1 Presentation

1.1 APO Lanthar series

Voigtlander has a series of super high quality ultra sharp lens with an Apochromatic design most with a F2 aperture. Most are among the sharpest lenses ever made for Sony E mount

They all are manual lenses but with electronic contacts for EXIF transmission

so far we have

The Voigtländer 28mm F2 Apo Lanthar is a very well build compact and light 28mm. It is a manual lens but with EXIF transmission

The Aperture ring can be set to click (White mark) or clikcless (Yellow Mark)

The focusing ring and aperture ring are very well dampened

Le Voigtlander 28mm F2 Apo Lanthar offre une très belle qualité de construction. Bien qu’avec une mise au point manuelle, il a des contacts électroniques et transmet donc les EXIFs. La bague d’ouverture peut être avec clics (marque blanche) ou sans clics (marque jaune)

La bague d’ouverture et de mise au point sont très bien amorties

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

  • The tests were made on a Sony A7RV with its 61Mpix
  • Excellent wide open in the centre and outstanding as of F2.8
  • Borders are also very good only extreme corners are good but reach excellence level at F4

Excellent results but a little bit below the other Apo Lanthar lens for corners

  • Les tests on été effectués sur un Sony A7RV, avec ses 61Mpix
  • Excellent résultats à pleine ouverture au centre et superbe à F2.8
  • Les boards sont également très bon à excellent à pleine ouverture mais les coins extrêmes sont “bons” à F2 et deviennent excellent à F4

Une performance excellente mais légèrement en dessous des autres Apo Lanthar pour la performance dans les coins

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

  • Vignetting is very strong at F2, low at F4
  • Chromatic aberrations are close to zero
  • Resistance to flare is very good
  • You get some nice sunstars when closed at F16

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are very good wide open well circular but you see the 12 blades as of F2.8
  • The background blur is very nice and soft
  • The color rendition is very good
  • Contrast is excellent
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons , bien ronds à pleine ouverture , mais on peut voir les 12 lames de diaphragme à F2.8
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux et agréable
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon
  • Le contraste est excellent

3 Video

Video results are very good, with excellent sharpness, smooth background blur and a very good color rendering. The resistance to flare is very good The clickless aperture rings allows for smooth operations. However vignetting is quite visible. Its compactness and lightness allow its use on gimbal

The focus breathing is quite visible

Les résultats sont très bons en vidéo avec un excellent piqué, un flou d’arrière plan assez doux et un très bon rendu des couleurs. La résistance au flare est très bonne. La bague d’ouverture sans clics permet de faire varier le diaphragme de manière continue et sans bruit. Néanmoins le vignettage est très visible à pleine ouverture.Sa relative compacité et légèreté lui permette d’être utilisé sur une gimbal

Le focus breathing est assez visible

  • The Sony is the lightest but is quite old
  • The Viltrox has 2 proposals a pancake and a classical F1.8 AF lens, they are the cheapest

Conclusion

  • The Voigtländer Apo Lanthar is the best for image sharpness and contrast only vignetting is an issue
  • The Voigtländer Nokton is good overall but very expensive : nice background blur, good very good rendering and is small and light but Viltrox does better for a much lower price although only F1.8 , bigger and almost same weight
  • The Sony and the Viltrox are more balanced lens with a mix of sharpness, small size and weight and very good bokeh with the Viltrox offering superior sharpness performances and better ergonomics for video thanks to its aperture ring
  • Le Voigtländer Apo Lanthar est le roi du piqué et du contraste seul son vignettage est problématique
  • Le Sony et le Viltrox sont des compromis avec un savant mélange de compacité , poids, beau rendu des couleurs, très bon piqué au centre et AF à prix plus raisonnable avec toutefois un avantage pour le Viltrox avec un meilleur piqué et une meilleure ergonomie en vidéo grâce à la bague d’ouverture
  • Le Voigtländer Nokton est bon globalement mais très cher : bon flou d’arrière plan, bon à très bon piqué , compact et léger, mais le Viltrox fait mieux pour un prix nettement plus réduit, bine que seulement F1.8, un peu plus grand mais de poids similaire

6 Conclusion (English)

The Voigtländer 28mm F2 Apo Lanthar (1149 euros) is a lens with excellent build quality and ergonomics. It delivers excellent sharpness globally and outstanding in the centre. Excellent globally (No CA, flare resistance, bokeh, color rendering) its only weak points are corners sharpness wide open and high vignetting

The Viltrox 28mm F1.8 (379$ / 428 euros) is a compelling alternative with AF , 2 times cheaper but with less sharp (although very good to excellent) and bigger in size

Le Voigtländer 28mm F2 Apo Lanthar (1149 euros) est une optique avec une excellent qualité de construction et ergonomie. Le piqué est excellent globalement et même superbe au centre. En alternative le Viltrox 28mm F1.8 (379$ / 428 euros) est une bonne option avec AF , 2x moins cher , le piqué est néanmoins un peu moins bon et l’optique est plus imposante

    I wonder how the Voigtlander 28mm f/2 APO-LANTHAR does for astrophotography? If it is as good as the 50mm f/2 APO LANTHAR, it may be a winner.

    Likewise, I wonder how it compares to a Sigma 28mm f/1.4 ART lens which is also available in the Sony FE mount.
