AF performances are very good in photos and in video. No problem in burst mode

An average performance for a ultra wide that needs sharpness consistency on the entire frame

Excellent rending for portraits as of F2.8 . Very good color and skin rendition

2.2 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distortion / flare

  • Distortion is very strong in barrel
  • Vignetting is very strong at F2.8 and disappear at F11
  • Chromatic aberrations are low but LoCA are visible
  • Resistance to flare is good
  • You get some sunstars when closed at F16
  • Coma is visible (medium) so average for astrophotography
  • Lightroom will soon automatically correct distortion and vignetting. You can download profile from Samyang here

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare

  • La distorsion est forte en barillet
  • Le vignettage est très fort à pleine ouverture et disparait à F11
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles mais des AC longitudinales sont visibles
  • La résistance au flare est bonne
  • On obtient des effets d’étoiles en à F16
  • Le coma est visible à pleine ouverture donc moyen pour l’astrophotographie
  • Lightroom corrigera bientôt automatiquement la distorsion et le vignettage. On peut télécharger le profil sur le site de Samyang ici

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • The Bokeh balls are very good wide open and quite big thanks to the very small min focusing distance
  • The background blur is ok wide open but is a bit nervous when closed down like for many wide angle
  • The color rendition is excellent
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons à pleine ouverture et assez grands grâce à la distance Amin de mise au point très courte
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est bon à pleine ouverture mais peut devenir un peu nerveux quand on ferme comme pour la plupart des grand angle
  • Le rendu des couleurs est excellent

The Samyang is by far the lightest and the most compact, it is the one with the shortest min focusing distance

The Brightin Star is very big and heavy for a F2.8

The Viltrox 16mm F1.8 is much cheaper than the Sony but 100 euros more costly than the Samyang

The Sony 16mm F1.8 is very compact and light

The Viltrox and Sony are the best in term of ergonomics

Comparison table of lens sharpness ratings for Sony 16mm F1.8 G, Viltrox 16mm F1.8, Brightin Star 16mm F2.8, and Samyang 16mm F2.8 at various apertures.

The Sony 16mm f1.7 G is the sharpest closely followed by the Viltrox which is quite similar

The Samyang although excellent in the centre is a bit disappointing in the corners on my sample

The Brightin Star is only really usable at F11

Le Sony 16mm F1.8G est le plus piqué suivi de près par le Viltrox 16mm f1.8

Le Samyang bien qu’excellent au centre et décevant dans les coins sur mon exemplaire

4.3 Bokeh / Background blur / Color rendition / Piqué / flou d’arrière plan et rendu des couleurs

  • The Sony is the best tin term of bokeh balls (quite big) , quantity of background blur and color rendition
  • The Samyang is the second best thanks its very short min focusing distance
  • The Viltrox is very good but has a much longer min focusing distance hence much smaller bokeh balls, the color rendition is very good but a little bit less than the Sony in general
  • Le Sony est le meilleur ave les plus grands ronds de bokeh, le plus de flou d’arrière plan et le meilleur rendu des couleurs
  • Le Samyang est second grâce à sa distance min de mise au point record
  • Le Viltrox est très bon mais sa distance min de mise au point nettement plus longue que le Sony ne lui permet pas autant de flou d’arrière plan ni des ronds de bokeh aussi grand. Le rendu des couleurs est également très bon mais, légèrement en dessous des Sony

  • Sony 16m mF1.8 G : 999 euros the best on all aspects : size , weight, sharpness, bokeh balls, AF, CA level but with significant distortion and hefty price
  • Viltrox 16mm F1.8 (500 euros) : excellent on most aspects at a reasonable price
  • Samyang 16mm F2.8 (400 euros) the light and compact option but with only good corners
  • Birghin Star. : quite average

  • Sony 16mm F1.8N G (999 euros) : le meilleur dans al plupart des domaines : taille, poids, piqué, bokeh, AF mais avec une distorsion importante et un prix “Sony”
  • Viltrox 16mm F1.8 (500 euros): excellent à presque tous les niveaux et à prix raisonnable
  • Samyang 16mm F2.8 (400 euros) : l’option légère e compacte mais les coins sont seulement bons

6 Conclusion (English)

The Samyang 16mm F2.8 (400 euros) is globally a good ultra light and quite compact wide angle lens . It has excellent centre sharpness, but only good corners , good resistance to flare, nice bokeh and very good color rendering, low CA, very good AF. Distortion and Vignetting are very strong so you will need to rely on software correction.

The main competitor is the Viltrox 16mm F1.8 (500 euros) which is better for the corners , vignetting and distortion but that is more heavy and big and that has a long min focusing distance so smaller bokeh balls

The Top of the line stays the Sony 16mm F1.8 G (999 euros) also very compact and light for a F1.8 and excellent on most aspects but at 2,5x the price

6 Conclusion (Français)

Le Samyang 16mm F2.8 (400 euros) est globalement une bonne optique grand angle , elle est ultra légère et compacte : excellent piqué au centre mais seulement bon dans les coins , bonne résistance au flare, bon bokeh avec très courte distance min de mise au point, très bon rendu des couleurs, très bon AF. La distortion et le vignettage sont important et seront à corriger en post production

Le concurrent direct est le Viltrox 16mm F1.8 (500 euros) qui est meilleur pour les coins , le vignettage et la distorsion mais qui est nettement plus lourd et imposant. Sa distance min de mise au point est aussi beaucoup plus importante et donc des ronds de bokeh plus petit

Le top reste le Sony 16mm F1.8 G (999 euros) , également très compact et léger pour un F1.8 et excellent sur la plupart des point mais à 2,5x le prix !
