1 Presentation

The Sony 28-60mm F4-5.6 is the kit lens delivered with the A7c , it is much more compact than the Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens that equip all A7 kit since 2013. We will compare both later in the article

Although foreseen for the 24Mpix of the A7c we will test it on the 61Mpix of the A7RIV in this article

The very first impression you get with this lens is its lightness and compactness it is as compact as the Sony FE 35mm F2.8 ZA (Zeiss).

The build quality is correct, the lens is mostly in plastic , so not better or worse than the Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens

The lens has a retractable design : to is by default in closed position (white dot) and need to be engaged by turning it to the 28mm position , otherwise you will get an error message (see below)

The Zoom ring is not very smooth and it is quite difficult to get a smooth zooming (the Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens was much smoother)

The focusing ring is quite narrow , but turns smoothly should you want to use manual focus

To achieve max compactness and min weight the optics is reduced to the minimum : no button , no lens hood and no optical stabilization

AF performance :

• AF is very fast accurate and silent both in photo and video
• Eye AF / Tracking is working perfectly

Le Sony 28-60mm F4-5.6 est l’optique de kit du A7c , elle est beaucoup plus compacte et légère que le Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens qui équipait les A7 depuis 2013. Nous comparerons les deux plus loin dans l’article

Bien que prévu pour le capteur de 24Mpix du A7c , je l’ai testé sur les 61Mpix du A7RIV

La première impression est la légèreté et la compacité de l’objectif, il me rappelle le Sony FE 35mm F2.8 ZA (Zeiss).

La qualité de construction est correct , l’optique est principalement en plastique , donc ni meilleur ni pire que le Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens

L’optique est rétractable : elle est très compact fermée pour voyager (position sur point blanc) et se déploie en un quart de tour pour prendre des photos. Le boitier vous rappellera de déployer l’objectif avec un message d’erreur si vous l’oubliez

La bague de zoom n’est pas très fluide , on a des à coups en la tournant ce qui ne permet pas un zoom progressif en vidéo (là ou le Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens avec un bague de zoom très douce)

La bague de mise au point est fine, mais elle tourne sans accrocs lors de mise au point manuelle

Pour atteindre ce niveau de compacité et de légèreté , Sony a fait l’impasse sur le pare soleil, la stabilisation optique et tout autre bouton sur l’objectif

Performances AF

• l’AF est très rapide, précis et silencieux en photo et vidéo
• l’AF sur les yeux et le tracking fonctionnent parfaitement

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV  with its 61Mpix

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• In the centre : the sharpness is excellent wide open at all focal lengths
• In the corners : the sharpness is well below the centre , the situation is better in real life outdoor shoot for subject at infinity

• Au centre : le piqué est excellent à pleine ouverture à toutes les focales
• Dans les coins : le piqué est nettement moins bon que le centre. Les performances en situation réelles à l’extérieur avec une mise au point à l’infini sont meilleures

Sharpness in real life / Piqué en situation réelle

• Good performances in general with very good to excellent sharpness in the centre but ISO are quite high due to the small aperture
• Corners performances is relatively good with subject at infinity
• Bonnes performances en général avec un piqué très bon à excellent au centre mais avec des ISOs qui grimpent très vite vu la faible ouverture
• La performances des coins est bonne quand le sujet est à l’infini

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distorsion, flare, sunstars

• Distorsion (barrel) and vignetting is quite important at 28mm, but reduce quickly and are almost null at 60mm
• CA are not visible
• Resistance to flare is good
• There are nice sunstars effect which aperture closed down
• A Lightroom Lens profile exist for this lens since Dec 2020

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

• La distorsion (barillet) et le vignettage sont assez important à 28mm , mais se réduisent rapidement et sont quasi nulls à 60mm
• Les AC ne sont pas visibles
• La résistance au flare est bonne
• De beaux effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus vers F16
• Il y a un profil Lightroom pour cet objectif depuis Dec 2020

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• Considering the slow aperture, you need to be a min focusing distance to get some background blur
• Background blur (when you get it) is quite soft and pleasant
• Bokeh balls are good well circular but in some cases some outline at the border of the bokeh balls at 60mm
• Color rendition is good and contrast is very good

• En tenant compte de l’ouverture assez faible , il faudra être à distance minimum de mise au point pour avoir un flou d’arrière plan
• Le flou d’arrière plan est plaisant et très doux
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons: bien circulaires, mais avec parfois à 60mm des franges d’aberrations chromatiques sur les bords
• Le rendu des couleurs est bon avec un bon contraste

3 Video

• Results are ok in video as you benefits from the in body image stabilisation.
• The focusing ring is a little bit hard to turn and does not allow to have a smooth zoom
• AF works perfectly
• Les résultats sont corrects en vidéo , on bénéficie de la stabilisation du boitier
• La bague de mise au point et dure et ne permet pas d’avoir un zoom fluide en vidéo
• L’AF est très bon

4 Comparison with Sony 28-70 F3.5-5.6 kit lens

Is the new 28-60mm better than the kit lens Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 (Kit lens) that is dated from Oct 2013 (7 years old !) Let’s have a look

Est ce que le 28-60mm est meilleur que l’objectif du kit Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 qui date de Octobre 2013 ? (7 ans !). Voyons cela de plus près

Specifications

From a specifications perspective the new 28-60 kit lens is much smaller and lighter than the old 28-70 kit lens by losing 10mm and a little bit of aperture at the low end. It also lose optical stabilisation

Build quality is roughly equivalent but the zoom ring on the new 28-60 is not smooth at all , it is impossible to get a smooth zoom the old 28-70 has a much better fluid zoom ring

Also the 60mm on the Sony 28-60 is not a real 60, it correspond to 55m on the Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6, making globally a non neglictible difference of 15mm

D’un point de vue specifications , le nouveau 28-60mm est beaucoup plus petit et léger que le 28-70 , mais au prix de 10mm de longueur focale et de la perte de la stabilisation optique

La qualité de construction est assez similaire et moyenne, mais la bague de zoom du 28-60 est assez désagréable et pas du tout fluide, celle du 28-70 est bien meilleure

Autre point à prendre en compte le 60mm du 28-60 est équivalent à 55mm sur le 28-70mm, donc globalement on a près de 15mm de différence d focale ce qui n’est pas négligeable

Sharpness / Piqué

• In the centre the 28-60 is better than than 28-70 on the A7RIV reaching consistently excellent sharpness with is very good for a kit lens
• Corners are lagging behind being average to good at best, so like the old kit lens, its main weakness is for landscape shooter in the corners
• Au centre le 28-60 est meilleur que le 28-70 sur A7RIV et atteint le grade excellent à toutes les focales ce qui est très bon pour une optique de kit
• Les coins eux sont moyens à bons, comme sur l’ancienne optique de kit, pas de miracle donc ici pour les paysagistes

Background Blur & Bokeh Balls / Flous d’arrière plan et Ronds de Bokeh

• Both lenses exhibit soft background blur but the 28-70 with is longer focal length at same aperture allow to have more background blur and bigger bokeh balls which makes it more suited for portraits
• Color rendition is a bit better on the new 28-60 , the 28-70 had colors a little bit muted
• Les deux optiques ont un beau flou d’arrière plan mais le 28-70 avec sa longueur focale supérieure permet d’avoir plus de flou d’arrière plan et est donc plus approprié pour du portrait
• Le rendu des couleurs est un peu meilleur sur le 28-60 (le 28-70 est un peu terne)

Distorsion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

• The 28-60 is better in term of distortion for the long end , but as both lens will be automatically corrected in Lightroom this is not a differentiating factor
• CA and flare are well managed on both lenses

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• Le 28-60 a moins de distorsion que le 28-70 à 40 et 60mm, mais les deux sont/seront corrigés par Lightroom automatiquement donc pas un facteur différentiateur
• Les AC et le flare sont bien maitrisés

The new 28-60 is a little bit faster than the 28-70

Le nouveau 28-60 est un peu plus rapide que le 28-70

5 Sample of Photos / Exemples de Photos

The 28-60 delivers good “standard” photos , well sharp in the centre and contrasty. However the small aperture will quickly make ISO climbing to 800 to 3200 ISO and does not allow for very creative photos

Le 28-60 délivre de bonnes photos “standard” : bien piqué au centre, bon contraste couleurs agréables. Néanmoins la faible ouverture ne permet pas beaucoup de créativité et les ISO grimpent très rapidement

6 Conclusion

The Sony 28-60 F4-5.6 kit lens of A7c will be the ideal companion for the A7c , its main advantage are its light weight & compact form without any sacrifice on quality vs old Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 (Kit lens). It will do even better in term color rendering , AF and centre sharpness (but no miracle for the corners)

6 Conclusion

L’optique de kit Sony 28-60 F4-5.6 sera le companion idéal du A7c pour rester compact et sortir léger. Il atteint son objectif de légèreté et compacité sans sacrifier sur la qualité par rapport au Sony FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 (Kit lens). Il fera même mieux en terme d’AF de rendu des couleur et en terme de piqué au centre (mais pas de miracle pour les coins).
