2 Optical performances / Performances optiques
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix
- 24mm :
- Centre : excellent from F4 to F8, diffraction already start at F11 with subtle decrease of sharpness
- Corners : good at F4, very good at F5.6 up to F11, diffraction as from F16
- 35mm :
- Centre : very good at F4, excellent from F5.6 to F11, diffraction starts at F16
- Corners : good at f4 ; very good from F5.6 to F11, diffraction starts at F16
- 50mm :
- Centre : excellent at all apertures, diffraction start at F16 with subtle decrease of sharpness
- Corners : very good at all apertures, diffraction start at F16 with subtle decrease of sharpness
- 70mm :
- Centre: Very good-excellent at all apertures, diffraction start at F16
- Corners : good at F4, very good from F5.6 up to F11 , diffraction at F16
- 105mm :
- Centre: Excellent at all apertures, diffraction start at F16 with subtle decrease of sharpness
- Corners : Good at F4 , progressively increase up to very good at F11
The lens is always excellent in the center at all focal lengths and corners are 1 grade below but can always reach the very good grade
50mm is the best focal length, 24 & 105 are the weakest in the corners

2.2 Lens Fall off / Distorsion
- Lens fall off is present mostly at 24m and disappear when you close down
- Distorsion is the weakest point of the lens : Sony did make an excellent lens in term of sharpness but quite bad in term of distortion. This is not a bad tradeoff as lens profile allows to correct such issues very well.
- At the time of the review there was no lens profile so we did compare the raw without any correction to the built in jpg with corrections applied in the body
- 24mm : You see black corners, barrel distorsion is very important. The lens is certainly more a 22-3mm that give a 24mm after correction
- 35mm : little to moderate pincushion distorsion
- 50mm : moderate to strong pincushion distorsion
- 70mm : moderate to strong pincushion distorsion
- 105mm: : moderate pincushion distorsion
2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion
2.3 Chromatic aberrations / Flare / Sunstars
- Flare resistance is very good
- Chromatic aberrations are very well controlled , I did not notice any in my real life shoots
- The lens produce nice sunstars when aperture is stopped down
2.3 Aberrations chromatiques / Flare / Etoiles
2.4 Bokeh
- Bokeh is really nice with almost perfect round bokeh circle thanks to the 9 blades aperture
- of course it is an f4 and you can not get a blurry background like a F2.8, but if you use the 70-105 mm range you can well isolate your subject from the background
- The blurry background renders beautifully
Color rendition is pleasant and colors are well saturated and balanced

4 Video
- The sony FE 24-105mm F4 give very nice blurry blackground in video
- it has been designed with minimal focus breathing and angle variation
5 Conclusion
The Sony 24-105 F4 was longly awaited by Sony users as a key trans-standard zoom
Sony has delivered a superb lens , much better than the Sony FE 24-70mm F4 Zeiss OSS, way above the Sony FE 24-240mm F3.5-F6.3
- The lens is always excellent in the center and corners are just 1 grade below but can always reach the very good grade
- Bokeh is very nice, with beautiful blurry background
- Very good resistance to flare, no CA
- Very nice results in video with nice blurry background
- Construction is very good and lens is equipped with all relevant knobs : button than can be assigned to eye AF, AF/MF switch, Optical stabilisation
The tradeoff made to sacrifice distorsion (quite important) for sharpness is a good one to my opinion as those will be automatically corrected by a lightroom lens profile very soon
With its correct price tag of 1350 euros, I expect this lens to become the standard high quality zoom lens for A7RIII/A9 if you don’t want to invest in the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM
Highly recommended !
5 Conclusion

Thanks for the review!
How does it compare with the 24-70 GM?
24-70 has much less distorsion
and sharpness is corner is superior
center sharpness is a tad better on GM at F4 but similar as from F5,6
Thanks for the great review
Black corners @ 24/4? Hmmm.
Finally a review 🙂 well done getting it done so fast, and very good review 🙂
Thisnis the lens I’ve been waiting for, the performance at f8 makes it look like it will be an excellent landscape lens.
hi Marc, Thanks for the review. I had the 24-70 GM and it was excellent for me until it got stolen. Now I don’t know wether to get that again or go for this one. I hardly ever find myself shooting at f/2.8, so this seems like a really nice option. From f/5.6 corners look really good here.
should I did not had yet the 24-70 GM , I would have taken the 24-105 as general travel zoom as when I need to shoot with large aperture I always have anyway my prime 35 F1.4, 55 F1.8 and 85 F1.4
Hi! It looks like a great lens, thanks for the review!
What about lens distortion in video? Does the camera (for example a sony A7s) corrects it for video or not?
Thanks!
yes it corrects it in the body
Thanks for the answer Marc! But it corrects automatically without any app like “Lens Compensation” right?
Yes it is the lens comp option that is by default activated
Thanks, great!
Great article! Thanks a lot, this is by far the best review that is clear and easy to understand. May I ask what would you recommend between FE 24-105 F4 G and FE 24-70mm F4 Zeiss on an A7C body to be used while traveling?
24-105 is much better than zeiss 24-70 f4 , but on a7c i would recommend the sigma 28-70 f2.8 cheaper lighter better aperture and similar if not better quality than the 24-105
Hi Marc, I am an automotive photographer. I have the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art but am selling it and will be switching to this lens after that. The reason is because I believe it will have faster auto focus and the OSS will help me with the rolling shots. What I am slightly afraid of if the sharpness will be as good? I am using the A7 III body. Could you please confirm for me if that will be the case indeed since you’ve tested both lenses? I also will be buying the Sigma 35mm f1.4 for low light situations. Would that be my best choice?
On a7iii and even higher mpx it will be similar sharpness with a little pref for me for the sigma
In term of af speed it is mainly the body the issue
The sigma f2.8 will focus faster than the f4 as more light to do the focus
Provided you are in aperture drive = focus priority
Hi Marc, thank you so much for the fast reply!
I’ve heard and read everywhere that Sigma lenses tend to be a tad slower with auto focus compared to native Sony lenses. Wouldn’t it be the same here? Especially given that I am shooting only in manual.
In your opinion is it worth selling the Sigma and getting the 24-105 given that I want more stabilization during rolling shots and videos, more focal length (was planning on buying 85mm f1.8 and 135mm down the line but now I think the sony lens will do a good job) and what I was hoping/expecting slightly faster auto focus in manual?
On a9 and a1 yes sony native will be faster as only sony lenses can reach 20 or 30 fps
On long telephoto like 200-600 sony is definitively better in term of af
For 24-70 range the max aperture is more important for the fast af
If you want stab and panning then the sony 100-400 will be more recommended
oui
Thank you for your evaluation. I have 55 and 20G. Should I choose 2070 or 24105?
As you have the 20 i would go for the 24-105
Unless yu would want one lens only for travel and need the 20mm position then the 20-70
I would go for 24-105 if you keep your 20g or 20-70 as unique travel lens if you sell your 20g
20G is excellent and lightweight enough. Although its depth of field for portrait shooting is too shallow, I still cannot bear to sell it. Based on your opinion, I have already purchased 24-105. Although it cannot be installed on my RSmini stabilizer, it does not seem necessary either
I would go for 24-105
Would go for 24-105
