The Brightin Star 35mm F1.4 is a fully manual lens with no EXIF transmission. The build quality is good, the focus ring turns smoothly and aperture ring with knurl is easy to use.

There is a switch to get click or a clickless aperture which is very rare for such low price lens

Le Brightin Star 35mm F1.4 est une optique entièrement manuelle sans transmission des EXIFs. La qualité de construction est bonne et les bagues de mise au points et d’ouverture (avec crans) sont agréables à utiliser

La bague d’ouverture peut être avec ou sans clics grâce à un petit levier, ce qui est assez rare sur ce genre d’optique bon marché

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

Table showing image quality ratings at different aperture settings (F-stops) for centre and corner areas, with categories including Average, Good, Very Good, Excellent.
  • The tests were made on a Sony A7RV with its 61 Mpix
  • In the centre , wide open, the results are average and you need to close to F4 to get very good results. Corners only become very good at F5.6
  • The lens suffers from focus shift due to spherical aberrations : when you close the aperture the focus position change which is quite annoying as you need to refocus each time to change the aperture
  • Overall a bad performance for a modern lens

  • Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RV, avec ses 61Mpix
  • Au centre à pleine ouverture les résultats sont moyens et il faut fermer vers F4 pour avoir de très bons résultats. Les coins ne deviennent très bon que vers F5.6
  • Malheureusement l’objectif d’un décalage de mise au point dues aux aberrations sphériques. Quand on ferme l’ouverture la mise au point change ce qui est fort embêtant car on doit refaire la mise au point manuelle a chaque changement d’ouverture
  • Globalement une performance mauvaise pour une optique moderne

Portraits

For portraits the rendering is nice but the sharpness is quite soft wide open. you need to close to f2.8 for crisp images

Pour les portraits on a un beau rendu mais l’image reste très douce et peu piqué à pleine ouverture, il faut fermer à F2.8 pour avoir un très bon piqué

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

  • Distortion is moderate to high
  • Vignetting is strong at f1.4 and disappear around F5.6
  • Chromatic aberrations are quite present at F1.4
  • LoCA are not very visible at f1.4 at the image itself is soft
  • Resistance to flare is quite good
  • You get some sunstars when closed at F16

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

  • La distorsion est moyenne à importante
  • Le vignettage est fort à F1.4 et disparait vers F5.6
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont très présentes à F1.4
  • Les Ac longitudinales sont peu visible car l’image est molle
  • La résistance au flare est relativement bonne
  • Les effets d’étoiles sont présents à F16

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are very good : circular and without any texture wide open , but you see the 10 blades as of F2.8
  • The background blur is very nice and soft
  • The color rendition his very good
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons bien circulaires et sans texture à pleine ouverture , mais on voit les 10 lames de diaphragme à partir de F2.8
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est doux et agréable,
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

3 Video

Video results are good, with a very nice background blur, bokeh and nice color rendition . Sharpness is ok F1.4 , and very good at f5.6. Relatively good resistance to flare without loss of contrast except if you point to the sun. It compactness and lightness allow its use on gimbal.The focus breathing is visible.

The fact you can set the aperture to click or clickless is a real plus in video

Les résultats sont bons en vidéo avec un flou d’arrière plan doux, de beaux ronds de bokeh et de belle couleurs vintage. Le piqué est correct à pleine ouverture et très bon à F5.6 La résistance au flare est assez bonne (pas perte de contraste sauf à pointer le soleil). Sa compacité et sa légèreté lui permette d’être utilisé sur une gimbal. Le focus breathing est visible

Le fait de pouvoir commuter en the une bague d’ouverture avec ou sans clics est un vrai plus en vidéo

The Pergear 35mm f1.4 is the lightest and the cheapest of the 7 . The Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic that is smaller and build like a tank, it is also the only one transmitting the EXIF to the body, but it costs 6 times the price of the Pergear. The ArtraLab is in the middle in term of price. The build quality of the Artralab is very good above the 7Artisans, Brightin Star Pergear but a little bit below the Voigtländer. The Thypoch is quite big vs the other 35mm F1.4. Its price is close to Voigtlander Notkon classic but this one is much smaller

The Brightin star is the only one at a low price having the switch click/clickless for the aperture ring

Le Pergear 35mm F1.4 est le plus léger et le moins cher du lot. Le Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic, dispose en plus d’une construction superbe de la transmission des EXIFs, mais il coute 6x le prix du Pergear Le Artralab est au dessus en terme de prix, sa qualité de construction est supérieure au Pergear et 7 artisans et Brightin Star mais en dessous du Voigtländer. Le Thypoch est assez grand par rapport aux autres 35mm F1.4. Son prix est proche du Voigtländer Nokton classic 

Le Brightin star est le seul à petit budget qui dispose d’un commutateur pour la bague d’ouverture avec /sans clics

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

A comparison table displaying the performance ratings of various 35mm lenses at different aperture settings, including categories for Centre and Corners.

The manual F1.4 lenses exhibits poor performances in general vs the other AF lenses or the MF lenses at f1.8 or F2 or F1.2. The Thypoch is maybe the best of them. Those are not focused on sharpness but more on a bokeh , soft rendering and nice flare. The Pergear suffers on top from a sharpness mid zone dip

The Brightin Star and the Artralab suffers from focus shift when you change the aperture , which impose to refocus each time you change the aperture

Les objectifs manuels à F1.4 ont de faibles performances en terme de piqué par rapport aux autres optiques avec AF ou MF F1.2 et F1.8 et F2. Le Thypoch sort un peu du lot. Ces optiques ne visent pas à exceller sur ce point mais plutôt à donner un rendu doux , un beau bokeh et des effets de flare. Le Pergear souffre en plus d’un phénomène de perte de piqué à la ligne des 1/3

Le Brightin star et le Artralab souffre de décalage de mise au point chaque fois qu’on Change l’ouverture

4.3 Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • In term of background blur, the 7 lenses are similar with very nice bokeh balls and soft background blur
  • In term of color rendition the 7 Artisans, ArtraLab and Voigtlander have a nice vintage warm rendering , the Pergear , Brightin Star and Thypoch are much more neutral
  • En terme de flou d’arrière plan les 7 optiques sont similaires avec de très beaux ronds de bokeh et un flou d’arrière plan doux
  • En terme de rendu des couleurs, les Voigtlander , ArtraLab et 7Artisans ont un rendu un peu chaud et vintage , le Pergear , Brightin Star et le Thypoch sont beaucoup plus neutre

4.4 Distortion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

  • All lenses have high distortion and high vignetting, but the Pergear is the worst one
  • In term of flare resistance the Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic is the one with the best halo effects, the new 7artisans II being the best resistance to flare. The Pergear is the worst one and the one with the least well defined sunstars
  • The Thypoch is the best in term of CA and resistance to flare

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

  • Toutes optiques ont beaucoup de distorsion et de vignettage
  • En terme de résistance au flare le Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic est celui avec les plus beaux effets de halos, le 7 Artisans II étant le plus résistant et celui avec le moins d’effets de halos. Le Pergear est le moins bon en terme de résistance au flare avec en plus des effets d’étoiles pas très bien définis
  • Le Thypoch est le meilleur en terme d’AC et de résistance au flare

4.6 Conclusion

  • All these lenses are focused on a soft rendering and vintage look with some flare effect and succeed to do so.
  • The Pergear is the one with the most natural color rendering but the worst flare resistance
  • The Brightin star is a budget lens with good color , good bokeh but sharpness is a bit weak on 61mpix , but the focus shift when you change the aperture is awful
  • If you want the “nicest” artistic flare and halos the Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic will be the best at it but its price is very high vs the 7 Artisans and Pergear
  • The Thypoch is certainly the best optically but the ones with the least vintage rendering
  • Ces optiques sont conçues pour un rendu doux et vintage et y arrivent très bien.
  • Le Pergear est celui avec le rendu des couleurs le plus naturel mais avec la pire résistance au flare
  • Le Brightin star est une optique à prix raisonnable et un beau rendu des couleurs et bokeh, mais le piqué est assez faible et il y a un décalage de mise au point quand on ferme l’ouverture
  • Le rendu le plus artistique et de beaux halos sont à chercher du côté du Voigtländer 35mm F1.4 Nokton Classic mais il coute 6 x le prix du Pergear
  • Le Thypoch est certainement le plus performant mais avec le rendu le moins vintage

6 Conclusion (English)

The Brightin Star 35mm f1.4 (190$) is a compact MF lens with a good bokeh and color rendering

The sharpness wide open is quite soft and you need to close down to F5.6 for best results

The lens suffers from focus shift due to spherical aberrations : when you close the aperture the focus position change which is quite annoying as you need to refocus each time to change the aperture

Le Brightin Star 35mm f1.4 (190$) est une optique MF avec un bon rendu des couleur et un beau bokeh

Le piqué à pleine ouverture est un peu mou et requiert de fermer à F5.6 pour les meilleurs résultats

Malheureusement l’objectif d’un décalage de mise au point dues aux aberrations sphériques. Quand on ferme l’ouverture la mise au point change ce qui est fort embêtant car on doit refaire la mise au point manuelle a chaque changement d’ouverture
