The build quality is good all in metal

The Sol 45 has a center tack sharp circular area in focus while the rest is in the blur

Thanks to its tilt capability you can move around the location of the sharp zone

You also have a lock position achieved by turning the main ring to fix the lens in the center position

La qualité de construction est bonne tout en métal

Le Sol 45 a une zone centrale nette très piquée entourée d’un flou d’arrière plan prononcé.

L’objectif dispose également d’une bascule pour changer la position de la zone de netteté

Une position de verrouillage est également disponible pour garder l’objectif en position centrale

1.2 Bokeh Blades / Lames de Bokeh

The Sol 45 has also. two bokeh blades. Situated on hinged arms that hide at the edges of the lens, these two blades add lines and texture to the bokeh. To use the creative bokeh blades, simply bring the blades into the lens’s field of view and then rotate them in any direction – horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

Le Sol 45 a également 2 lames de bokeh. Situées sur des pivots, elles peuvent au choix se ranger sur le bord de l’objectif ou si elles sont positionnées devant la lentille frontale donner des effets de hachures dans le flou d’arrière plan

1.3 Focusing / Mise au point

• The focus is achieved thank to a small focusing ring at the front of the lens. It has a good grip and sufficient dampening
• Thanks to the focus peaking of the Sony mirrorless the focus is quite easy
• La mise au point s’effectue grâce à une bague située à l’avant de l’objectif. Celle-ci est texturée et permet une bonne préhension
• La mise au point est facilitée grâce aux fonctions de focus peaking des hybrides Sony

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• Sharpness in the focus area is excellent , it is certainly the sharpest Lensbaby I have tested
• When tilted you still keep a good sharpness but this one decrease to reach “only” good level
• Le piqué dans le zone de mise au point est excellent. C’est certainement l’optique Lensbaby la plus piquée que j’ai testée
• En position de bascule on garde un piqué correct avec un grade “bon”

2.2 Lensfall off /  distorsion / flare / CA 

• Distorsion is quite small
• Lens fall off is small
• No trace of CA
• Resistance of flare is poor

The poor resistance to flare is desired on those kind of creative lens to play with ghosting 

2.2 Vignettage / distorsion / AC / Flare

• La distorsion est faible
• Le vignettage est très faible
• Pas de trace d’AC
• La résistance au flare est très mauvaise

La faible résistance au flare est ici un atout créatif

2.3 Bokeh & Color rendition / Bokeh et rendu des couleurs

• The background blur is very smooth and creamy
• Bokeh Balls are perfectly rounded and when tilted some becomes ovals
• The Bokeh Blades give a special effect, adding lines to the background but not to the subject in focus
• The color rendition is very good
• Le flou d’arrière pan est très doux et crémeux
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont parfaitement ronds et en position de bascule certains deviennent ovales
• Les lames de bokeh donnent un effet très spécial et étonnant avec un fond flou hachuré et un sujet bien net
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

3 Video

• The Lensbaby provide nice effects and nice dreamy atmosphere. You should not abuse it as effect is quite strong
• Le Lensbaby produit de beaux effets avec une ambiance éthérée. Attention a ne pas en abuser au risque de lasser

5 Conclusion

This Lensbaby Sol 45mm F3.5 (200 euros) is really a surprising lens. 

On other Lensbaby lenses I often found that effects were too much present or that sharpness was really below average

With the Sol 45, it seems Lensbaby has found the perfect balance with nice creamy blurry background, very sharp subject in focus and very nice color rendition. The atmosphere created is very nice and give picture full of emotions

In addition you have

• Some tilt possibilities. 
• Bokeh blades that are a nice addition, to get some alternatives background
• You can also play with flare if you want, with some nice effect with the sun. 

I showed some photos to some friends and they thought is was : a 85 F1.8, a 70-200 F2.8, a 50 F1 ! 

The lens is very well built and easy to use : at 200 euros it open a world of creative possibilities without overdoing it for the bokeh effects

Immediately after returning my test lens , I order one for me ! Highly recommended

5 Conclusion

Le Lensbaby Sol 45mm F3.5 (200 euros) est un objectif qu’il faut essayer et qui réserve de bonnes surprises 

Sur la plupart des autres optiques Lensbaby je trouvais soit les effets trop prononcés soit le piqué en dessous de la moyenne

Avec Le Sol 45, Lensbaby semble avoir trouvé l’équilibre parfait entre flou d’arrière plan crémeux, un très bon piqué pour le sujet et un très bon rendu des couleurs. Les atmosphères crées avec cet objectif sont pleine de poésie.

En plus

• L’objectif dispose d’une bascule
• On peut jouer avec les effets de flare face au soleil pour une touche créatrice supplémentaire
• Les lames de Bokeh sont un complément original qui permettra de surprendre le spectateur

J’ai montré quelques photos faites avec le Sol 45 à quelques amis et voici quel objectif  il pensait voir : un 85 F1.8, un 70-200 F2.8, et même un 50 F1

La qualité de fabrication est bonne et l’objectif facile à utiliser: pour 200 euros on a une optique de grande qualité et très créative, sans non plus en faire des tonnes du cotés des effets de bokeh

Sitôt mon objectif de test retourné, j’ai passé commande d’un exemplaire pour moi.
