The Samyang 35mm F1.8 is part of the Tiny F1.8 lenses series of Samyang that include

The very first impression you get with this lens is its lightness and compactness .

We can also notice a switch button to go from Mode 1 to mode 2. This mode introduced with the Samyang 75mm F1.8 AF, allowing to transform the focusing ring into an clickless aperture ring very handy in video and even in photo.

It is weather sealed and the build quality is good although you feel it is below a GM or Zeiss lens and a little bit less though than the Sony FE 35mm F1.8

Le Samyang 35mm f1.8 fait partie de la série “Tiny” (=petit) d’optiques compactes à F1.8 de Samyang qui comprend les

La première impression est la légèreté et la compacité de l’objectif, tout en ayant une protection tout temps. La qualité de construction est bonne mais en deçà d’un Sony GM ou d’un Zeiss et une impression d’un peu moins solide que le Sony FE 35mm F1.8

Un des points fort de cet objectif est le commutateur qui permet de basculer entre 2 modes. Le Mode 2 transforme la bague de mise au point en une bague d’ouverture sans clics très pratique en vidéo et en photo

Performances AF

• l’AF est très rapide, précis et silencieux en photo et vidéo
• l’AF sur les yeux et le tracking fonctionnent parfaitement
• On note un focus breathing assez marqué

2 Optical performances / Performances Optiques

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV  with its 61Mpix

Les tests ont été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• In the centre : the sharpness is very good f1.8 and outstanding as of F2.8 up to F8,  diffraction at F11
• In the corners : sharpness is already good at 1.8, excellent as of F2.8 up to F8, diffraction at F11

Excellent performances at this price point !

• Au centre : le piqué est excellent à F1.8 et devient superbe à F2.8 jusque F8, diffraction à F11
• Dans les coins : le piqué est bon à F1.8, excellent à partir de F2.8 jusque F8 , diffraction à F11

Les performances sont superbes pour une optique aussi compacte et de prix raisonnable

Sharpness for portraits / Piqué pour les portraits

• The lens has no issues with the 61Mpix and is resolving an incredible amount of detail while not being harsh for the skins; If you want tack sharp images use F2.8 for portraits
• L’objectif n’a aucun souci avec le capteur de 61Mpix, et montre un niveau de détail très élevé tout en étant respectueux des peaux (pas trop de contraste qui mettrait en avant les défauts de la peau). A F2.8 on a des images super piquées en portrait

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distorsion, flare, sunstars

• Vignetting is present at F1.8, become very small as of F2.8 and disappear around F8
• Distorsion is moderate (barrel) 
• Lateral Chromatic aberrations are visible wide open, specially in the borders
• Resistance to flare is very good
• There are nice sunstars effect which aperture closed down
• There is not yet a Lightroom Lens profile for this lens but this should come soon

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

• Le vignettage est présent à F1.8, devient négligeable vers F2.8 et disparait à F8
• La distorsion est modérée en barillet
• Les aberrations chromatiques latérales sont visibles à pleine ouverture surtout près des bords
• La résistance au flare est très bonne
• De beaux effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus vers F16
• Il n’y a pas encore de profil Lightroom pour cet objectif mais cela ne saurait tarder

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The Bokeh balls are good : well circular but when you zoom 100% you see some trace of onion rings and fringing at the border
• The background blur is very good : very soft even with busy background (better than the Sony 35mm F1.8)
• Color rendition is very good and natural

• Les ronds de Bokeh sont bons: bien circulaires, mais quand on zoom à 100 % on peut voir des traces de tranches d’oignons et des traces de franges d’aberrations chromatiques sur les bords
• Le flou d’arrière plan est plaisant et très doux même quand l’arrière plan est fouilli
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon et naturel

3 Video

• Very good results in term of Bokeh, background blur smoothness and color rendition in video, very nice rendering for portraits
• Thanks to a switch on the lens you can get a clickless aperture which is very convenient
• AF works perfectly
• Some focus breathing is visible
• Très bon résultats en vidéo avec un très beau flou d’arrière plan très doux, de beaux ronds de Bokeh et un très bon rendu des couleurs, globalement de très beaux portraits peuvent être obtenus
• Grâce au mode 2 on peut avoir une bague d’ouverture sans clics en vidéo
• L’AF est très bon
• Focus breathing visible

4 Comparison with other 35mm F1.8

There are many 35mm F1.4 with AF which are more bulky , the best of all is the Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art (1500 euros)

If we are now limiting ourselves to the ones with small factor and with AF the main competitor is the Sony FE 35mm F1.8 (700 euros)

Il y a beaucoup de 35mm F1.4 avec AF qui sont tous beaucoup plus encombrant, le meilleur toutes catégories confondues étant le Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art (1500 euros)

Si on se limite à ceux qui sont compact et avec AF , le concurrent tout désigné est le Sony FE 35mm F1.8 (700 euros)

• Sony Distagon FE 35mm F1.4 Zeiss (1500 euros)
• Sigma 35mm F1.2 DG DN Art (1500 euros)
• Sigma 35mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art (750 euros)
• Samyang 35mm F1.4 AF (650 euros)

From a specifications perspective the Samyang is much cheaper than the Sony and a little bit smaller and lighter. The Sony has a little bit better build quality and can focus at closer distance for proxy macro so you will be able to get more blurry background at close distance with the Sony

D’un point de vue spécifications, le Samyang est beaucoup moins cher que le Sony, un peu plus compact et léger. Le Sony a une finition légèrement meilleure et peut faire la mise au point beaucoup plus près (pratique en proxy photographie)

Sharpness / Piqué

• Both lenses are very similar in term of sharpness but the Samyang is a little bit better in term of sharpness
• Although at minimum focusing distance the Samyang does not performs as well as when you use it at normal distance 1-3m. The Sony has better sharpness at min focusing distance
• Les deux optiques sont très similaires en terme de piqué mais le Samyang est globalement un peu meilleur
• A très courte de distance (30cm) les performances du Samyang sont un peu moins bonnes que à moyenne distance (>1m). Le Sony prend l’avantage dans ce scénario

Background Blur & Bokeh Balls / Flous d’arrière plan et Ronds de Bokeh

• The Sony FE 35mm F1.8 has very good bokeh balls,
• The Sony FE 35mm F1.8 show in some occasion a busy background blur. This is obvious when you compare it with it peers
• The Samyang has good bokeh balls but they can exhibit a little bit of onion rings , so a tad less good than the Sony on that point
• The background blur of the Samyang is very smooth and less nervous than the Sony
• Le Sony FE 35mm F1.8 a de très beaux ronds de bokeh
• Le Sony FE 35mm F1.8 montre dans certaines occasions un flou d’arrière plan nerveux. C’est particulièrement visible quand on le compare côte à cite avec les autres 35mm
• Le Samyang a de beaux ronds de bokeh mais on peut apercevoir parfois des tranches d’oignons et des franges chromatiques sur les bords
• Le flou d’arrière plan du Samyang est très doux et meilleur que le Sony plus nerveux

Portraits

1. The Samyang has a better rendering for portraits and skins , the Sony is very contrasty and harsch
2. Le Samyang a un meilleur rendu pour les portraits et la peau, le Sony est très contrasté et dur et donc peu flatteur en portrait

Distorsion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

• The Samyang has a barrel distorsion the Sony a pincushion one , both are moderate but the Sony is already corrected in Lightroom
• The vignetting is roughly equivalent but decreases maybe a little bit faster on the Samyang
• The CA level is higher on the Samyang (more color fringing)
• The resistance to flare is a little bit better on the Samyang

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

• Le Samyang a une distorsion en barillet , le Sony en coussinet, la distorsion est faible dans les deux cas , mais le Sony est déjà supporté en Lightroom
• Le Vignettage est présent sur les deux optiques à pleine ouvertures et diminue peut être un peu plus vite sur le Samyang
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont plus importantes sur le Samyang (plus de franges colorées à pleine ouverture)
• La résistance au flare est un peu meilleure sur le Samyang

Sony FE 35mm F1.8 at F1.8

Autofocus

They are all very close : very fast, accurate , efficient in low light. The small difference of AF between them are not a real differentiating factor. Maybe the Sony is a little bit faster

Note that Samyang has noticeable focus breathing and Sony not. Sony is also focusing much closer 22cm vs 29cm

Ils sont très proches : très rapide, précis et efficace meme en basse lumière. Ce n’est donc pas un facteur différentiateur, même si le Sony semble un poil plus rapide

A noter le Samyang a pas mal de focus breathing par rapport au Sony. Le Sony permet également une mise au point beaucoup plus rapprochée 22cm contre 29cm pour le Samyang

5 Sample of Photos / Exemples de Photos

Excellent results in portraits, street photography : very sharp , natural color rendering , soft background blur

Excellents résultats en portrait et photographie de rue : très piqué sans être dur, beau rendu des couleurs, très naturel, et flou d’arrière plan doux

6 Conclusion

The Samyang 35mm F1.8 (400 euros) is another gem from Samyang : excellent sharpness and background blur, efficient AF and lightweight.

Samyang has now a full lineup of tiny, excellent performances F1.8 lenses that will be a perfect match on the A7c or any A7 if you want to travel light. They are all priced around 350-400 euros and the 35mm and 75mm benefits from the new focusing/clickless aperture ring

It competes directly with the Sony FE 35mm F1.8 (700 euros), compared to it , the Samyang has

• A little bit better sharpness than the Sony

• A better rendering for portrait and skin (the Sony being too contrasty)
• A focusing ring than can become a clickess aperture ring

Even if they would be priced the same, my personal choice between the 2 will be the Samyang 35mm F1.8 due to its better background blur, better skin rendering and cliclkless aperture ring. The good news is that it cost 400 euros instead of 700 euros!

6 Conclusion

Le Samyang 35mm F1.8 (400 Euros) est une autre pépite de Samyang : excellent piqué et flou d’arrière plan, AF efficace et silencieux et tout peut et léger

Samyang a maintenant une gamme complète d’optiques compactes, hautes performances à grande ouverture F1.8 qui seront idéales sur un A7c ou un A7 pour voyager léger. Elles sont toutes aux alentours de 400 euros et les 35mm et 75mm bénéficient de la bague de mise au point qui peut devenir un bague d’ouverture sans clics

Cette optique entre en concurrence directe avec le Sony FE 35mm F1.8 (700 euros), comparée à elle, le Samyang offre

• Un meilleur flou d’arrière plan (moins dur que le Sony)
• Un meilleur rendu pour les portraits et les peaux en général (Le Sony est très dur pour les portraits)
• Une bague de mise au point qui peut se transformer en bague d’ouverture sans clics

Même si le prix était similaire, mon choix personnel se tournerait vers le Samyang 35mm F1.8 pour son meilleur flou d’arrière plan et son meilleur rendu en portrait. La bonne nouvelle c’est que en plus il est beaucoup moins cher !

• Le piqué à pleine ouverture à très courte distance est moins bon que à distance normale (>50cm)
