1 Presentation

1.1 Who is Meyer Optik Görlitz

Meyer Optik Görlitz was founded in 1896 in Germany and has throughout its history developed a lot of high quality lenses (Trioplan-Primoplan) that were direct concurrent of Zeiss lenses

The company, based in East Germany  started to decline around 1970 and stopped its activity in 1991

In 2014 , Globell Deutschland company decided to took over the Meyer Optik Görlitz brand and to recreate with some Optical engineers coming from Zeiss Jena, some famous historical lenses like the Trioplan and the Primoplan. The initial Primoplan 100mm re-creation was financed thanks to Kickstarter.

The company did go bankrupt in 2018 and the brand was taken back by OPC Optics (Optical Precision Components) . After 18 months , production was restarted respecting high quality standards with more reasonable pricing (1000 euros / lens) and without looking for finance in Kickstarter. The lenses are assembled manually in Germany

1.1 La société Meyer Optik Görlitz

Meyer Optik Görlitz à été fondé en 1896 en Allemagne et tout au long de son histoire a développé une série d’objectifs de haute qualité (Trioplan-Primoplan) en direct concurrence avec les objectifs Zeiss

La société basée en Allemagne de l’Est à commencé a décliné dans les années 1970 et a arrêté ses activités en 1991

En 2014 , la société Globell Deutschland à repris la marque Meyer Optik Görlitz et a décidé avec quelques ingénieurs venant de Zeiss Jena de recréer certains objectifs historiques de la marque comme les Trioplan et Primoplan. Le 1er objectif issu de leur travail fut le Trioplan 100mm financé grâce à Kickstarter.

La société a fait faillite en 2018 et la marque a été reprise par OPC optics (Optical Precision components). Après 18 mois, la production a redémarré en Allemagne avec des prix plus raisonnable (1000 euros l’optique) et sans financement en Kickstarter.

1.2 BIOTAR 75

ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS LENSES IN HISTORY

In the 1930s, the ingenious designer Willi Merté developed the original Biotar 75 f1.5. In no time, the lens gained a legendary reputation and achieved great success. However, due to World War II and the high production costs for the time, production of the popular Biotar 75 was discontinued quite soon. Its great popularity and the simultaneous small number of well-preserved copies make the Biotar 75 an extremely rare lens.

THE LEGENDARY BIOTAR BOKEH

The high image sharpness in the center, coupled with a strong swirly bokeh, are the legendary imaging characteristics of the Biotar 75 f1.5 II. In swirly bokeh, highlights in the background are rendered in a circular shape and appear as if they have been drawn into a vortex. The sharpness in the center of the image and the wonderfully drawn bokeh in the blur give the subject a slightly three-dimensional feel. At the same time, the overall image appears somewhat delicate, which can create a great contrast in available light situations with clear shadows and highlights in the background.

Even when stopped down minimally (from f2.0), the Biotar 75 f1.5 II produces even more contrast, and between f/5.6 and f/8, the Biotar 75 f1.5 II reaches its maximum sharpness. In this respect, it makes many comparatively ‘young’ lenses look very old. Likewise, the color reproduction of the lens is very harmonious and balanced. Due to its almost apochromatic construction, there are no lateral chromatic aberrations, for example. Many photographers rave about the Biotar 75 f1.5 II and its capabilities that, going beyond portrait photography, can also be used perfectly in landscape and nature photography. Likewise, many wonderful fashion, sports, wedding, architecture and even macro shots are created with the Biotar 75 f1.5 II.

NEW VERSION OF THE HISTORIC BIOTAR 75

Capturing the historical imaging capabilities of the original Biotar 75 while optimizing the lens using state-of-the-art technologies was the main goal in redesigning our Biotar 75 f1.5 II. Thus, after intensive analysis and development, as well as several prototype tests, the best optical glass, a special AR coating and high-precision manufactured mechanical components are used. A look at the optical construction reveals directly that it is still a double Gaussian lens with 6 lenses in 4 groups.

LE LEGENDAIRE BOKEH BIOTAR

Le piqué central élevé combiné à un bokeh tourbillons dans l’arrière plan sont la marque de fabrique des Biotar 75mm f1.5. Les ronds de bokeh forment une sorte de Vortex dans l’arrière plan et le piqué élevé au centre offre un bel effet 3D

Le piqué augment rapidement à F2 et atteint son max à F5.6. Grâce à sa conception apochromatiques les AC sont très faibles

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV  with its 61Mpix & on a A7III and its 24Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• In the centre results are already good at F1.5 and reach excellence at F4
• Corners are quite bad wide open but reach excellent level at F5.6
• The lens suffers from strong field curvature so there is only a small zone in focus

For a vintage design like the Biotar this is a very good performance even if not up to modern lenses standards

• Au centre les résultats sont bons à pleine ouverture et deviennent excellent à F4
• Les coins eux sont mauvais à pleine ouverture mais deviennent excellent à F5.6
• L’optique souffre d’une courbure de champ importante avec une zone de netteté très limité

Pour une optique avec un design ancien c’est une très bonne performance même si éloigné des standards des optiques modernes

As the sharpness zone is quite small at F1.5 we got soft images on most of the field wide open, but close to F5.6 and you get very good results on the entire image

Comme la zone de netteté à F1.5 est très concentré au centre, la majorité de l’image paraîtra molle F1.5, mais si on ferme à F5.6 on a un très bon piqué sur tout le champ

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

• For centered portraits at f1.5 , we get good sharpness on 61Mpix sensor . As soon as you close to F2 sharpness gets better and reach very good level at F2.8
• For couple photos you don”t get enough sharpness at F1.5 due to limited focus zone, you really need to close up to F4 to extend the sharpness zone
• It will be mainly a lens for solo centered portrait
• Pour des portraits centrés, à F1.5 on obtient un bon piqué . Dès qu’on ferme à F2 le piqué s’améliore fortement pour atteindre un très bon niveau à F2.8
• Pour des portraits de couple : il sera très difficile d’avoir un piqué suffisant sauf à fermer à F4 pour élargir la zone de mise au point
• C’est donc une optique principalement destiné à des portraits unique centré plein cadre

Sharpness zone is very localised in the centre at F1.5 , if you have 2 peoples you really need to close to F4/F5.6 to get enough sharpness zone

La zone de netteté est concentré au centre , dès que l’on a 2 personnes il faut fermer vers F4/F5.6 pour avoir suffisamment de netteté

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distorsion, flare, sunstars

• Vignetting is strong at F1.5, decrease a lot at F2 but only disappear around F4
• Distorsion is very low 
• Chromatic aberrations are low
• Resistance to flare is average , typical of a vintage lens

• Le vignettage est très fort à F1.5 , diminue fortement à F2 et disparait à F4
• La distorsion est très faible
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles
• La résistance au flare est moyenne, typique d’une optique vintage

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition

If you invest in this lens it is mainly to get a some special bokeh and some vintage look 

close to the min focusing distance e75cm and with busy background you get light swirl background blur and some 3D effects in nice condition

The minimum working distance is 75cm , standard for such a focal length , with sizeable bokeh balls size

The color rendition and contrast are very good

2.3 Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

Si l’on investit dans cette optique, c’est principalement pour avoir un bokeh assez typé et un rendu vintage

Proche de la distance min de mise au point 75cm et arrière plan chargé, on obtient bien un effet de tourbillon et un effet 3D dans certaines conditions

La distance emin d émise au point est de 85cm (70 cm pour la distance de travail) ce qui est assez élevé et ne permet donc pas d’avoir des ronds de bokeh try grand. Les différentes versions du Biotar 58 F2 do’rigine ont une distance min de mise au point comprise entre 50 et 90 cm

l’ouverture à cause de l’effet bulle qui perturbe l’arrière plan.

Le rendu des couleurs et le contraste sont très bons pour ce genre d’optique

Nice results in video , with nice background blur, good color rendition and good contrast, good 3D effect and subtle swirly background blur.

Focus breathing is quite small

Bon résultats en vidéo, avec un flou d’arrière plan assez doux, de bonne couleurs et un bon contraste. Bel effet 3D dans les bonnes conditions et flou d’arrière plan tourbillonnant léger.

4 Comparison with Biotar 58mm G1.5 & Petzval 80mm F1.5

4.1 Competitors / Concurrents

The direct competition will be the original Carl Zeiss Biotar 75mm F1.5 selling for >2000 euros on eBay

If you are a fan of swirly bokeh you may want to look at the Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 Mark II, Bokeh Control (499 euros)

The new ones is cheaper than the original one

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

The Biotar 75mm II is quite sharp for a less with vintage design close in the centre to a modern lens like the Samyang 75mm F1.8 AF but with all vintage characteristics like swirling bokeh , reduced focused zone

Le Biotar II est assez piqué pour une optique basé sur un design vintage, elle est proche au centre de l’image d’optiques plus récentes comme le Samyang 75mm F1.8 AF mais avec tous particularité du design vintage : bokeh tourbillonnant , zone de netteté restreinte

4.3 Rendering / Rendu

• The Biotar 58mm F1.5 and Biotar 75mm F1.5 give subtle swirl bokeh and gentle 3D effects. they are the ones with the best resistance to flare
• The Helios 44-2 has more swirl and low resistance to flare
• The Original Carl Zeiss Biotar 75mm F1.5 has a little bit more swirly bokeh : see article here
• the Lomography Petzval 55mm F1.7 MkII and Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 Mark II, Bokeh Control can have enormous swirl and do have average resistance to flare

At the end it is a matter of taste of what you like

• Les Biotar 58 et 75mmm sont ceux qui donnent le bokeh tourbillonnant le plus subtil/faible et l’effet 3D le plus réussi. Ce sont ceux avec la meilleure résistance au flare
• Le Helios 44-2 a plus d’effet tourbillon et une mauvaise résistance au flare
• Le Carl Zeiss Biotar 75mm F1.5 d’origine a un peu plus de bokeh tourbillonant voir ici

5 Sample of Photos / Exemples de Photos

As you can see from below photos the lens when used in the right settings give a very good rendering but is clearly not a generalist lens.

Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos ci dessous , cette optique donne un très beau rendu dans les bonnes conditions mais n’est clairement pas une optique généraliste

6 Conclusion (English)

The Biotar 75mm F1.5 II (1399 Euros) is a very good recreation of the original Biotar 75mm F1.5

The new version is very well built , has good to very good sharpness, good color and resistance to flare and is cheaper than the original version which is very rare to find

If you buy this lens there are some limitations you need to know :

• The min working distance is quite long 75cm,
• the focusing area is very small and centre located at F1.5 so good for portraits/objects details.
• The swirl effect is present but not very strong

Alternatives

The Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 Mark II, Bokeh Control has a controllable bokeh from classic to strong swirl with 7 levels, very good sharpness and average resistance to flare

At the end it is a matter of taste of what you like

6 Conclusion (French)

Le Biotar 75mm F1.5 II (1399 Euros) est une très bonne re-création du Biotar 75mm F1.5

La nouvelle version est très bien construite, a un bon piqué, rendu des couleurs et une bonne résistance au flare et pour une fois est moins chère que l’original qui est assez difficile à trouver et à des prix exhorbitants

Si vous achetez cette optique il y a quelques points à savoir

• La distance min de travail est assez longue à 75cm
• La zone de mise au point est petite et concentrée au centre à F1.5 donc bon pour des portraits bien centrés ou des détails d’objects
• L’effet de tourbillon est présent mais pas très fort

Alternatives

Le Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 Mark II, Bokeh Control a un effet tourbillonnant contrôlable sur 7 niveaux du bokeh standard sans tourbillon a un vortex très prononcé et une résistance au flare moyenne

Le choix sera principalement une affaire de goût
