2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

A detailed optical performance chart displaying sharpness ratings for a lens at various aperture settings.
  • The tests were made on a Sony A6600 with its 24 Mpix
  • In the centre, wide open, the results are already excellent wide open and become outstanding as of F2.8
  • At long distance the corners are good wide open and become very good at F4
  • A very good performance

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare

  • Distortion is important
  • Vignetting is important wide open and disappear at F4
  • Chromatic aberrations are low
  • LoCA are visible but stay reasonable
  • Resistance to flare is good
  • You get some sunstars when closed at F16 but there are not well defined

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

  • La distorsion est importante
  • Le vignettage est visible à pleine ouverture, et disparait vers F4
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles
  • Les AC longitudinales sont visibles mais rien de grave
  • La résistance au flare est bonne
  • On obtient des effets d’étoiles en fermant à F16 mais il pourraient être mieux définis

2.4 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are very good wide open , well circular and stay so even when closed down , but the balls are not very big as the min focusing distance is only 23cm
  • The background blur is nice and soft wide open but start to become more nervous as of F2.8
  • The color rendition is very good
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons bien circulaires à pleine ouverture , et le reste, malheureusement ils ne sont pas gros car la distance min de mise au point est assez importante à 23cm
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est doux et agréable à pleine ouverture mais devient vite nerveux
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

3 Video

Video results are very good with excellent sharpness , and a very good color rendering. Its compactness and lightness allow its use on gimbal. The focus breathing is visible but reasonable. AF is working fine

Les résultats sont très bons en vidéo avec un excellent piqué, et un très bon rendu des couleurs.  Sa compacité et sa légèreté lui permette d’être utilisé sur une gimbal. Le focus breathing est modéré. L’AF fonctionne bien

The Yongnuo and Sony 15mm F1.4 G are much smaller much lighter than the Sigma,. The Viltrox is the lightest , most compact and one with the most aperture blades

In term of focusing distance the Yongnuo and Sony are much better than the Viltrox and the Sigma

Both Sony and Yongnuo have better ergonomics than Sigma and Viltrox , as they have AF/MF focus hold buttons, the Sony has in addition an aperture ring (click or clickless) . The price of the Sony is however the double of the Sigma, the Yongnuo and the Viltrox are the cheapest !

Le Yongnuo et le Sony 15mm F1.4 G sont beaucoup plus léger, compact que le Sigma Mais c’est le Viltrox qui est le plus léger et compact.

Le Sony et le Yongnuo ont une distance min de mise au point beaucoup plus courte que le Sigma et le Viltrox

Le Yongnuo et le Sony ont aussi une bien meilleure ergonomie que le Sigma et le Viltrox avec de nombreux boutons et même une bague d’ouverture avec ou sans clics pour le Sony. Le prix du Sony est presque le double du Sigma , le Yongnuo et le Viltrox sont les moins cher!

4.2 Sharpness / Piqué

The Yongnuo is doing as good if not better than the Sigma 16mm F1.4 DC DN

The Viltrox is number 4

En dessous de f2.8 le Sony est nettement plus piqué que le Sigma et le Yongnuo. A partir de F2.8, les différences sont minimes

4.3 Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • In term of bokeh the Sigma and Viltrox have a bit better bokeh balls than the Yongnuo and Sony thanks to their 9 blades vs 7 , but the Sony/Yongnuo have a shorter min focusing distance allowing to increase the amount of blur
  • In term of color rendition all are very good with the Sony being the best one
  • In term of softness of background blur all are good wide open but the Viltrox is the most nervous when closed down
  • En terme de bokeh , le Sigma et le Viltrox ont des ronds de bokehs légèrement meilleur grâce à leur 9 lames de diaphragme, mais le Sony et le Yongnuo avec leur distance min de mise au point plus courte ont plus de flou d’arrière plan
  • Rendu des couleurs : Tous sont très bons
  • En terme de douceur de flou d’arrière plan , tous sont assez doux à pleine ouverture mais le Viltrox es the plus nerveux en fermant

4.4 Distortion / CA / Vignetting / Flare

  • The Sony has much worse distortion and vignetting due to its small size, the Yongnuo is comparatively doing pretty well
  • The Sony has best resistance to flare, followed by the Yongnuo
  • Sigma is the least good one for CA and resistance to flare
  • Sunstars are very good on Sigma/Sony a little bit less good for the Yongnuo. The Viltrox is the least good one on this criteria

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage / Flare

  • Le Sony a une distorsion et un vignettage beaucoup plus important que le Sigma du à sa taille, le Yongnuo comparativement fait mieux alors qu’il a la même taille
  • Le Sony a la meilleure resistance au flare suivi du Yongnuo
  • Le Sigma est le moins bons pour les AC et la résistance au flare
  • Les Sigma/Sony ont de beaux effets d’étoiles, le Yongnuo est un peu moins bon, le Viltrox est le moins bons sur ce critère

4.5 Conclusion

  • The Sony is overall the best one : better sharpness wide open, better ergonomics for video, better AF, smaller and lighter, better resistance to flare, lower CA.
  • Between the Yongnuo and the Sigma there is not a lot of difference and the Yongnuo is smaller lighter, has better AF and is cheaper
  • The difference between the Yongnuo and the Sony will mostly be in video and wide open but do not justify a price multiply by 3
  • The Viltrox is a good offering but the Yongnuo is overall better in term of sharpness , background blur , ergonomics
  • Le Sony est le meilleur sur de nombreux points : meilleur piqué à pleine ouverture, meilleure ergonomie en vidéo, meilleur AF, le plus compact et léger, meilleure résistance au flare , AC plus faibles.
  • Entre le Yongnuo et le Sigma il n’ ya pas beaucoup de différence sur la qualité des images mais le Yongnuo est beaucoup plus léger, compact et a une meilleure ergonomie , un meilleur AF et est moins cher
  • Entre le Sony et Le Yongnuo , le Sony sera meilleur en video et à pleine ouverture en général. A vous de voir si cela vaut 3x le prix du Yongnuo
  • Entre Le Yongnuo et le Viltrox les prix et taille poids sont similaire, mais le Yongnuo est plus piqué à un meilleur flou d’arrière plan et une meilleure ergonomie

5 Conclusion (English)

The Viltrox 15mm F1.7 Air (239$ / 269 euros) is a very good wide angle for your A6xxx. Excellent sharpness in the centre but at best very good for the corners at F5.6, very good color rendering, very light and compact, very good AF and good resistance to flare

The weak points are the only good corners wide open, the simplistic ergonomics, relatively long min focusing distance vs competitors and the business of the background blur as of F2.8. Distorsion is also quite important and would need to be corrected in post processing

Alternatives

  • The Sony E 15mm F1.4 G (850 euros) is superior on all aspects but is costing more than 3 times the price of the Viltrox
  • The Yongnuo YN 16mm F1.8 DA DSM (288 euros) is the real competitor with better sharpness in the corners, shorter min focusing distance, more background blur, better ergonomics , better defined sunstars all that at a similar size, weight and price

Le Viltrox 15mm F1.7 Air (239$ / 269 euros) est une très bonne optique grand angle pour A6xxx : très compacte et légère , excellent piqué au centre dès la pleine ouverture mais il faudra fermer à F5.6 pour avoir de très bons coins , très bon rendu des couleurs, très bon AF et bonne résistance au flare

Les points faibles sont les coins seulement bon à pleine ouverture , l’ergonomie trop simpliste, la distance min de mise au point relativement longue par rapport aux concurrents, le flou d’arrière plan un peu nerveux à partir de F2.8. La distorsion est aussi assez importante et nécessite une correction en post traitement

  • Le Sony E 15mm F1.4 G (850 euros) supérieur sur tous les points mais à un prix x3 !
