1 Presentation
1.1 Introduction
The Techart LM-EA9 is an adaptor transforming most Leica M lens or even M42, M39, Canon FD lens into an autofocus lens on Sony E mount
It is the second version of this adaptor after the first LM-EA7 released in 2017, it is a fully reworked enhanced version less bulky and more efficient

C’est la seconde version de cet adaptateur après la LM-EA7, la nouvelle version est un redesign complet avec une cure d’amaigrissement et de nouveaux moteurs AF

How does it work ? The adaptor is equipd with 4 small motors that allow to move forward or backwards the full lens simulating the focus adjustment.
Just set your lens to infinity mount it. Then use it as a normal lens with your focus point. Thanks to this motor the adaptor will move the full lens and make the AF
For Photography this works as well in AFS or in AFC (incl tracking) , eye AF but not in video

Comment cela fonctionne t il : l’adaptateur est équipé de 4 petits moteurs qui permettent de faire avancer ou reculer tout le bloc optique permettant ainsi une mise au point
Regular l’optique sur l’infini et puis utiliser voters optique tout naturellement en choisissant votre point d’autofocus. Le moteur intégré fera le reste
Qu’est ce qui fonctionne : en photo les mode AFS, AFC (avec tracking) , l’Af sur les yeux. En video l’Af ne fonctionne pas
2 Mounting options / Possibilités de montage et limites
2.1 Principles
The Adaptor not only accept Leica M lenses but also plenty of other vintage lenses if you mount on top of the LM-EA9 another adaptor eg M42 to Leica M. This will allow to add AF on any M42 lens you have !
For the tests I had 2 Leica M lenses and 3 M42 lenses
L’adaptateur accepte les optiques à monture Leica M , mais aussi de nombreuses optiques vintage via des adaptateur additionnel ex M42 vers Leica M. Donc on pourra également motoriser des optiques M42, M39, Canon FD….
Pour les tests j’avais 2 optiques en monture Leica M et 3 optiques en M42
2.2 Leica M
I tested the
- Leica Elmarit 21mm F2.8
- TTArtisan 50mm F1.4 (Leica M mount)
Both fits nicely on the LM-EA9 and had no issues with AF (see AF performance section)
J’ai testé les

les deux se montaient sans problème sur la LM-EA9 et l’Af fonctionnait parfaitement (voir le chapitre sur l’AF)
2.3 M42 lenses
I used a M42 adaptor to Leica M mount on top of the LM-EA9 and I tested the
- Pentax Takumar 50mm F1.4 (8 blades version) M42
- Helios 44-2 : 58mm F2 M42
- Helios 40-2 : 85mm F1.5
I had no issues with the first 2 (see AF performance section), but for the Helios 40-2, it was over the weight limit and focusing distance was well over 4.5 mm hence I had much more AF issues with it
J’ai utilisé un adapteur M42 vers Leica monté sur le LM-EA9 et J’ai testé les

Aucun problèmes sur les 2 premieres optiques (voir la section performance AF) mias pour le Helios 40-2 , il était au delà de la limite des 500g et l’AF ne fonctionnait qu’une fois sur 2

3 Settings / Paramètres
The adaptor allow to changes a few settings. The main one is to set the focal length for the stabilisation
L’adaptateur permet de faire quelques réglages, le plus important étant celui de la stabilisation
Changing the focal length
The EXIF that will be transmitted are always the one of the Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM, but there is a way to set the Focal length for the stabilisation to work correctly
How to do it ? By default the Aperture visible in the camera is set to a F2. Set the aperture with the dial of the camera to according to below table eg F8 for a 50mm lens. Take a photo, the focal is now set to 50mm for the stabilisation then dial back to F2 (very important)
Changer la longueur focale
Les EXIF transmis par l’adapter seront toujours celle du Canon EF 40mm f2.8 ST, mais il y a un moyen de régler la longueur focale pour la stabilisation steadyshot
Comment : Par défaut l’ouverture indiqué par le boitier est F2. Tourner la molette pour régler l’ouverture ne fonction du tableau ci dessous, prenez une phot et revenez sur F2. Par ex F8 pour avoir une stabilisation qui correspond à 50mm
Changing AF mode
You have 2 focus mode a normal one (default) that you can set by dealing to F51 and a slow mode by dealing to F57. I did not see any significant differences between the 2 so I kept the normal mode
Mode AF
Il y a 2 modes AF : normal (par défaut) et lent (pour les optiques qui ouvrent plus que F1.4). Pour sélectionnez le mode normal il faut régler l’ouverture sur F51 et F57 pour le mode lent. Je n’ai pas remarqué de différences donc je l’ai laissé sur le mode normal
Firmware upgrade
The adaptor is shipped with a dock that can be connected to the computer Mac or PC for any firmware upgrade that can be downloaded from Techart website here
L’adaptateur est livré avec une station d’accueil qui permet de mettre à jour le LM-EA9 en connectant le dock via USB à un Mac ou un PC. Pour télécharger la dernièreversion du logiciel c’est ici
4 AF performances / Performances l’AF
Tests were made with A7RIV
- < 60mm AF performances are really good for the lenses between 20 to 60mm, just set the lens to infinity
- Above 60 and up to 90mm you need to do a prefocus either choose to cover from the minimum focus distance to a few meters either from somewhere like the double of the min focus distance to infinity
- Over 100mm there is just too much limitation to use it and as the range of focusing is very limited , you better do manual focusing
- I also tested with a lens above the 500g (Helios 40-2 = 85mm F1.5) and it was a bit too heavy for the adaptor to work
The AF performance was more efficient with the AF spot in the centre region and up to the lines of thirds , it as a bit slower in the extreme corner
Even if AF is good , it make a little noise and take up to 1 sec to do the focus so don’t except to catch a walking guy or do sports with it
AF is only for photo and not for video
Les tests ont été effectués avec un A7RIV
- < 60mm : les performances AF sont très bonnes , il suffit de régler votre objectif sur l’infini et tout fonctionne parfaitement
- 60 à 90mm : il faudra faire un preréglage en terme de mise au point pour choisir de couvrir soit la plage entre la distance min de mise au point et quelques mètres soit la plage entre l’infini et à peu près le double de la distance min de mise au point de l’objectif
- >100mm : il ya trop de limitation avec une plage de mise au point trop réduite pour moi , autant faire la mise au point en manuel
- J’ai aussi testé avec une optique >500g (Helios 40-2 = 85mm F1.5) et l’optique était trop lourde pour l’adapteur celui fonctionnant une fois sur deux
Les performances AF étaient meilleures quand le point de focus se situait au centre ou dans la région des tiers et un peu moins bon dans les coins extrêmes
Même si l’AF est bon et précis, il fait un petit bruit et prend jusqu’à 1 seconde pour se faire , donc n’espériez pas l’utiliser pour du sport ou des gens qui marchent
L’AF ne fonctionne que en photo et non en vidéo
Here below sample images take close to the minium focusing distance and further away with various lens. Focus was always accurate

5 Conclusion (English)
The Techart LM-EA9 (399$) is a very nice tool if you have lenses with Leica M mount or vintage lenses 42 , M39, EF, FD, LR….) that are below 500g and with a focal length <60mm. It allows to enjoy a good AF on lenses that were never equipped of it, allowing to have more photos in focus than traditional MF focusing

La Techart LM-EA9 (399$) est un très bon outil si vous avez des optiques Leica M ou vintage en monture M42, M39, EF, FD, LR….qui font moins de 500g et de longueur focale <60mm. Elle permet de rajouter l’Af à des optiques qui n’ont jamais été prévues pour , permettant de gouter les joies de l’AF et d’augmenter le taux de réussite de vos photos par rapport à une mise au point manuelle traditionnelle
Recommandé si vous avez des optiques M42 ou Leica M

Il est compatible avec le monture FD pour la monture FL je ne sais pas

J’étais très intéressé par ce produit mais j’ai cru comprendre qu’il altérait les performances optiques d’objectifs de qualité (typiquement ZEISS, LEICA en montures M) – d’où mon interrogation sur la pertinence de son acquisition : photographie t’on vraiment avec un Leica/Zeiss au final ?

bonjour, je ne vois pas pourquoi il réduirait les performances optiques, ce n’est qu’un adaptateur sans élément optique dedans, donc zéro dégradation, pareil que les autres adaptateurs leica M vers sony
pardon pour responding in English – there can be image degradation from Leica M to Sony E with rangefinder lenses, but not because of the adapter – the sensor stack is different and thus there can be a dip in the image midframe, but this is an issue with the sensor and will be present with any adapter, techart AF or standard manual. There are workarounds by adding certain filters that correct for the stack, but it’s a bit annoying ^^

You can also edapt Canon EF mount lenses to Leica M mount!
(My apologies for responding in English, it has been many decades since I lived in France as a child).
There is another reason (beyond the presence of a sensor stack, for which the lens was not designed) that performance might be sub-optimal.
If the lens is what is called “unit focusing” (all elements are “locked down” relative to each other, forming a single unit, and thus move forward as a single unit as the lens is focused closer via the lens’ focus ring), then no problem with this adapter, it simply substitutes for what the lens helicoid would do.
But if the lens has what are known as “floating elements” (elements that move relative to others as one focuses, to improve aberration correction at different distances), generally found on high-quality lenses with relatively-large maximum apertures (and more modern than the Super-Takumar or Helios shown), then those correction elements will be located at an incorrect and usually sub-optimal position if the lens’ manual focus ring remains at (any) fixed position while focus is achieved by instead moving the lens forward and backward on the adapter.
How much of a problem I would hesitate to estimate, it undoubtedly varies with the particular lens, the aperture used, the distance at which actually focused, and the degree to which that distance differs from the distance set on the lens’ focus ring.
But to make matters even more complicated, I wonder if it might even be possible that for some lenses, in some circumstances, the incorrect distance correction might actually help compensate for the now-present sensor cover glass?!

Perso j’ai eu un Angénieux 28-70 f/2.6-2.8 AF et sur un capteur déjà de 5MPIX KMD7D) c’était limite flareà chaque fois, alors un capteur de 24 Mpix ça aurait été surement catastrophique, donc ma question est sur un objectif tel que le Takumar ou l’Hélios mariés avec cette bague le résultat ne serait il pas le même ?
j’ai une bonne vingtaine d’optique argentique, zero souci de flare (anormale) sur A7 ou a6400, que ce soit en m42, canon FD, olympus zuiko, minolta MD ou contax yashica. il me semble que le flare est a cause de la frontale, si il y a un traitement multicoated pas de souci. en contre jour cela produit du flare forcement mais c’est normal

“eye focus working” … but only in the middle and horizontal orientation ? Vertical or fashion portraits not working? Or why did you only test indoors on printouts and did not go to your normal locations ????
As play a period of time, not certain how long, around 3~5 hours, it suddenly can’t auto focus but have very small sound like c..c.. , again it is not work at this moment, then same configure of camera swap to LM -EA7 , it is work & can auto focus, after that return to LM-EA9, it is same still “NOT WORK”, then over one night , try again, LM-EA9 is work & auto focus again. BUT, after play around 5 hrs , it is not work again.
Above scenarios , occurs twice , now occurred third , it looks very strange, I buy it not more than 3 days.
And , this approach I am difficult return product to seller shop , on my side is very confuse due to NOT useful to me if the problem still happen, at least I can’t bring it to travel !
P.S : I just update to latest firmware, but the problem still happened.
