1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

Sirui has many lines pop Cine lenses. The Vision Prime series is for full frame with T1.4 aperture. It currently contains 3 lenses that have similar specs

The VP-1 cine lens features a native E-mount design along with user-changeable mounts for RF, Z and L systems, allowing seamless switching between different camera mounts as needed.

Sirui a de multiples lignes d’optique cinéma , la série Vision Prime est pour le plein format avec une ouverture de T1.4 . Elle comprend pour l’instant 3 optiques qui ont des specifications similaires

Les optiques ont la particularité d’avoir une monture interchangeables. Elle sont livrées en natif en monture E mais avec le tournevis et les bagues pour les transformer en optiques RF, Z ou L à la demande

The Lens has a medium size and is quite lightweight for a cine lens

The build quality is very good

The rings turns smoothly with a little bit more dampening for the aperture ring

The focusing throw is 330° with more than 180° from 26cm to 1m allow precise focusing in close up

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

  • The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV with its 61 Mpix
  • In the centre , wide open, the results are already good , very good at T2 and become excellent as of T2.8
  • The corners are one grade lower , but in video those won’t be used
  • This is more are enough to get good results in 4K but not to have a super crisp image at T1.4

  • Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIV avec ses 61Mpix
  • Au centre à pleine ouverture les résultats sont bons au centre , très bon à T2 et deviennent excellent à T2.8.
  • Les coins eux sont un grade en dessous mais ils ne sont pas utilisés en vidéo
  • C’est plus que suffisant pour avoir de très bons résultats en 4K mais pas assez pour avoir une image très croustillante à pleine ouverture

For long distance subject same results : Good wide open to excellent at T5.6 in the centre and average corners becoming very good at T5.6

Pour les sujets lointains les performances sont similaires : bons à pleine ouverture au centre devenant excellent a T5.6 et moyens sur les coins devenant très bon à T5.6

For portraits results are good to very good wide open and reach excellence at T2.8/T4. Color and skin rendition are very good

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

  • Distortion is moderate
  • Vignetting is visible at F1.4 but disappear already at F2
  • Chromatic aberrations are low but visible at 100% when facing the sun
  • Longitudinal CA are present also but low
  • Resistance to flare is average but with some nice aesthetic halos for video
  • You get some nice sunstars when closed at F16

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

  • La distorsion est modérée
  • Le vignettage est visible à pleine ouverture, négligeable à F2
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles à F1.4 mais visibles à 100% le soleil en face
  • Les AC longitudinales sont présentes mais faibles
  • La résistance au flare est moyenne mais avec des beaux effets de flare qui seront esthétiques en video
  • On obtient de beaux effets d’étoiles en fermant à F16

3 Video

Video results are excellent, with very good sharpness , excellent bokeh balls, smooth background blur and a very good color rendering. The clickless aperture rings allows for smooth operations.  Focus breathing is null

Les résultats sont excellent en vidéo avec un très bon piqué, un flou d’arrière plan doux à pleine ouverture et un très bon rendu des couleurs. La bague d’ouverture sans clics permet de faire varier le diaphragme de manière continue et sans bruit. Aucun focus breathing un très bon point

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN offer similar specs to the sony 24 GM , even if the GM stays by an inch the best in term of weight and size for a 24mm F1.4. The Sigma 24mm F2 thanks to its smaller aperture is much smaller and lighter. The Sigma 24mm f1.4 is the one with the less good magnification ratio

The Sirui is the heaviest and the longest but still ok and the only one with real Cine controls

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN affiche des specifications très similaires au GM , même si le GM reste le champion en term de taille t de poids dans les F1.4. Le Sigma 24mm F2 , grace à son ouverture permet de ganger beaucoup en term de taille et de poids. Le Sigma 24mm F1.4 est clue avec le moins bon rapport de grossissement

Le Sirui 24mm est le plus lourd et le plus grand mais cela reste raisonnable , c’est la seule optique vraiment ciné avec des bagues d’ouverture crantées

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

The Sony 24mm F1.4 GM stays the king of sharpness at F1.4/F2 , the 2 sigma DG DN come second. The Sigma HSM was much worse in the corners

The Sirui offer good performance but wide open on 61Mpix not to the same level , but as this is mostly a lens for video it will be very good for 4K (8Mpix required) but not as crisp wide open as the others

Le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM reste le champion en terme de piqué à F1.4/F2 , les 2 sigma DG DN arrivent second. Le Sigma HSM est nettement moins bons dans les coins à pleine ouverture

Le Sirui offre une bonn e performance mais pas au niveau des autres à pleine ouverture sur 61Mpix. Comme son usage est principalement en video 4K (8Mpix) ce sera quand même très bon à pleine ouverture mais pas aussi croustillant que les autres

4.3 Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • In term of background blur, the 3 F1.4 are similar wide open , but the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM has a smoother background blur with busy background. The Sigma 24mm F2 is a bit less good
  • Bokeh balls : All 3 F1.4 have excellent bokeh balls
  • In term of color rendition the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM is the best one closely followed by the 2 Sigma DG DN and Sirui
  • En terme de flou d’arrière plan les 3 F1.4sont similaires à pleine ouverture, mais le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM a un flou plus doux avec les arrière plans fouillis. Le Sigma 24mm F2 est un peu moins bon
  • Ronds de Bokeh : les 3 F1.4 ont d’excellents rond de bokeh
  • En terme de rendu des couleurs le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM est le meilleur suivi de près des 2 Sigma DG DN et le Sirui

  • The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN and the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM have the least distortion and best resistance to flare and benefit from lens corrections in Lightroom
  • The Sirui has the lowest level of CA

  • Le Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN et le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM sont ceux avec le moins de distorsion et la meilleure résistance au flare et ils disposent de correctifs automatiques en Lightroom

4.6 Conclusion

  • The Sony 24mm F1.4 GM stays the best overall at a price tag 40% more that the new Sigma. You will mainly see the difference on 50/61Mpix sensor but not on the 24/33/42 Mix sensor
  • Apart from sharpness the Sony stays a bit better in all domains : background blur smoothness , chromatic aberrations, color rendering , but not that much
  • The Sirui excels in video and has dedicated ergonomics and an excellent rendering in video and no focus breathing
  • Globally the new Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN is very good for the price
  • The extra premium you pay for the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM is only justified if you work mainly at F1.4 with this lens
  • Le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM reste le meilleur globalement mais avec un prix 40% supérieur au Sigma. On ne verra la différence ent erme de piqué que à pleine ouverture et sur 50/61Mpix
  • Outre le piqué le Sony reste un peu meilleur dans les autres domaines que sont la douceur du flou d’arrière plan , le rendu des couleurs et le niveau des AC , mas de peu
  • Le Sirui excelle en vidéo avec une ergonomie dédié et un très beau rendu et pas de focus breathing
  • Globalement le Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN a un très bon rapport qualité
  • Le supplément de prix du Sony 24mm F1.4 GM n’est justifié que si l’on travaille principalement à F1.4 et en photo

6 Conclusion (English)

The Sirui 24mm T1.4 Vision Prime (VP-1) – 649$ – is an very good cine lens, very good build quality ergonomics, good to excellent sharpness, very good and natural color rendition, very good bokeh. No focus breathing. Wide open contrast it is not as sharp as competitor like the Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN (899 euros) . Nice subtle flare effect and nice sunstars

On top the lens is delivered with interchangeable mount and support RF (Canon) , Z (Nikon), L (Leica – Panasonic)

Le Sirui 24mm T1.4 Vision Prime (VP-1) – 649$ – est une très bonne optique Cinéma : très bonne qualité de construction , ergonomie , excellent piqué , très bon rendu des couleurs très naturel, très beau bokeh, pas de focus breathing. A pleine ouverture il n’est pas aussi piqué que certains concurrent comme le Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG DN (899 euros) Le flare est artistique sans en faire de trop et on a de beaux effets d’étoiles

Cerise sur le gateau, l’optique est a monture interchangeable et les bagues pour passer à une monture RF (Canon) , Z ( Nikon) ou L (Leica – Panasonic) sont livrées
