Compared to the Sony FE 100-400mm (205mm) , the Sony 200-600mm is much more bigger and equivalent in size to the 100-400 extended to 400mm + TC1.4

  • Sony 200-600 : 318mm 
  • Sony 100-400 : 205mm  , but 285mm at 400mm and 302mm length with TC1.4 @560mm focal length
  • The 100-400 remains much more easy to carry in your backpack
• Weight
  • 2115 g vs 1562g ( 1395g + 167 for TC1.4)
  • The 100-400 is 25% lighter
• Price
  • 2100 euros for the Sony 200-600 vs 2900 + 580 = 3480 euros for Sony 100-400 + TC1.4
  • The Sony 200-600 is 30% less expensive

Remarks

• The better magnification ratio of the 100-400 and shorter minimal focusing distance is helping for close up
• With the TC1.4 the Sony 100-400 has a smaller aperture than the Sony 200-600, so for a regular usage at 560mm the Sony 200-600 will be a little bit brighter

Comparé au Sony FE 100-400mm (205mm) , il est beaucoup plus gros et équivalent en taille au 100-400 allongé à 400mm + le TC.14

Remarques

• Le rapport de grandissement du 100-400 et sa distance min de mise au point sont un plus pour la proxy photographie
• Avec le TC1.4 , le Sony 100-400 a une ouverture moins bonne que le Sony 200-600 donc pour un usage à 560mm , le Sony 200-600 sera donc un peu  plus lumineux

5.2 Usability / facilité d’utilisation

The 200-600 is obviously bigger , heavier and less portable in a backpack but on the field it is much more easy to use than the 100-400mm thanks to its internal Zooming. With a twist of a finger and a 70° rotation, you can zoom easily from 200 to 600mm , with the 100-400, the lens extend a lot require more effort (can’t be done with just one finger) and change the balance of the set and hence impact a little bit on the framing

Le 200-600 est assurément plus volumineux , plus lourd et difficile à transporter mais usr le terrain il se montre plus agréable et facile d’utilisation que le 100-400 grâce à son zoom interne : avec un seul doigt et un quart de tour on peut passer de 200 à 600mm; avec le 100-400 il faut utiliser toute la main, le fut s’allonge et rompt l’équilibre de l’ensemble ce qui affecte un peu le cadrage

5.3 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII,  with its 42 Mpix

I have compared both lenses at 400mm + The 200-600 at 560mm vs 100-400mm + TC1.4

• 400mm: performances are a bit better for the Sony 200-600mm: with excellent performances whereas the 100-400 is “only” very good
• At 560mm: the 200-600 is clearly better with excellent performances whereas the 100-400 with TC1.4 is “only” very good

• 400mm: Les performances sont meilleures sur le Sony 200-600mm avec des résultats excellents et seulement très bon sur le 100-400
• A 560mm: the 200-600 est clairement meilleur avec des résultats excellents et seulement très bon sur le 100-400 + TC1.4

5.4 Bokeh

Bokeh is quite similar / Le Bokeh est similaire

5.5 Conclusion Comparison

Even of not a GM lens the Sony 200-600 performs a bit better at 400mm and much better at 560-600mm than the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM

So if you usage is especially above 300mm and often at 500-600 mm the Sony 200-600 win hands down on the image quality and usability with its internal zoom

Its only drawback is its size

Pay attention to the complementarity with your existing lenses , if you have only a Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM or a Sony 24-105mm F4 you may have a gap between 70 and 200mm you may want to bridge with a Sony 70-200mm F4 G or a Sony 70-200mm F2.8GM , or stick to the Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM if you don’t go often above 400mm, it will also be much more light and easy to carry around

Même si ce n’est pas une optique GM le Sony 200-600 est un peu plus piqué à 400mm et beaucoup plus à 560mm que le Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM

Donc si votre usage est principalement au delà de 300mm et souvent 500-600mm , le Sony 200-600 remporte haut là main la première place en terme de qualité d’image et et terme de maniabilité grâce à son zoom interne

Son seul défaut est sa taille

Attention à la complémentarité avec votre parc d’objectifs , si vous n’avez que un Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM ou un Sony 24-105mm F4 vous aurez un trou entre 70 et 200mm à moins de render un  Sony 70-200mm F4 G ou un Sony 70-200mm F2.8GM , ou de rester sur le  Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM si vous n’allez pas souvent au delà de 400mm, qui sera plus léger et plus facilement transportable
