6.1 Side by side / Côte à Côte

Handling  / Prise en main

Whereas the FE100-400 is well balanced in the hand by supporting it by the extended lens barrel , the Fe70-200GM + TC2 seems very heavy and unbalanced. It is difficult to hold it a long time

Alors que le 100-400 se prend bien en main est est bien équilibre en tenant le fut qui s’étend de son autre main , le 70-200GM + TC20 parait très lourd en main et peu équilibré  il est assez difficile de le porter longtemps

Weight / Poids

• 100-400 : 1395gr
• 70-200 + TC20 : 1693gr  (1485 + 207gr) = 20% more heavy / plus lourd
• 70300 = 854gr = 39% lighter / plus léger

 

 

Lens hood / Pare -soleil

The lens hood on the 100-400 is much more solid and thickier than  the 70-200 that looks fragile next to it

Le pare-soleil du 100-400 est nettement plus épais et robuste que celui du 70-200GMqui parait fragile à coté

 

6.2 Performances

@ 100mm

• FE100-400 : excellent @ F4.5
• FE70-200GM : very good to excellent @ F5.6 but little bit below than 100-400
• FE70300G : average wide open at F5  , become good at F11
• FE100-400 : excellent @ F4.5
• FE70-200GM : très bon à excellent @ F5.6 but un peu derrière le 100-400
• FE70300G : moyen à pleine ouverture F5  , devient bon à F11

@ 200mm F5,6

• FE100-400 : very good wide open  / très bon à pleine ouverture
• FE70-200GM :  Excellent @ F5.6 / Excellent
• FE70300G : average / moyen

 

 

@ 300mm

• FE100-400 : excellent wide open / Excellent à pleine ouverture
• FE70300G : good / bon

 

In good conditions the 70-300G can give very good results like below (see FE70-300 @300mm vs FE100-400 @400mm)

Dans de bonnes conditions , le 70-300G peut donner de très bon résultats proche du FE100-400

 

 

 

@ 400mm

• FE100-400 : excellent wide open 
• FE70-200GM + TC2 :
  • soft at F5.6 , good at F8, always behind the FE100-40
  • AF speed is slower than FE1000-400 , AF is hesitating sometimes , especially in video
  • it is noticeably heavier than the FE100-400 and handling is not confortable

• FE100-400  excellent à pleine ouverture
• FE70-200GM + TC2 :
  • mou à F5.6 , bon at F8, toujours derrière le FE100-40
  • l’AF est moins rapide que sur le 100-400, il hésite parfois surtout en vidéo où il pompe
  • nettement plus lourd et moins bien équilibré que le FE 100-400

 

The FE100-400 is handling the TC2 much better than the FE70-200 GM

Le FE100-400 supporte bien mieux le TC2 que le FE70200GM

Bokeh

Of course the 70-200 wins in term blurry background between 100-200 with its bigger aperture of F2.8, giving more creative capabilities

For photos taken at same aperture and focal length

• The 70-200GM has the softest and diffuse bokeh balls
• The 100-400GM has well rounded bokeh balls soft but well delimited and not diffuse
• the 70-300G is good but has a less pleasing bokeh a little bit more nervous

From > 200 , the 100-400 give lot of creative possibility to completely isolate your topic from the background

All of them are far behind the FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS 

Bien sur le FE70-200GM surpasse les deux autres objectifs grace à son ouverture de F2.8 qui permet de meilleurs flous d’arrière plan

Pour les photos prises à la même ouverture et la même focale

• Le 70-200GM a le bokeh le plus doux et les ronds de bokeh les plus diffus
• Le 100-400GM à des ronds de bokeh doux mais bien délimités on ne trouve pas la même diffusion que le 70200GM
• Le 70-300 a un beau bokeh mais derrière celui des 2 GM

Tous sont loin derrière le FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS
