutefois un cran en dessous du Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar qui lui est excellent dès la pleine ouverture à F2

2.2 Comparison with Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar

The Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar (tested here) has an exceptional sharpness wide open, has a very low distorsion and even if it is a manual lens it has electrical contacts with the body to transmit lens identification and aperture information

The build quality is also top notch and the manuel focusing experience is really superior with an excellent focusing ring.

This come at a much higher price 900 euros and a macro effect limited to 1:2 ratio

2.2 Comparaison avec le Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar

Le Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar (testé ici) à un piqué exceptionnel dès la pleine ouverture , peu de distorsion et même si c’est une optique manuelle, transmet les info d’identification de l’objectif et d’ouverture au boitier.

La qualité de construction est superbe et la bague de mise au point est aussi plus précise permettant une mise au point plus efficace notamment en mode portrait

Toutefois cela se paye au prix fort (900 euros) et avec des possibilités macro nettement plus réduite : rapport 1:2

2.3 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Lens fall off is important when shooting in non macro mode as the lens block is quite inside the lens barrel and can be seen at all apertures. It never disappear. when shooting in macro mode the vignetting is much less present
• Distorsion is huge, I never saw such an important distorsion on a lens ! 
• I could not do a lot of outdoor tests to detect chromatic aberrations
• Flare resistance is weak 

Fortunately there is a lens profile in Lightroom that allow to correct lens fall off and distorsion

2.3 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage est important et ce à toutes les ouvertures en mode non macro, cela est du à la conception particulière de l’objectif avec un bloc optique coulissant dans un tube et en position basse à l’infini
• La distorsion est énorme , je n’en ai jamais vu d’aussi importante
• N’ayant pu tester que brièvement l’objectif en extérieur je n’ai pas détecté d’aberrations chromatiques lors de mes tests
• La résistance au flare est assez faible

Heureusement un profil de correction Lightroom existe qui permet de rattraper la distorsion et une partie du vignettage

 

 

3 Macro

If you buy this lens it is for doing extreme macro shoot with a magnification ratio between 1:1 and 2:1 

If you just want a portrait lens or a standard macro lens , other options exist with or without AF 

Above a ratio of 1:1 the depth of field is extremely tiny even at F8 & F11, tripod head adjustments or changing focus distance become really unprecise. You need some special equipment to correctly use this lens or be very good at macro handleld

• A 3 axis micrometric headball , to move the full camera millimeter by millimeter like the Manfrotto 410
• A rail to adjust very precisely the focusing distance or to do some focus stacking (serie of photos taken with tiny variation of the focusing distance) to increase depth of field,
  • manual one like the Velbon Super mag slider or
  • automatic ones like the Stackshoot Automated macro rail package

 

Si vous investissez dans cet objectif c’est pour l’utilisez pour sa particularité qui est la macro entre un ratio de 1:1 et 2:1. Pour un simple objectif à portrait ou macro standard d’autres alternatives existent avec ou sans AF

Au delà du ratio 1:1 , la profondeur de champ est extrêmement faible même à F8 F11 , les mouvements de rotules ou de bague de mise au point deviennent imprécis. Il faut donc un équipement spécifique pour ce genre de photo ou être très doué à main levée en macro

• Une rotule 3 axes micrométriques qui permet de bouger l’ensemble de l’appareil millimètre par millimètres dans les 3 dimensions (comme la rotule Manfrotto 410)
• Un rail de mise au point qui permet de faire varier la distance de mise au point millimètre par millimètre pour faire de l’empilement de mise au point (focus stacking) soit
  • manuellement avec un rail comme le Velbon super mag slider ou
  • automatiquement comme avec le Stackshoot Automated macro rail package

I did not had any of these with me so it was quite cumbersome to do a precise focusing

5 Conclusion

This Laowa 60mm F2.8 Macro 2:1 lens is unique in its kind , if you want to go over the macro ratio of 1:1 it is one of the only option  if you don’t want to use macro extension bellows/tube

• Sharpness is very good through the whole range and at all apertures
• Distorsion is huge but fortunately well corrected thanks to Lightroom lens profile
• Performance is non macro mode is not ideal due to the heavy vignetting

If you are serious and passionate about macro then you are ready to use the potential of this lens 

If you are more looking for a standard macro lens you better look at the Sony FE 90 f2.8 Macro G OSS

If you are more looking at a 60mm lens with sometimes macro the Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar could do it for you

 

5 Conclusion

Ce Laowa 60mm F2.8 Macro 2:1 est unique en son genre, si vous voulez aller au delà du rapport 1:1 cette une des seules options en monture Sony à moins d’utiliser des tubes d’extension ou des soufflets d’extension

• La piqué est très bon sur tout le champ et à toutes les ouvertures
• La distorsion est énorme mais heureusement corrigée par les profils d’objectifs Lightroom
• La performance en mode non macro est entachée par un fort vignettage lié à la conception même de l’objectif

 

Si vous êtes passionné de macro alors vous pourrez exploiter tout le potentiel de cet objectif

Si vous cherchez plus un objectif macro standard il vaudra mieux se tourner vers le Sony FE 90 f2.8 Macro G OSS

Si vous cherchez une focale plus généraliste aux alentours de 60mm avec la macro en dilettante alors le Voigtländer 65mm F2 Macro Apo Lanthar pourrait vous convenir
