- Zoom interne, l’objectif ne s’allonge pas
1.2 Rear filter holder / Porte filtre arrière
At the back of the lens there is a rear filter holder with a fall prevention lock
You need to make your filter by cutting into a filter sheet thanks to a shape provided with the lens (see below copy of the user guide)
So not the most easy if you are not precise , I hope some manufacturer will sell those precut soon
Otherwise you can always use a 150mm filter holder at the front like Nisi did for the Sony 12-24mm F4G
A l’arrière de l’objectif il y a un porte filtre avec un verrou
Il n’existe pas fe filtre tout fait pour cet objectif mais vous pouvez découper grâce au gabarit fourni dans une feuille de filtre. A reserver donc aux soigneux . J’espère que des fabricants tiers comme Nisi / Hoya fabriqueront les filtres tout faits pour cette objectif
Sinon il y a toujours la possibilité de monter des portes filtre de 150mm comme celui que Nisi avait fait pour le Sony 12-24mm F4

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV with its 61Mpix
- At 14mm In the centre results are very good wide open and become outstanding at F5.6 but corners are a little bit lagging behind, the lens is more consistent at F8 where it is excellent everywhere, diffraction starts at F11 on A7RIV
- 24mm was more disappointing with only very good sharpness in the centre and good in the corners
Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix
- A 14mm au centre results les résultats sont très bons à pleine ouverture et deviennent exceptionnels à F5.6 mais les coins sont en retrait et le champ ne devient complètement uniforme que vers F8. La diffraction commence à F11 sur lez A7RIV
- A 24mm les performances sont moins bonnes on atteint le Très Bon mais pas l’excellent au centre et le bon dans les coins

2.2 Sharpness / Piqué vs Sony 12-24mm F4 G
Compared to the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, you gain in term of centre sharpness at 14mm but you loose at 24mm. Corners are similar on both lenses
Comparé au Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, on gagne en terme de piqué au centre à 14mm mais on perd en piqué à 24mm. Les coins sont similaires sur les 2 optiques
2.3 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare / sunstars
- Distorsion is noticeable in barrel at 14mm and becomes low in pincushion at 24mm
- Vignetting is noticeable specially at 14mm but is quite low for this kind of lens
- Chromatic aberrations are very low in general but I could get some at 14mm
- Flare resistance is very good good but you still get them which is typical for such ultra wide angle lenses
- Nice sunstars can be obtained when stopped down to F16 – F22
- No visible coma => good for astrophotography
Lightroom lens profile corrects perfectly Distorsion and Lens fall off automatically
2.3 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare / effets d’étoiles
- La distorsion est visible en barillet à 14mm , devient nulle puis en léger coussinet à 24mm
- Le vignettage est visible à 14mm mais est faible pour ce genre d’objectif
- Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles sauf à 14mm
- La résistance au flare est très bonne mais on en aura toujours sur ce genre d’ultra grand angle
- De beaux effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus en fermant le diaphragme
- Pas de coma visible donc bon pour l’astrophotographie
Lightroom corrige automatiquement la distorsion et le vignettage pour cet objectif
2.4 Bokeh / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
- With the very small min focusing distance (28cm) and the F2.8 aperture you can get some blurry background with this lens. Quality of the blur is good considering it is a wide angle and those provide in general a quite nervous background blur
- Bokeh balls are very good
- The color rendering is very good and natural
- En combinant la faible distance min de mise au point (28cm) et l’ouverture de F2.8 on arrive à obtenir des flous d’arrière plans qui sont assez agréable et doux pour un ultra grand angle
- Les ronds de bokeh sont très bons
- Le rendu des couleurs est très bon et naturel

3 Video
In video the sharpness , color rendition and background blur is superb , but I had some flickering and light variations when zooming with this lens which I did not had with other lenses : I don’t know if it is the new 7RIV causing this , but I was really annoyed with this effect on my footage
En vidéo le piqué, le flou d’arrière plan et les couleurs sont excellentes, mais j’ai eu, lors de Zoom, quelques scintillement dans les plans vidéos et quelques hésitations d’AF que je n’avais pas avec d’autres objectifs. Est ce du à l’A7RIV, à l’objectif ? Quoi qu’il en soit cela m’a gêné lors de la visualisation des rushs vidéo

5 Conclusion
The Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art (1529 euros) is an Excellent lens on the A7RIV for architecture landscape and astrophotography
Pros
- Up to outstanding sharpness at 14mm at F5.6 in the centre
- Very Good corners
- Very good and natural color rendition
- Very good blurry background for a wide angle and very nice bokeh balls
- Distorsion well corrected by Lighroom
- Low Vignetting for a 14mm
- Low CA (except at 14mm)
- No Coma , so good for astrophotography
- Excellent build quality
- Efficient Weather sealing
- Very Good AF in photo
- Reasonable Price 1500 euros vs Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G (2000 Euros)
Average
- At F2.8 is only reach a “very good” grade
- At F5.6 , 24mm is reaching only very good sharpness vs Outstanding for 14mm
- Need to close to F8 to get consistency centre to corners
- Rear filter (requiring you to cut a filter film according to the provided shape)
- Size and Weight : but in line with peers
- Non removable lens hood (like all ultra wide)
- No optical stabilisation (but available in body)
Cons
- Limited focal range
- Flickering behavior in Video
- No standard filter possible (need to use 150mm filter holder)
Alternatives
You can compare this lens to 3 other Lenses
The only comparison that really makes sense to me is with the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, (2000 euros) as the 2 others really cover a different focal range.
Both the Sigma and the Sony are excellent lenses
- The Sigma will be more suited for low light photography and astrophotography with its F2.8 aperture
- The Sony offers a wider angle 12mm vs 14mm which is a lot of difference for a ultra wide
- Sharpness is a little bit better in the centre on the sigma at 14mm but Sony is better at 24mm. Corners are quite the same on both lenses
Up to you to see if you prefer a F2.8 or a 12mm, in all cases both lenses are excellent
5 Conclusion
Le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art (1529 euros) est une excellent d’optique sur A7RIV en architecture, paysage et astrophotographie
Pour
- Le Piqué atteint l’exceptionnel au centre à 14mm et F5.6
- Très bon coins
- Très bon rendu des couleur
- Beau flou d’arrière plan et beaux ronds de bokeh
- Distorsion bien corrigée par Lighroom
- Vignettage faible bien que présent à 14mm
- Faible AC (sauf à 14mm)
- Pas de Coma (donc très bon pour l’astrophotographie)
- Excellente qualité de construction
- Protection tout temps
- Très bon AF en photo
- Prix raisonnable 1529 Euros vs Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G (2000 Euros)
Moyen
- A F2.8 on a “seulement” la note “très bon”
- A F5.6, le 24mm est plus faible (= très bon) que le 14mm (= superbe)
- Besoin de fermer à F8 pour avoir une bonne consistance centre coins
- Filtre arrière ingénieux mais necessitant de fabriquer ses propre filtres suivant un gabarit
- Poids et taille , mais en ligne avec des objectifs équivalents
- Pare soleil inamovible (comme la plupart des ultra grand angles)
- Pas de stabilisation optique (mais dispo dans le boitier)
Contre
- Plage focale limitée
- Scintillement inexpliqués en vidéo
- Pas de filtre standard possible , il faut utiliser un porte filtre de 150mm
Alternatives
On peut comparer cet objectif avec 3 autres
La seule comparaison qui fait sens pour moi est avec le Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, (2000 euros) car les autres couvrent des plages focales assez différentes
Les deux optiques sont excellentes
- Le Sigma avec son ouverture de F2.8 se destine plus à la photo en basse lumière et ) l’astrophotographie
- Le Sony offre un angle encore plus large de 12m ce qui fait une grand difference pour un ultra grand angle
- Le piqué est un peu meilleur au centre à 14mm sur le Sigma mais le Sony est meilleur à 24mm au centre. Les coins sont relativement pareils sur les deux objectifs
A vous de voir ce qui est le plus important pour vous : une ouverture de F2.8 ou la focale de 12mm. Quelque soit votre choix ces 2 optiques sont excellentes
