1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

The Adaptalux Studio is a modular macro lighting system that includes powerful and flexible LED lighting and Xenon Flash options.

Designed specifically for macro photography, The Adaptalux Studio is ideal for creative close-up photography and videography.

The “always-on” LED Lighting Arms provide continuous light for your images.

Lighting Arms are flexible and allow to position your light exactly where you need it but they are rigid enough to stay well in place. They are available in multiple colours , the beam angle is adjustable from wide 115° to narrow 20°

The Lighting arms are mounted on a control pod (max5 lights) that give them power. They can be controlled individually in term of power with an application on your smartphone

There are also some diffusing filters that allow to diffuse the lights and change the colors

Les bras de lumières “always on” fournissent une source de lumière continue pour vos images. Les bras d’éclairage sont à la fois flexibles pour être positionnés où bon vous semble mais assez rigide pour rester en place. Ils sont disponibles dans de nombreuses couleurs. Leur faisceau peut être ajuste de large 115° à étroit 20°

Les bras d’éclairage se montent sur un “control pod” max 5 bras qui les fournissent en électricité. Ils peuvent être controlés finement et individuellement via une application sur smartphone

Des filtres de diffusion permettent également de diffuser la lumière et de changer sa couleur

For this test I have received a kit with the control pod (max 5 lights) , a mini pod (1light) , a camera hot shoe mount, several lights and some diffusers

Pour ce test j’ai reçu un kit sur mesure avec un Control pod (5 bras max) , un mini pod (12 bras) , un support de caméra et de nombreux bras de lumières différents et des domes de diffusions

2 The Lighting arms / Les bras d’éclairage

Each of the lighting arm is both rigid but highly flexible. Each cost individually 44 euros for most of them except the UV (67 euros)

Chacun des bras d’éclairage est à la fois rigide et flexible. Il coûte en moyenne 44 euros pièce mais certains comme les UV cont jusqu’à 67 euros

You can screw or unscrew the end to control the focusing of the light from 20° to 110°

On peut visser ou dévisser la terminaison du bras pour ajuster l’angle du faisceau de 20° à 110°

3 The Pods

3.1 Control Pod 3.0

The control Pod 3.0 has a built in battery and can be charged in USB-C (eg via a battery bank) . I have used it for more than 1 hour without any issues

The control pod can be mounted on a camera via a hotshot mount , a mini tripod, a Go-pro mount

Up to 5 lights can be mounted on it

To mount a light just drop it into one of the hole of the control pod it will stick by magnetism and the light will turn on automatically. To remove it, just pull it

You can add a diffuser at the end (look like a little soft box)

Les control Pod 3.0 ont une batterie interne qui se charge en USB-C (par ex via une batterie externe). Je l’ai utilise en continu pour plus d’une heure sans problèmes

Le control pod peut être monté sur support flash d’un boitier via un support. Il peut être aussi monté sur un mini trépied ou un support Go Pro.

Le consol pod support jusque 5 bras. Pour monter un bras il suffit de le déposer dans le pod : il s’aimante automatiquement et s’allume. Pour le retirer il suffit de tirer

On peut également ajouter un diffuseur au bout (qui ressemble à une petite boite à lumière en plastique)

3.2 The Mini pod

The Mini pod allow for smaller setup or to scatter the lights all around a scene

Le pod mini est utile pour les setup de précision ou pour disperser les lumières tout autour d’une scène

3.3 Background cards / cartes d’arrière plans

Two A5 background cards are provided (4 faces) that allow to give some coloured background to your macro shots

Some additional ones in A5 or A4 are available in their shop

4 The Smartphone App

The Adaptalux application is the most easy way to control the lights

By clicking on the white button of the control pod 3.0 , bluetooth pairing is activated

In the App , just click on the + then “connect to control pod” button , the device will be found vey quickly then choose to control the pod via the application.

Once done, you can see a representation of the control pod. As the app does not know which color has been put in the pod you can pick up the right color and add an eventual picture of the diffuser

By clicking on each light you can turn it on or off or choose the intensity from 0 to 100%

A combination of light can be saved as a preset if you want to reuse it

L’application Adaptalux est la maitre la plus facile de contrôler les lumières

En cliquant le bouton blanc sur le control pod 3.0 on passe en mode d’appariement bluetooth

Dans l’application , on clique sur + puis sur “”connect to control pod” , puis choisir le contrôle via l’application

Une fois apparié, on voit une représentation graphique du pod. Comme l’application ne sait pas déduire la couleur des bras d’éclairage, on peut cliquer dans l’application pour choisir la couleur et indiquer si un diffuseur est présent ou pas.

En cliquant sur chaque lumière on peut les allumer ou les éteindre mais aussi régler la puissance de 0 à 100%

Les combinaisons de lumières peuvent être sauvées pour réutilisation future

5 Macro Photography

There are endless possibility in term of macro lighting from classical white lighting to colour creative lighting

I did a few tests on the gold mask

Bare nude lighting allow to colour a very concentrated area , whereas diffuser give a global colour ambiance

J’ai fait quelques tests avec un masque doré

les bras utilisés seuls permettent d’ajouter de la couleur de manière très localisé , tandis que les diffuseurs donne une ambiance globale colorée

6 Iris Photography

One particular use of those lights is for Iris Photography

for that purpose you should use

• the Super focused bright white LED Lights (400 Lumens) (2×55 euros)
• A macro lens and a high resolution camera : eg Sony A7RV + Sigma 105 DG DN Macro F2.8 1:1
• A Opthamologist chin rest bracket (around 100 euros on Aliexpress)
• A cross focusing rack (340 euros) (eg Novoflex Castel Cross Q)

The subject should be very stable and you should use an aperture of F8-F11 with manual focusing

The led will form a small white stain on the Iris. If you are lazy like me you can take just one picture and use photoshop to correct it with the magic eraser. Otherwise you can take 2 , one with the left led , one with the right led and merge them as 2 layers in photoshop

The light should be strong enough to get pupil of the eye as small as possible. You should be quick as the light can be painful for your subject

Once done , you can post process the photo in photoshop

• Select the iris using an oval selection mask and cut it into a new layer
• Add a black background layer
• Add a small gaussian blur to the oval mask in order not to have a too sharp cutout of the iris
• Adjust contrast , sharpness as per your taste

Le matériel nécessaire est le suivant

• Les bras Led blanc super lumineux (400 Lumens) (2×55 euros)
• Une optique macro et un boitier avec un capteur haute résolution : ex Sony A7RV + Sigma 105 DG DN Macro F2.8 1:1
• Un support repose tete d’ophtalmologue (environ 100 euros sur Aliexpress)
• Double chariot de mise au point en croix (340 euros) (eg Novoflex Castel Cross Q)

Votre sujet doit être très stable et on doit avoir la plus grande profondeur de champ (donc F8-F11) et la mise au point sera manuelle

Le bras led projète une tache de lumière sur l’iris. Si vous êtes un peu fainéant , il suffit d’utiliser la gomme magique sur photoshop pour l’enlever. Si vous êtes perfectionniste il faudra prendre 2 photos une en éclairant par la gauche une par la droite et les fusionner en post traitement.

L”intensité de la lumière doit être assez puissante pour que la pupille soit la plus petite possible. Il faut être assez rapide car la lumière sera très fatigante pour votre sujet

Une fois les photos effectuées on peut les post traiter en photoshop

• On sélectionne l’iris avec un ovale de sélection et on effectue une découpe dans un calque
• On ajoute un calque de fond noir
• On ajoute un filtre de flou gaussien sur le calque ovale pour ne pas avoir une découpe trop franche de l’iris
• Ajuster le contraste et la netteté selon votre goût

7 Conclusion (English)

The Adaptalux is a very versatile and innovative system, it will boost your creative for macro and offer you a starting kit for Iris photography if you are interested in

The LED arms are available in numerous colours, their flexibility allows to focus the light very precisely and you can also adjust the light beam angle. Diffusers allow to have a more global lighting and can change the colour tone of an entire setup

The Smartphone app is very well designed and allow to control very precisely the intensity of the light

Les bras d’éclairages sont disponibles dans de très nombreux coloris , leur flexibilité permettent de les positionner très précisément et on peut régler l’angle du faisceau lumineux. Les diffuseurs permettent de varier les ambiances

L’application smartphone est très bien conçue et permet de contrôler très précisément l’intensité lumineuse de chaque bras d’éclairage
