1.2 AF Performance / Performance de l’autofocus

The AF is fast , silent and efficient both in photos and in video . Accuracy in burst mode is excellent (tests on A6600 – see below video)

L’AF est rapide , silencieux et efficace en photo et en vidéo. La décision en rafale est excellente (testé sur Sony A6600 – voir la vidéo ci dessous)

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

A performance comparison table showing sharpness ratings for a lens at various f-stops, with columns for Centre and Corners performance from f2.8 to f16.
  • The tests were made on a Sony A6000 with its 24 Mpix
  • In the centre , wide open, the results are excellent and become outstanding at f4.
  • The corners however are only good wide open but get excellent at f5.6
  • An very good performance

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

  • Distortion is low
  • Vignetting is visible at F2.8, very low at F.56
  • Chromatic aberrations are very low
  • Resistance to flare is very good
  • You get some nice sunstars but there are not well defined
  • Very low coma (very good for astrophotography)

  • The background blur is soft at f2.8 but then get a bit busy
  • The color rendition is very good

3 Video

Video results are very good with an ultra wide perspective , excellent sharpness , very good color rendering , nice background blur, very good contrast and good resistance to flare, very good AF. Only sunstars could be better defined. The focus breathing is quite visible

Les résultats sont très bons en vidéo avec une perspective ultra large avec un excellent piqué, un très bon rendu des couleurs, un beau flou d’arrière plan , un très bon contraste , une bonne résistance au flare et un très bon AF. Seul les effets d’étoiles pourraient être meilleurs. Le focus breathing est assez visible

The Viltrox is the king in term of size weight and price and the only Prime with AF. The NiSi & the Meike are much cheaper than the Loawa equivalent, ! The NiSi size and weight is intermediate between Laowa and Meike. Laowa stays the champion for size,, min focusing distance. The Meike is the one with the best build quality

Le Viltrox est le meilleur en terme de poids/taille/prix et le seul (hors le zoom sigma) avec AF. Le NiSi et le Meike sont beaucoup moins cher que le Laowa. Le Poids et la taille du NiSi sont entre ceux du Laowa et du Meike. Le Laowa reste le champion en terme de taille, poids, distance min de mise au point. Le Meike est celui avec la meilleure qualité de construction

Sharpness / Piqué

Comparative chart of various camera lenses including Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D, Viltrox 9mm F2.8, NiSi 9mm F2.8, Meike 10mm F2, Samyang 10mm F2.8 ED AS NCS CS, and Sigma 10-18mm F2.8.

The best lens is the Meike 10mm F2 and the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN, followed closely by the Viltrox which is second only because of the corners sharpness wide open , it is followed by the Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D , the NiSi is the least good one mainly due its corners sharpness

L’objectif le plus piqué est le Meike 10mm F2 et le Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN , suivi de très près par le Viltrox qui se classe second à cause de son piqué dans les coins à pleine ouverture puis vient le Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D , le NiSi est le moins bon notamment à cause de sa performance dans les coins

  • In term of background blur, Viltrox and the Sigma are the smoothest and the ones with the shortest min focusing distance

  • The Distortion is very well low on all 3 prime lenses but high on Sigma zoom
  • The Laowa suffers form field curvature for subject below 5m
  • The Laowa and NiSi are quite bad for vignetting , the Meike and the Viltrox are good
  • The NiSi has there best resistance to flare and the best sunstars, the Laowa is the worst one in this respect. The Viltrox is in the middle

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

  • La distorsion est faible sur les 3 optiques fixes mais élevé sur le zoom Sigma
  • Le Laowa souffre de courbure de champ en dessous de 5m
  • Le Laowa et le NiSi ont un vignettage très important, le Meike et le Viltrox sont bon sur ce critère
  • Le NiSi est le meilleur en terme de résistance au flare et d’effets d’étoiles, le Laowa est le moins bon sur cet aspect. Le Viltrox est intermédiaire

  • All lenses have pros and cons :
    • Viltrox 9mm F2.8 : overall best for usability (light compact, with AF) / performances and money , excellent in all areas except sunstars precision
    • Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D : most compact and lightest very good to excellent sharpness on the entire field but expensive, high vignetting
    • Meike 10mm F2 : best sharpness , best colors, best vignetting but much bigger and heavy
    • NiSi 9mm f2.8 : best resistance to flare, best sunstars, but least good corners and high vignetting
    • Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN : best for convenance, AF , sharpness but more expensive
  • Toutes ces optiques ont leurs avantages et leurs inconvénients:
    • Viltrox 9mm F2.8 : le meilleur globalement en terme de prix, compacité poids, excellentes performances et AF. Seuls les effets d’étoiles laissent un peu à désirer
    • Laowa 9mm F2.8 Zero D : le plus compact et léger avec un très bon à excellent piqué sur tout le champ mais cher et vignettage très important
    • Meike 10mm F2 : le meilleur piqué, rendu des couleurs , et le plus faible vignettage mais le plus gros et lourd
    • NiSi 9mm f2.8 : la meilleur résistance au flare , meilleurs effets d’étoiles mais les coins les moins bons et fort vignettage
    • Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN : le plus polyvalent , avec AF , excellentes performances mais plu scher

6 Conclusion (English)

The Viltrox 9mm F2.8 (199$ / 229 euros) is an excellent wide angle lens for APSC. Affordable, compact and light excellent results on the entire frame and very good color rendering and has an efficient AF.

It will be ideal for architecture and landscape or astrophotography

Competitors are MF, bigger, heavier, more expensive and often less sharp ! The only real alternatives if the Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN (700 euros) that offer similar performances at 10mm but with more versatility and better sunstars

Le Viltrox 9mm F2.8 (199$ / 229 euros) est une excellente optique ultra grand angle pour APSC. Bon marché, compacte et légère . Le piqué est excellent sur l’entière té du champ dès qu’on ferme de 2 crans , le rendu des couleurs est très bon et l’Af est efficace, très faible coma

Il fournit de très beaux résultats en architecture et paysage et en astrophotographie

Les concurrents sont plus lourd plus cher et souvent moins piqué ! La seule vrai alternative est le Sigma 10-18mm F2.8 DC DN (700 euros) qui offre des performances similaires à 10mm mais avec plus de polyvalence et des étoiles mieux définies

    Just ordered mine up for Fuji! Expected delivery on Monday, Dec 29. I will have 3 primes for Fuji from Viltrox then. Those will be the only lenses for my Fuji I have. I otherwise have 3 Nikon DSLR’s and an assortment of lenses for them.
