The Brightin Star 24mm F1.8 is part of a new Brigthin Star series of AF lenses it includes already

The Brightin Star 24mm F1.8 is relatively big and heavy for a 24mm F1.8. It has a very good build quality. There is a click less aperture ring and a focus hold button and a AF/MF switch

The min focusing distance is quite long at 32cm

The lens firmware can be updated via a USB C port

Le Brightin Star 24mm F1.8 est assez imposant et lourd pour un 24mm f1.8. La qualité de construction est très bonnie , il dispose d’une bague d’ouverture sans clics, d’un bouton de maintien de mise au point et d’un commutateur AF/MF

La distance min de mise au point est très longue à 32cm

Le firmware peut être mis à jour via un port usb C

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

  • In the centre the performances are very good wide open and become progressively excellent
  • Corners show good to very good performances just a little bit behind the centre.
  • Same very good performances in close up
  • Au centre les performances sont très bonnes à pleine ouverture et on atteint un piqué excellent dès F4.
  • Les coins sont eux bons et atteignent , le très bon dès F2.8
  • Même très bonnes performances en prises de vues rapprochée

2.2 Vignetting , chromatic aberrations , distortion, flare, sunstars

  • Vignetting is visible at F1.8 but disappears at f4
  • Distortion is moderate
  • The level of CA is very low
  • Low level of LoCA
  • Resistance to flare is average as you got some flare and halo effects in direct sun
  • Low coma so good for astrophotography
  • You get nice sunstars at F16

2.2 Vignettage, aberrations chromatiques, distorsion, flare, effets d’étoiles

  • Le vignettage est visible à F1.8 mais disparait à F4
  • La distorsion est modérée
  • Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
  • Les AC longitudinales sont faibles
  • Faible coma donc bon pour l’astrophotographie
  • La résistance au flare est moyenne mais avec des effets de halo face au soleil
  • Beaux effets d’étoiles vers F16

2.3 Bokeh / Color rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

  • Due to the long min focusing distance the size of Bokeh balls is not very big
  • The Bokeh balls are very good : well circular at all apertures
  • The contrast is very good
  • The background blur is very good : very soft at F1.8/F2.8 but could become more nervous as of F4
  • Color rendition is very good and natural
  • A cause de la distance min de mise au point assez longue les ronds de Bokeh ne sont pas très grand
  • Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons: bien circulaires à toutes les ouvertures
  • Le contraste est très bon
  • Le flou d’arrière plan est plaisant et très doux à f2.8 /F2.8 mais commence à devenir nerveux à F4
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon et naturel

  • Very good results in term of Sharpness, Bokeh, background blur smoothness and color rendition in video, very nice rendering for street or architecture photography, very goodt AF
  • The click less aperture ring is very convenient for video
  • Focus breathing is almost null
  • Très bon résultats en vidéo avec un excellent piqué, beau flou d’arrière plan , de beaux ronds de Bokeh et un très bon rendu des couleurs, globalement très bon pour de la photo de rue ou d’architecture, très bon AF
  • La bague d’ouverture sans clics est agréable en vidéo
  • Focus breathing quasi null

4 Comparison with other small 24mm

The competitor are the 7 Artisans 24mm F1.8 AF, Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN (619 euros) the Samyang 24mm F1.8 and the Viltrox 24mm F1.8.

From a specifications perspective the 7 artisans and the Brightin Star are the heaviest and the biggest but by far the cheapest. they are the ones with the worst min focusing distance

D’un point de vue spécifications, le 7 artisans et le Brightin Star sont très similaires , ce sont les plus lourd et les plus grandet les moins cher Ce sont aussi ceux avec la pire distance min de mise au point

Sharpness / Piqué

A comparison chart showing the optical performance ratings of various 24mm lenses, including Brightin Star 24mm F1.8, Viltrox 24mm F1.8, Samyang 24mm F1.8, 7 Artisans 24mm F1.8, and Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN across different f-stop settings.
  • The 7 Artisans is the best of the 4 lens closely followed by the Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN. Much better than the Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF
  • The Brighting Star is a bit below but still better than the Viltrox 24mm F1.8 is globally one to 2 grade lower than the Sigma / 7 Artisans
  • Le 7 Artisans est le meilleur suivi de près par le Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN. Ils sont bien meilleures que le Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF qui avait des coins assez faibles à pleine ouverture
  • Le Brightin Star est en dessous mais supérieur au Viltrox 24mm F1.8 quit globalement deux notes en dessous

Background Blur & Bokeh Balls Portraits / Flous d’arrière plan – Ronds de Bokeh Portraits

  • The Sigma 24mm F2 and Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF have the best background blur and bokeh balls at normal distance thanks to their F1.8.F2 aperture
  • The Viltrox 24mm F1.8 and 7 Artisans , Brightin Star are lagging behind as having a very long min focusing distance
  • Color rendition is very good on all of them
  • Le Sigma 24mm F2 et le Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF ont le plus beau flou d’arrière plan et les meilleurs ronds de bokeh à distance normale grâce à leur ouverture F1.8/F2
  • Le Viltrox 24mm F1.8 , le Brightin Star et le 7 Artisans sont à la traine car il ont une distance min de mise au point très importante
  • Le rendu des couleurs est très bon sur toutes les optiques

Distortion / CA / Vignetting

  • The Sigma 24mm F2 is the one with the worst distorsion but fortunately Lightroom lens profile will correct it automatically
  • The 7 artisans is the best for CA
  • The sunstars are best defined on the Samyang and the Viltrox
  • The flare resistance is the worst on the Sigma 24mm F2 and 7 Artisans

Distorsion / AC / Vignettage

  • Le Sigma 24mm F2 est celui avec la pire distorsion mais heureusement ils sont/seront automatiquement corrigé en Lightroom
  • Les AC sont les plus faibles sur le 7 Artisans
  • Les effets d’étoiles sont les plus définis sur le Samyang et le Viltrox
  • La résistance au flare est la moins bonne sur le Sigma 24mm F2 et le 7 Artisans

Conclusion

The 7 Artisans 24mm F1.8 is can excellent lens for the price it match the Sigma on most point , being even a tiny bit sharper and with less CA. Its weak point is the long min focusing distance. Both have average resistance to flare vs the Samyang/Viltrox

The Brightin Star is good lens globally, but the 7 Artisans at similar price has superior sharpness

The Sigma 24mm F2 is the more consistent lens of all of them with very good to outstanding sharpness on the entire frame , smooth background blur, very good color rendition, very good bokeh balls. The weaknesses are : its average resistance to flare and its distortion that should be corrected in a future Lightroom lens profile. The Price is a little bit higher but this is very reasonable when you see the increase of quality vs the Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF

The Tamron 24mm F2.8 is very close with also excellent to outstanding sharpness overall (on 61Mpix) and very consistent from centre to corners, excellent sunstars , much less expensive but bulkier , but less good build quality, no aperture ring , no F2 and a little bit less soft background blur

The Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF is very good globally but suffers from much less good corners at from F2 to F4 which is a pity for a landscape lens

Le 7 artisans 24mm F1.8 est une excellent optique pour son prix et égale le Sigma sur la plupart des points le dépassant même légèrement en piqué, et avec un plus faible niveau d’AC. Le point point faible principal est la distance min de mise au point très longue. Tous les doux souffrent d’une résistance au flare moyenne

Le Brightin Star est une Boone optique globalement mais le 7 Artisans vendu à un prix similaire a un piqué significativement meilleur

Le Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN est l’optique la plus consistante de toutes avec un piqué très bon à superbe sur tout le champ, un flou d’arrière plan très doux, un très bon rendu des couleurs, de beaux ronds de bokeh. Ses défauts principaux sont sa résistance au flare très moyenne et sa distorsion très importante qui devrait être corrigée automatique par un futur profil optique Lightroom. Le prix est un peu plus élevé mais s’est pleinement justifié vu l’amélioration de qualité par rapport au Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF

Le Tamron 24mm F2.8 est aussi très bon avec un piqué excellent à superbe sur 61Mpix (consistant du centre aux coins) et d’excellents effets d’étoiles et un prix moindre, mais avec un encombrement plus important, une moins bonne qualité de fabrication , pas de F2, un AF plus poussif et un flou d’arrière plan un peu moins doux

Le Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF est très bon globalement mais souffre de coins moins bon entre F2 et F4

6 Conclusion (English)

The Brightin Star 24mm F1.8 (369 euros) is a very good 24mm. It is not the lightest nor the most compact but it stay perfectly manageable. Sharpness is very good in the centre wide open and become excellent as of F4 while corners reach very good level. It has very good build quality, ergonomics (click less aperture ring) , AF , low CA, low coma, moderate distortion , very nice bokeh balls and color rendering.

Its weak points are the long min focusing distance and resistance to flare that although acceptable could be better

The Direct competitors is the 7 Artisans 24mm F1.8 AF at same price that is almost a twin lens, but the sample of 7 Artisans I tested was significantly sharper

Other competitors like the Sigma 24mm F2 DG DN(650 euros) are either much more expensive or like Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF (500 euros) , Viltrox 24mm F1.8 (400 euros), offers much less consistency from centre to corners which is a key feature for a landscape lens and show a significant less good build quality

The best 24mm overall staying the Sony 24mm F1.4 GM (1600 euros) which costs 7x times the price of the 7 Artisans

6 Conclusion (Français)

Le Brightin Star 24mm F1.8 (369 euros) est un très bon 24mm. Ce n’est pas le plus léger ni le plus compact des 24mm F1.8 , mais cela reste très raisonnable. Ses performances sont globalement très bonnes : Le piqué est très bon à pleine ouverture au centre et devient excellent à F4 tandis que les coins deviennent très bon , très bonne qualité de construction, ergonomie (bague d’ouverture sans clics) , AF, faible AC, faible coma, distorsion modérée, très bon rendu des couleurs et ronds de bokeh.

Sess défauts principaux sont sa longue distance min de mise au point et sa résistance au flare bien qu’acceptable qui pourrait être légèrement meilleure

Le concurrent direct est le 7 Artisans 24mm F1.8 AF au meme prix qui est presque une optique jumelle en terme de look et de performances. Mais l’excemplaire du 7 Artisans que j’ai testé était significativement plus piqué un peu partout

Les autres concurrents sont leSigma 24mm F2 DG DN(650 euros) qui est nettement plus cher ou alors en moins bon le Samyang 24mm F1.8 AF (500 euros) ou le Viltrox 24mm F1.8 (400 euros). Ces derniers offrent une bien moindre homogénéité de piqué entre le centre et les coins ce qui est pourtant un critère clé sur une optique grand angle

Le meilleur 24mm toute catégorie restant le Sony 24mm F1.4 GM (1600 euros) mais qui coute 2.5 fois le prix du Sigma !
