FE100-400 GM

General considerations

AF is very fast on the lens but it is lmited by the AF capability of the A7RII, on walking subject I got sometimes not very sharp images due to the movement of the subject and AF not being able to follow up. So you will be better with an A9 to get the full power of this lens on moving subject

In practice  the aperture of F5.6 (especially between 200 and 400mm)  is big enough to have beautiful blurry background but the long focal elngth will impose higher speed and and an increase of ISO.

The optical stabilisation is very efficient: when the shutter button is half pressed at 400mm you really see the image stabilised and it is much more easy to compose your image

Remarques générales

L’AF est très rapide, mais sa précision est limitée par les capacités du A7RII: sur un sujet en marche, j’ai parfois obtenu des léger flous de raté de mise au point. Un Sony A9 avec un AF nettement meilleur saura tirer la quintessence de cet objectif

L’ouverture de F5.6 , surtout entre 200 et 400mm est suffisante pour avoir de beau flous d’arrière plan , mais la grande focale impose d’utiliser une vitesse élevé pour éviter les flous et nécessite de grimper dans les ISOs

La stabilisation optique est très efficace, il suffit de presser le déclencheur à mi course pour voir l’image se stabiliser et permettre un cadrage aisé.

The Bokeh / Le Bokeh

• @ 100mm : the bokeh is circular without onion effect. The background is ok: neither very soft or nervous. The 70200 GM will do better thanks to its bigger aperture
• @ 200 m F5.6 , bokeh effects are more noticeable. the background becomes more blurry
• @ 300 & 400mm A 300 et 400 mm, whether at F5.6 or F8 the background is fully blurry for subject below 5m. Background is very soft

• A 100mm : Le bokeh est bien rond , sans effet d’oignon, L’arrière plan est correct ni très doux ni nerveux. Le 70-200 fait mieux grâce à sa plus grande ouverture
• A 200 m f5.6 les effets de bokeh sont plus marquée , le fond devient de plus en plus flou
• A 300 et 400 mm que ce soit à f5.6 ou f8 le fond est flou pour des sujet <5m. Le flou est doux et pas du tout nerveux

Portraits

The results for portraits are excellent. The very long focal length allow to completey isolate the person you shoot, the subject is popping  up with a 3D effect from the background

For portrait you keep a blurry background up to F8 @ 400mm, you need to close up to F13 to start having a non blurry background

You quickly get addicted to shooting portrait between 300 and 400mm to get this 3D effect and nice blurry background

Les résultats en portrait sont excellent: la très longue focale permet de complètement isoler votre sujet qui se détache du fond ou de la foule avec un effet 3D marqué

Pour des portraits, jusque F8 on garde un fond flou à 400mm. Il faut fermer vers f13 pour regagner de la profondeur de champ et commencer à avoir un arrière plan net

On se prend au jeu de faire des portraits distants entre 300 et 400 pour retrouver cet effet 3D

Sharpness/ Piqué

Sharpness is very good but you often need to close down to F8 to get sufficient depth of field. At F5.6 @ 400mm the depth of field is only 3cm @ 4m distance and 12cm @ 8m

As you can see from below photos I am very often around 800-1000 isos as soon as the topic is not in direct sunlight. Under direct sun I can keep the camera at 200 iso

Le piqué est très bon mais il faut souvent fermer à F8 pour avoir suffisamment de profondeur de champ. A F5.6 et 400mm la profondeur de champ est de 3cm à 4m de distance et de 12cm à 8m

Comme vous pouvez le constater je suis le plus souvent à 800-1000 iso à 400mm dès que le sujet est légèrement ombragé. En plein soleil je suis à 200 iso

Perspective

The focal range 100 to 400mm allow to accomodate very different perspectives. Quite usefull to stay discrete or when you can’t come closer to your subject

100-400 + TC 1.4

Performance with the TC 1.4 are very good in real life

• @ 560mm we have very beautifull blurry background for portraits even at F8, F11
• Bokeh is soft and very pleasing
• Sharpness is very good
• In general I needed to shoot at 800 iso minimum to keep a speed between 1/400 – 1/800 which is the minmum for a 560mm focal length
• AFC is working quite well

Les performances avec le tc1.4 sont très bonnes dans la pratique

• A 560mm on a de très beaux effets de détachement de l’arrière plan malgré l’ouverture de F8  ou F11
• Le bokeh reste très doux et agréable
• Le piqué est très bon
• on est le plus souvent à 800 iso minimum en plein soleil étant donné qu’il faut une vitesse entre 1/400 et 1/800 minimum pour une focale de 560mm
• l’AFC fonctionne plutôt bien

FE100-400 + TC2.0

At 800mm, sharpness stay at a grade of good to very good if you have enough light. You are mostly at 3200-5000 ISO with minimum of 2000 ISO in direct sunlight. In those conditions the sharpness quality is often burried in the ISO noise

You really need to use a steady tripod and a good ball head to allow to shoot with slower speed and lower ISO

You also loose the AFC and must shoot in AFS at F11, AF speed is a little bit slower

A 800mm le piqué reste bon à très bon si l’on a assez de lumière. On est le plus souvent à 3200-5000 iso avec un minimum de 2000 iso en plein soleil. Dans ces conditions la qualité du pique est noyé dans le bruit

Il faut utiliser l’ensemble sur un bon trépied avec un bonne rotule pour pouvoir espérer utiliser des vitesses moins rapides et descendre dans les isos

On perd également l’AFC et on doit se contenter de l’AFS à F11, la vitesse de l’AF est un peu moins bonne.
