2 Optical Performances / Performances Photos
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV, with its 61 Mpix (for full size sample see here)
Results are excellent in the centre as from F1.8 , you only get a minor sharpness increase when you close down to F2.8
Corners are already good but you need to close to F4 to get excellent results
A Superb performance
Centre / Centre
Corners / Coins
2.2 Sharpness in real life / Performances à l’usage
- Performance in real life are just superb : sharpness is excellent in the centre at F1.8 and very good in the corners and closed down to F4 it is superb to excellent everywhere
- Very good corners performance that become excellent when closed down
2.3 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare / coma
- Vignetting is quite visible wide open , you need to close down to F4 to make it low but it never completely disappear
- Distorsion is present in barrel but quite low
- CA are extremely low : I could not get any
- Resistance to flare is very good : it as quite difficult to get some flare and only in direct sun shooting
- The lens does produce nice sunstars when closed down
- Coma is low at F1.8 and almost gone at F2.8 which make the lens very suited for astrophotography, a much better performance than the Tamron 20mm in that respect (I could not do sample images due to cloudy sky but numerous samples in other reviews shows very low coma)
There is a Lightroom Lens profile to correct automatically the vignetting and the minor distorsion
2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare / coma
2.4 Bokeh / Color Rendition
- The Background blur is quite smooth , certainly one of the best blur performance I have seen on a 20mm (on par with the Voigltänder 21mm F1.4 Nokton), but below the one of the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM. As you can see from below photos it becomes sometimes a little bit noisier with busy background
- The very short focusing distance combined with the F1.8 aperture allow to completely blur the background and to have photos of close objects well detached from the background
- Very good bokeh balls almost perfectly circular (9 blades vs 11 blades for the 24mm) , a little bit oval on the edge , very soft inside the bokeh balls
- The color rendition is very good
3 Alternatives
There are several alternatives to the Sony 20mm F1.8 G
- For detailed explanations click on each lens link to see my full review
- I have also enclosed some samples images from the other lenses to illustrate the main differences
Sigma | 20 | F1.4 | DG HSM Art | 1000 eur | Tested | Album |
Samyang | 20 | F1.8 | ED AS UMC | 499 Eur | Tested | Album |
Viltrox | 20 | F1.8 | PFU RMBH ASPH | 410 Eur | Tested | Album |
Mitakon | 20 | F2 | Macro X4-X5 | 195 Eur | Tested | Album |
Tokina | 20 | F2 | Firin MF | 899 Eur | Tested | Album |
Tokina | 20 | F2 | Firin AF | 1000 Eur | Tested | Album |
Tamron | 20 | F2.8 | Di III OSD M1:2 | 450 Eur | Tested | Album |
Voigtander | 21 | F1.4 | Nokton Aspherical | 1000 Eur | Tested | Album |
Zeiss | 21 | F2.8 | Loxia | 1500 Eur | Tested | Album |
Voigtander | 21 | F3.5 | Color Skopar | 750 Eur | Tested | Album |
Overall the ranking is the following
- Sony 20mm F1.8 G is a clear winner : best sharpness overall, best AF, one of the best bokeh with the Voigltänder, 2nd for min focusing distance (Tamron is first with 11cm), best controls (aperture ring and buttons), very compact, best one for astrophotography
- Voigltänder 21mm F1.4 Nokton Aspherical (1000 Euros): little bit better aperture, excellent sharpness, but longer min focusing distance of 25cm vs 19cm and no AF
- Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8 (1500 euros) : excellent lens but the F2.8 aperture is limitative vs competition
- Sigma 20mm F1.4 DG HDM Art (1000 euros) does not do as good as the Voigtlander, huge (130mm) and very heavy (1kg)
- Tamron 20mm F2.8(450 euros) : cheap, macro capability, compact and excellent performances overall but corners behind the competition
I would avoid the Tokina Firin that sometimes have decentering issues and the Viltrox that has bad corners and therefore not suited for landscape photography
At the centre the Voigltänder 21mm F1.4 , Sigma 20mm F1.4 and Sony can achieve outstanding performances
- the main difference is the edge performance : here some samples around F2
- the Sony is first one , closely followed up by the Voigtlander and then the Sigma that is clearly behind
Bokeh and Background blur performances
Although the Voigltänder 21mm F1.4 has a better aperture F1.4 vs F1.8 it has a longer min focusing distance of 25cm instead of 19cm , so the quality of blur and the size of the bokeh balls you can get are superior on the Sony
Compared to the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM
The Sony 20mm F1.8 is the little brother of the 24mm F1.4 GM , with same controls, look and feel and similar size
Performances are very close
- The 24mm is a little bit better in term of corners sharpness and in term of creamy background blur , and bokeh balls (11 blades vs 9 blades)
- The 20mm is better in term of CA and resistance to flare
hello Marc, How do you think this lens compares to the 16-35 f2.8 wide open on f1.8 and on f2.8 ?
The 16-35 F2.8 GM is only very good at F2.8 on the A7RIV and excellent at F4 , see my article : https://sonyalpha.blog/2019/11/10/which-lenses-to-maximise-the-potential-of-the-sony-a7riv/
The Sony 20mm is outsntading in the centre
Also corners are one grade better on the 20mm vs the GM zoom
Marc I love the detailed review you make. Keep it up. On the point now, if you had the chance to test Batis 18mm, what is your thoughts. As both of them are for Landscape shooting (mainly) and aperture in that case would be f8-f13 both lenses I believe should react the same. I would love to hear your thoughts.
The new Sony 20 mm will be much better Than the zeiss batis 18mm on the 61mpix, better on 42mpix And Almost same on 24mpix
Another great user level review, Marc. Some wall chart shots with those radial(?) targets would be a simple but very useful addition to determine corner performance – I use the book method too but targets reveal better results for contrast, CA, CLA, etc.
Love this lens as much as you do – especially that linear manual focus! Feels like 1965 again! In the end, this is an f4 lens to me, tho, as a landscape/streetscape/astro shooter I need a full frame of potentially sharp image – not complaining, just sayin’. It is best of breed (for now) but I would love to see Sony make an f1.4 model with even better performance for that coveted GM slot!
Excellent video optic with Sony’s AF tech too – I’ve seen some work done that well utilizes the perspective it can provide from near to far subjects without the focus issues, etc. – better than zooming. All in all, a versatile 20mm with the the features and controls we need for nearly any shoot situation. Thanks again for your consistent efforts to reveal the everyday strengths and weaknesses of the glass we shoot with!
Bonjour Marc,
Excellent travail que tu nous propose la ! Merci encore.
Why do you refuse to test F1.8 lenses for sharpness at F1.8? It just doesn’t make any sense
I agree , this is why test was done at F1.8 and all other apertures , like any of my test , these are done at max aperture and smaller aperture
a 20mm F1.8 will be used mainly wide open or around F8 for landscape
Hi Marc, thanks for this review (and all the others that are very helpful). I was wondering : it seems to me this lens is more 19mm than 20mm, as my Batis 25 is more 24mm than 25mm.
Have you noticed it ?
I’m actually debating between B18f2.8 and this Sony 20f1.8G. If the Sony is actually a bit closer to 19mm in focal length, then this would make my choice much easier, since the Sony wins on almost all other aspects (save maybe color rendition, but I’m not sure I’d notice it). It would complement my Batis 25f2 nicely.
Thanks !
I did not had any other 20mm with me for comparison so can not tell, but Sony 20mm is definitively better than Zeiss Batis 18mm F2.8
Merci ! I’ll probably go for the 20f1.8 then 🙂
Bonjour Marc,

Hello Marc….really enjoy reading your posts and reviews…..I am a hobbyist photographer…..I have a question regarding A7R IV Aps-C crop mode which gives effective 26 MP…. well for a 20 mm full frame lens, the focal length gives 30 mm in aps-c mode…..does it also change the aperture technically from 1.8 to 2.7 approx….multiplying it with 1.5 factor?
Thanks in advance
it does not change the aperture but well the depth of field by one stop so a F2 has same depth of field as a F2.8
Bonjour Marc,
Merci
Oui c’est parfaitement approprié
Dear Marc,
Another excellent review. Thank you very much.
For architectural interiors / real estate sales advertising would you use this 20mm prime and crop your images or would you use a zoom lens in a similar focal length range ? In other words, is the quality you lose from cropping the image from this prime more or less than the loss of quality using a zoom lens in the same focal length range and not needing to crop ?
Thank you.
Fro Architecture I tend to use the Sony 16-35 F2.8 GM and a tripod it give me directly the shoot I need and I can better compose
very nice review Marc. Do you know of anyone who has used this lens for infrared?. Want to check for hotspots.
No , I don’t known anyone using it for infrared
Very useful report… but my usage is of another order… reproduction on a horizontal flat table (at 70 cm off the ground) of A0+ sometimes up to 160x120cm of very fine line architectural/urban design drawings, often calque… so at a certain moment I have to get up over 3 meters with my Sony 61 MP camera (which I plan to use also for multiple scanning going up to 192 MegaPixel. A prime wide angle lesn in the old days would have been out of the question because of the distortions they would give, but reading many reviews I thought it might work… with just a slight distortion after running the raw picture through a lens dedicated software (Lightroom I suppose) and also I wonder what Sony’s own software Edge can do… in post-production.
I would appreciate comments form those have experience using the Alpha A7R IV and FE 20mm
f/1.8 G lens (I now use the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro).
I will use a high quality wind-up (light) stand that can get up to 3 meter or more (NB the wprking table needs to be at 70 cm height not to break the backs of those doing the archival work).
Hi Marc,
I am unable to include screen prints but it seems your ratings for the Sony 20mm f1.8 vary depending on which comparison chart they appear on. All of your comparison charts reference the Sony A7RIV.
See the charts that appear in Sony 20mm f1.8 review to the chart in the Full Frame Lenses chart.
For example F2 Outstanding centre and Very Good corners on the 20mm f1.8 review page
For example F2 Excellent centre and Good corners on the Full Frame Lenses chart.
I can email you screen prints to see all of the differences.
Which one is correct?
Thank you,
Randy
corrected !
Hi Marc,
Unfortunately, I am unable to email you screen prints. But the Sony 20mm f1.8 charts are different on these two pages.
See F2 – On this page it is Excellent
https://sonyalpha.blog/2019/11/10/which-lenses-to-maximise-the-potential-of-the-sony-a7riv/
See F2 – On this page it is Outstanding
https://sonyalpha.blog/2020/05/03/sony-20mm-f1-8-g/
This just one example. There are other differences also.
Sorry and hate to be a pest but trying to help.
