Evaluation

• La qualité de construction est excellente
• L’AF est très rapide précis et silencieux comme sur le Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM
• Zoom interne, l’objectif ne s’allonge pas

1.2 Rear filter  holder / Porte filtre arrière

At the back of the lens there is a rear filter holder

You need to make your filter by cutting into a filter sheet thanks to a template provided by Sony with the lens

So it is not the most easy operation if you are not cautious, fortunately company like Haida Filters have made a kit for the new sony 12-24 F2.8 GM (150$ for a set of rear ND filters)

Otherwise if you want to have maximum flexibility and to be able to use polarizer or ND grad filters, the best is to use the new Nisi S6 150mm filter holder (395-440 euros with polarizer but without filter) specially designed for the Sony 12-24 F2.8 GM (tested here)

A l’arrière de l’objectif il y a un porte filtre

Sony fournit un gabarit pour découper ses propres filtres, ce qui n’est pas très facile et nécessite beaucoup de soin. Heureusement des entreprises comme Haida Filters on fait un kit spécifique pour le Sony 12-24 F2.8 GM ( 150$ pour une série de filtres ND)

Sinon pour avoir un max de flexibilité et pour pouvoir utiliser des filtres polarisant ou ND gradué on pourra se tourner vers le Nisi S6 spécialement conçu pour le Sony 12-24 F2.8 GM (395-440 euros environ avec porte filtre 150mm , polariseur mais sans filtres). Je l’ai testé ici

1.3 Lens cap / Protege objecctif

The Lens cap has been improved compared to the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, after pressing the 2 external buttons you can now insert it in any position it will stick to the lens thanks to its 4 inner locks vs 2 for the F4 version. On the F4 you had only 2 inner locks that needed to be well positioned for the lens cap to be fixed on the lens. This little thing improves greatly the day to day experience of using this lens

Le capuchon protège objectif a été grandement amélioré par rapport à celui du Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G: on presse les 2 boutons externes et on peut le mettre sur l’objectif comme on veut, il se fixera à l’objectif grâce à ses 4 loquets internes actionné par les 2 boutons externes. Sur le 12-24 F4 il n’y avait que 2 loquets internes et on devait tourner le protège objectif jusqu’au point de fixation. Cela n’a l’air de rien mais cela facilite grandement l’utilisation quotidienne

1.4 Autofocus

Sony has put its best autofocus motor in this lens , similar to the one of the Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM A super wide angle lens does not require a very fast Af most of the time , but this will allow you to shoot sports indoor very close to the action (e.g indoor skating)

Sony a mis le meilleur moteur AF dont il disposait, très similaire au Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM. Un ultra grand angle n’a en général pas besoin d’un AF véloce, mais ici cela lui permet d’être utilisé pour de la photo d’action rapprochée ex skate

The Sony 12-24 F2.8 GM is the biggest and heaviest of the 3 Wide angle zoom but just 5% bigger and heavier than the sigma one

The weight is still very reasonable and very close to the Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM

It has everything you could imagine with its custom button, weather sealing, rear filter possilbity; nice 9 aperture blades, only the price will hurt your wallet

Le Sony 12-24 F2.8 GM est le plus gros et le plus lourd des 3 zoom ultra grand angle mais de très peu 5% plus lourd et plus long que le Sigma

Le poids reste tout à fait raisonnable et très proche par ex d’un Sony FE85mm F1.4 GM

D’un point de vue design il a tout ce dont on peut rêver pour ce genre d’objectif : bouton paramétrisable, protection tout temps, filtre à l’arrière, diaphragme circulaires à 9 lamelles , seul son prix fait (très) mal

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

• At all focal length the peak performances are obtained at F5.6 with nearly outstanding performances over the full frame (except at 12mm for corners)
• Corners are very good wide open at all focal lengths and become excellent as soon as you close 1 stop
• 12mm : performance is excellent in the centre reaching outstanding at F5.6. Corners are peaking at excellent at F4 , this is the “weakest” part of the lens in term of sharpness
• 14mm similar performances but corners get better with excellent at F4 and F5.6
• 18mm always same excellent to outstanding behavior in the centre, corners start to reach also outstanding levels
• 24mm : the best focal length with outstanding results at F4 and F5.6 on the entire field

Globally

• Wide open , the lens is excellent in the centre and very good in the corner at all focal lengths
• Outstanding level at F5.6 at all focal lengths
• Performances increase with the focal length , 24mm better than 18mm better than 12mm

• A toutes les focales, la meilleure performance est obtenue à F5.6 avec un piqué exceptionnel sur tout les champ (sauf à 12mm dans les coins)
• Les coins sont très bons à F2.8 à toutes les focales et deviennent excellent dès f4
• 12mm : les performances sont excellentes au centre et atteignent le niveau “exceptionnel” à F5.6 , les coins eux atteignent tout juste l’excellent à F4
• 14mm, même comportement mais les coins se comportent mieux avec un excellent à F4 et F5.6
• 18mm : le même comportement au centre avec des résultats excellents à exceptionnels et des coins qui atteignent eux aussi le exceptionnel.
• 24mm : c’est la meilleure focale de ce zoom avec des performances exceptionnelles à F4 et F5.6 sur tout le champ

Globalement

• A pleine ouverture , l’objectif est excellent au centre et très bon dans les coins à toutes les focales
• Le Niveau exceptionnel est atteint à F5.6 à toutes les focales
• Les performances augmentent avec la focale : 12mm étant le “moins bon” et 24mm le meilleur

2.2 Sharpness / Piqué vs Sony 12-24mm F4 and Sigma 14-24 F2.8 DG DN Art

Compared to the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, and to the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art

• The Sony GM is as its best between 18- 24mm whereas 24mm is the weakest on both Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, and the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art
• At 12mm the GM is sharper both in the centre and in the corners , the difference is getting smaller at F5.6 and they are equal at F8
• at 14mm centre shaprness is equal on both Sony GM and the Sigma , but the GM is better in term of corners

The Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art is at 50% of the price of the GM and if you will use it mainly around 14-20mm it will give you equivalent results except for the corners where you can reach the excellence on the GM instead of Very good on the Sigma. The GM will mainly bring you a very good-excellent 12mm and an excellent 24mm whereas the Sigma is weaker at 24mm

If money is not an issue the Sony GM is the best ultra wide angle zoom you can find

• Le Sony GM est à son apogée entre 18 et 24mm alors que le 24mm est le point faible des Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G, et Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art
• A 12mm le GM est plus piqué à la fois au centre et surtout dans les coins , la différence s’amenuise à F5.6 et ils sont pareil à F8
• a 14mm le piqué au centre est identique sur le GM et le sigma , mais le GM est nettement meilleur dans les coins

Le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art est à 50% du prix du GM et si colptez l’utiliser principalement entre 14 et 20mm, il vous donnera des résultats équivalents sauf dans les coins ou le GM atteint l’excellence et le Sigma le très bon. Le Sony GM vous apportera un 12mm et un excellent 24mm

Si le budget n’est pas important alors le Sony GM est le meilleur zoom ultra grand angle que vous pourrez trouver

Quite an achievement ! And if you compare it to the Sony FE 16-35 mm F2.8 GM, I found it performs a tiny bit better

Une superbe performance et si on le compare au Sony FE 16-35 mm F2.8 GM, je trouve qu’il fait légèrement mieux

2.3 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare / sunstars

• Distorsion is very small and a Lightroom profile is correcting it automatically
• Vignetting is low but present mostly at 12mm F2.8 and is away at F4
• Chromatic aberrations are invisible
• Flare resistance is extremely good
• Excellent sunstars can be obtained , one of the most well defined I could observe (similar to the excellent sunstars you get with the Voigtländer 21mm F1.4)
• Very low coma => good for astrophotography

Lightroom lens profile corrects perfectly Distorsion and vignetting automatically

2.3 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare / effets d’étoiles

• La distorsion est très faible quel que soit la focale et Lightroom la corrige automatiquement
• Le vignettage est très faible sauf à 12mm F2.8 où il devient négligeable dès F4
• Aucunes traces d’aberrations chromatiques
• La résistance au flare est excellente
• Les effets d’étoiles sont eux aussi excellents avec des étoiles extrêmement bien définies (proche de ce que l’on peut avoir sur les focales fixes Voigtländer)
• Pas de coma visible donc très bon pour l’astrophotographie

Lightroom corrige automatiquement la distorsion et le vignettage pour cet objectif

2.4 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• With the very small min focusing distance (28cm) and the F2.8 aperture you can get some blurry background with this lens. Quality of the blur is good for a ultra wide angle lens but is often a little bit nervous , but this is certainly the weakest point of the lens (the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art as a smoother background blur)
• Bokeh balls are very good
• The color rendering is excellent
• Contrast is excellent

• En combinant la faible distance min de mise au point (28cm) et l’ouverture de F2.8 on arrive à obtenir des flous d’arrière plans qui sont bons pour un ultra grand angle mais qui montrent régulièrement des signes de nervosité : c’est certainement le point faible de cet objectif (le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art a un flou d’arrière plan plus doux)
• Les ronds de bokeh sont très bons
• Le rendu des couleurs et le contraste sont excellents

A titre de comparaison voici 2 exemples fait avec le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art, qui donne un flou d’arrière plan plus doux

3 Video

In video the sharpness , color rendition , contrast and perspective is gorgeous. The background blur is good but Sigma is smoother.

There is however a big issue on the A7RIV with some AF oscillations in the image, linked I think, to the IBIS (sensor image stabilization). Sony did released a firmware 1.20 for the A7RIV “correcting AF issues with the new sony 12-24 F2.8GM », and that is the firmware I have used . So the problem is still there. I had similar issue with the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art, so it is maybe how the stab is managed on A7RIV with extreme wide angle lenses. Let’s hope Sony will produce a new firmware update to correct this issue

En vidéo le piqué, le rendu des couleurs, le contraste et la perspective obtenue sont superbes. Le flou d’arrière plan est bon mais le Sigma est plus doux

Il y a néanmoins un gros problème en vidéo sur l’A7RIV avec des oscillations de l’AF liées je crois à la stabilisation du capteur. Sony a sorti un firmware 1.20 censé corriger ce problème (que j’ai bien entendu utilisé) , mais le problème est toujours là . J’ai eu un problème similaire avec le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art, donc c’est peut être du à la manière dont le A7RIV gère la stab avec les ultra grand angles. Espérons que Sony sorte un correctif additionnel pour ce problème

• Excellent results landscape / architecture / interior / actions / portraits with stunning sharpness from centre to corners
• Excellent contrast and color rendition
• The only non excellent aspect is the smoothness of the background blur; with is good but not excellent

• Excellent contraste et rendu des couleurs
• Le seul point non “excellent” est la douceur du flou d’arrière plan qui est bonne mais pas excellente

5 Conclusion

The Sony 12-24mm F2.8 GM (3300 euros) is certainly the best wide angle zoom you can buy. Its performance are outstanding and are better than most prime in the 12-24 focal range

• The Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art is much more reasonable (1500 euros) and will give you 80% of the performance of the GM for 50% of the price.
• The Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G (1749 euros) is also very good but can not simply compete with the GM in the corners and need to be closed at F5.6 to try to reach similar performance

With the Sony GM , every photo you take is just stunning when viewed on a large screen : crisp over the entire frame, excellent colors , stunning contrast very few distorsion, the only areas where it is not perfect is the smoothness of the background blur and the behavior of the A7RIV in video with this lens

A must have for pro Landscape / Architectural / Indoor real estate / Close Actions / Astro photographer

Pros

• Excellent to Outstanding sharpness on most of the range
• Very consistent from centre to corners
• Excellent corners (except at 12mm only very good)
• Excellent contrast and color rendition
• Rear filter possible (Haida is selling a kit of rear ND filters for this lens)
• Compatible with Nisi S6 150mm filters (to use Polarizer or ND Grad)
• Low Distorsion
• Low Vignetting
• Zero CA
• Very Low coma, so very good for astrophotography
• Excellent build quality
• Efficient Weather sealing
• Excellent AF

Average

• Good blurry background for a wide angle but the Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art is doing better
• Size and Weight : but in line with peers
• Non removable lens hood (like all ultra wide)
• No optical stabilisation (but available in body)

Cons

• Price (the most expensive Sony lens after the Sony 400mm F2.8 GM OSS and the Sony 600mm F4 GM OSS )
• Flickering behavior in Video on A7RIV (tested with Firmware 1.2)
• No standard filter possible (need to use the Nisi S6 150mm filter holder or rear filter)

5 Conclusion

Le Sony 12-24mm F2.8 GM (3300 euros) est certainement le meilleur zoom ultra grand angle du marché. Ces performances sont exceptionnelles et sont meilleures que la plupart des focales fixes de 12 à24mm

• Le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art est une alternative beaucoup plus accessible (1500 euros) et donnera 80% de la performance du GM à 50% du prix
• Le Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G (1749 euros) est aussi très bon mais ne peut simplement pas rivaliser avec le GM dans les coins , il doit être fermé à F5.6 pour atteindre des performances qui s’en rapprochent

Avec le Sony GM , chaque photo prise vous donne une claque quand elle est visualisée sur un un grand écran : cela croustille sur tout le champ : couleurs excellentes, contraste superbe, très peu de distorsion. Le seul domaine où il n’est pas excellent est la douceur du flou d’arrière plan et le comportement en vidéo

Un indispensable pour les professionnels du Paysage / de l’Architecture / de la photo immobilière en intérieur / de la photo d’ction rapprochée / Astrophotographie

Pour

• Piqué Excellent à Superbe sur quasi toute la plage focale
• Piqué quasi uniforme sur tout le champ
• Excellent coins (sauf à 12mm – seulement très bon)
• Excellent contraste et rendu des couleurs
• Filtre possible à l’arrière de l’objectif (Haida propose un kit de filtres ND)
• Compatible avec le porte filtre 150mm Nisi S6 (pour l’utilisation de polariseur et de filtre ND gradué)
• Faible distorsion
• Faible vignettage
• Pas d’aberrations chromatiques
• Très peu de coma, donc très bon pour l’astrophotographie

Moyen

• Beau flou d’arrière plan pour un grand angle mais le Sigma 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN Art fait mieux dans ce domaine
• Taille et poids mais dans la norme des concurrents les plus prches
• Pare soleil non amovible (normal pour protéger la lentille frontal)
• Pas de stabilisation optique (elle équipe quasi tous les boitiers A7/A9 )

Contre

• Prix (L’objectif le plus cher de la gamme Sony après les Sony 400mm F2.8 GM OSS et Sony 600mm F4 GM OSS )
• Phénomènes d’oscillations de l’image en vidéo sur A7RIV avec firmware 1.2
• Pas de filtre standard possible (il faut investir dans les filtres arrières ou dans le porte filtres Nisi S6 de 150mm)
