The build construction is very good. There is a large rubbered focusing ring in case you need to focus manually. 

The lens stays quite small and compact

The AF is fast and silent and the eye AF is working without any issues

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A6000, with its 24 Mpix

• Centre. : excellent at F1.4, outstanding from F2 to F8, very good at F11 , diffraction at F16
• Corners : very good at F1.4 / F2 , excellent from F2.8 to F8, very good at F11, diffraction at F16

• Centre : excellent à F1.4, superbe de F2 à F8, très bon à F11,  diffraction à F16
• Coins : très bon à F1.4/F2 , excellent de F2.8 à F.8 très bon à F11, diffraction à F16

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Vignetting  is very visible wide open
• Distorsion is quite strong in pincushion
• CA are very low but can be observed in extreme situation
• Resistance to flare is good but not particularly very good you can get some flare if you search for it

Lightroom is correcting both vignetting and distorsion automatically for this lens

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage est très visible à pleine ouverture
• La distorsion en coussinet est très visible
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles mais sont présentes dans les cas extrêmes
• La résistance au flare est bonne dans la moyenne, on peut en générer si on se met face au soleil à F11 sous certains angles

La distorsion et le vignettage sont automatiquement corrigés par Lightroom

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• Bokeh : excellent bokeh balls are soft and well rounded , as usual becoming oval wide open in the border and fully rounded everywhere at f2 . At F4 you see the 9 shaped aperture blades
• Background blur is very smooth and pleasant
• Color rendition is very good , but not as good as a Zeiss which is excellent in general
• Bokeh : excellent les ronds de Bokeh sont parfaitement circulaires et doux. Comme avec toutes les optiques à grande ouverture les ronds deviennent ovales près des bords à F1.2 et parfaitement ronds aux bords dès F2. A F4 on peut observer les 9 lames du diaphragme
• Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux et plaisant
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon mais pas autant que certains Sony Zeiss

3 Video

• The Sigma 56mm allows to take very beautiful portrait videos with excellent blurry background effects at F1.4, u fortunately there is no builtin stabilisation in the lens so unless you have a A6500 with sensor stabilisation or use a gimbal you make have some shakes. Also there is no aperture ring so change of aperture via the body will be heard and seen and cause a shake
• Le Sigma 56mm permet de réaliser de très belles vidéos : portraits avec de très beaux flous d’arrières plan à F1.4 . Malheureusement il n’y a pas de stabilisation dans l’objectif donc à moins d’avoir un A6500 avec capteur stabilisé ou une gimbal certains plans ne seront pas stables. Il n’y a pas non plus de bague d’ouverture donc le changement d’ouverture via la mollette du boitier sera audible et visible

5 Conclusion

The Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary (430 euros) is (one of) the best lens available on Sony APSC and will do superb job for portraits. It is the equivalent of an 85mm F1.4 on a full frame cameras. During a blind test most people to whom I showed results thought photos were taken on a full frame cameras with an 85mm !

• Excellent sharpness throughout the frame , with excellent performance wide open
• AF fast and silent
• Eye AF well functioning
• Superb background blur
• Excellent Bokeh
• Very good color rendition
• Low CA
• Reasonable price
• Small and lightweight
• Very good build construction and dust and waterproof resistant

Average

• Resistance to flare

Con’s 

• No built in stabilisation for video
• Distorsion and vignetting but entirely corrected by Lightroom, so a non issue

Alternatives

• Samyang 50mm F1.2 AS UMC CS  (480 euros) : excellent lens with similar performance as the Sigma 56mm  but fully manual lens and more expensive
• Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS (350 euros): very good performance overall but only good at F1.8 and corners are consistent with centre only at F5.6. For Video on A6000 much better than the Sigma thanks to the optical Stabilisation . If you have a A6500 with sensor stabilisation then Sigma will also be better in video

5 Conclusion

Le Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary est parmi les meilleure optiques disponibles en Sony APSC et la meilleure pour le portrait. Les résultats sont superbes avec un effet équivalent à un 85mm F1.4 en plein format. Lors d’un test à l’aveugle beaucoup ont cru voir un A7III avec un 85mm

Pour

• Excellent piqué sur tout le champ avec déjà un piqué excellent au centre dès la pleine ouverture
• AF rapide et silencieux
• AF sur les yeux parfaitement fonctionnel
• Superbe Bokeh et flou d’arrière plan
• Très bon rendu des couleur
• Très faibles aberrations chromatiques
• Prix raisonnable
• Léger et compact
• Très bonne qualité de fabrication et conception tout temps

Moyen

• Résistance au flare

Contre

• Pas de stabilisation ce qui est handicapant pour la vidéo sauf à avoir un A6500
• Distorsion et vignettage mais entièrement corrigé par Lightroom donc pas un vrai problème

Alternatives:

• Samyang 50mm F1.2 AS UMC CS  (480 euros) : excellente optique avec des performances similaires au Sigma mais plus cher et entièrement manuel
• Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS  (350 euros) : très bonnes performances globalement, mais le centre n’est que bon à pleine ouverture et les coins sont en retrait jusque F5.6 Par contre stabilisé optiquement donc bien meilleur en vidéo sur un A6000 mais sur un A6500 avec son capteur stabilisé le Sigma reprend le dessus
