The build quality is very good but lower than the Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6
Size and weight are reasonable and smaller than the Sony lens
The lens has optical stabilisation which is the first time for a Sigma lens designed for Sony E mount. It works efficiently handled but on tripod you need to disable it otherwise you will get blurry images, the Sony lenses disable it automatically
There is no tripod collar delivered with the lens but you can buy one as an option with the references TS-111 (it is the same as the one for the Sigma 105mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art )
The minimum focusing distance is quite high from 110cm at 100mm to 160cm at 400mm allowing for a magnification ratio of 0,23x. The Sony does much better with 98cm at all focal length and a better magnification ration of 0,35x
The Sony TCs are not compatibles with the Sigma lens , they fit mechanically, but you loose the aperture control and the AF. Sigma has announced specific TC but only for the L mount and not for E Mount . And there is no plan to get ones due to Licensing agreement from Sony : see below answer from Sigma to one of question raised by one of my reader

As you noticed, yes, we released a new TELE CONVERTER TC-1411/2011 for L-mount camera, but not for Sony E-mount camera, which must be unreasonable for you.
As you may already know, we are licensed from Sony to design and produce Sony E-mount lenses, and it must be done in accordance with Sony E-mount specifications and license agreement.
In the specifications and agreement, there are no statements on teleconverters. So, this is why we cannot design and produce Sony-E mount teleconverters.
So, at this point, we have no concrete plan and schedule for making TELE CONVERTER TC-1411 in Sony E-mount.

La qualité de fabrication est très bonne mais en deça du Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6
Le poids et l’encombrement sont raisonnables et inférieurs au Sony
L’optique bénéficie d’une stabilisation optique, ce qui est une première pour une optique Sigma pour la monture E. La stabilisation optique est efficace et travail de concert avec la stabilisation du capteur , mais sur trépied il faut la désactiver sous peine d’avoir des photos floues. Sur les optiques Sony celle ci se désactive automatiquement
Il n’y a pas de collier de trépied fourni avec l’optique mais on peut en acheter un en option avec la reference TS-111 (le même que celui du Sigma 105mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art )
La distance minimum de mise au point est assez importante : 110cm à 100mm et 160cm à 400mm , ce qui correspond a un facteur de grossissement de 0,23x. Le sony fait bien mieux avec une distance minimum de 98cm sur toute la plage focale et permet donc un grossissement supérieur égal à 0,35x
Les TC de Sony ne sont pas compatibles : ils rentrent mécaniquement mais on perd le contrôle de l’ouverture et de l’AF. Sigma a prévu des TC mais que pour la monture L pour l’instant. Rien de prévu pour la monture E car si Sony permet aux autres fabricants de concevoir des objectifs pour la monture E sous licence , il n’en n’est rien pour les OTCs , donc Sigma n’a pas l’autorisation de Sony pour des TCs (voir texte complet dans la section en Anglais)
1.2 Autofocus
The AF performance is very good for still subjects , with very good eye AF, but on subjects with movements (sports, animals) the focusing was not as good as the Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6. I had around 30% misfocused shots on the Sony A7RIV
La performance de l’autofocus est très bonne pour les sujets statiques, avec un AF sur l’oeil très efficace, mais pour les sujets en mouvements (sports, animaux) , la fiabilité est moins bonne et clairement inférieure au Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6. J’ai eu environ 30% de déchets sur l’A7RIV

2 Performances Photos
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV, with its 61 Mpix
All tests are summarised in the below table, 100% crops illustrate it just below

- Results are very good in the centre but rarely reach the “excellent” grade on the A7RIV. On a A7III or ARIII the lens will be excellent
- Corners are in general one grade lower

2.2 Vignetting / distorsion / chromatic aberrations / flare
- There is not yet a Lightroom lens profile for this lens, but this should come soon
- Vignetting is present wide open and increase from 100mm to 400mm
- Distorsion is present in pincushion: moderate at 100mm it progressively increases up to 400mm
- CA are very low
- Flare is in general not an issue with telephoto zoom as you rarely have the sun in the frame. The lens is quite sensitive to flare when directly pointing to the sun
2.2 Vignettage / distorsion / aberrations chromatiques / flare
- Il n’y a pas encore de profil optique en Lightroom, mais cela ne saurait tarder
- Le vignettage est présent à pleine ouverture et augmente entre 100mm et 400mm
- La distorsion est faible en barrillet et ne nécessitera pas de correction la plupart du temps
- Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
- Le flare est rarement un problème sur les zoom telephoto car on pointe rarement son objectif vers le soleil. Dans ces cas là , la résistance au flare est moyenne

2.3 Bokeh / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
- The color rendition is very good and pleasant with a good contrast
- The Background blur is very soft and pleasant
- Bokeh balls are very good soft with no fringing or onion rings. They are circular wide open at all focal length but you start to see a 9 shaped polygon when you close down.

- Les ronds de Bokeh sont doux et ne présente pas de défauts. Ils sont ronds à pleine ouverture , mais quand on ferme on voit un polygone à 9 cotés et non plus un cercle

3 Comparison with Sony 100-400mm
3.1 Specs & AF
In the hands the Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6
- is more heavy , a little more fat, with a better build quality
- its ergonomics are better with an included tripod collar (optional) on Sigma, 3 custom buttons instead of 1 and TC compatibility, a window in the lens hood to rotate a filter
- its much shorter focusing distance 98cm including at 400mm instead of 160cm allows for much better magnification ratio
- the AF is also superior on the Sony, both on paper and in reality. The Sony has no issue with fast moving subject whereas I had missed shoots with the Sigma in same situations
- but the Sony price is almost 3 times more than the Sigma!!
Le Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6 est
- plus lourd et plus gros, avec une qualité de construction supérieure
- plus ergonomique avec un collier de trépied fourni (en option chez Sigma) , 3 boutons paramétrables aux lieu de 1 , une compatibilité avec des TCs, une ouverture dans le pare-soleil pour pouvoir tourner un filtre polarisant
- la distance de mise au point est beaucoup plus courte : 98cm vs 160cm permet de bien mieux agrandir votre sujet
- l’autofocus est supérieur sur le Sony. Ce dernier n’a aucun problème avec les sujets en mouvements alors que j’ai eu pas mal de ratés avec le Sigma
- mais le Sony coûte près de 3x le prix du Sigma !!

3.2 Sharpness
- On the A7RIV the Sony provide better sharpness performances
- Sur A7RIV , Le Sony fournit de meilleurs performances en terme de piqué
3.3 Distorsion / CA / Flare
- The Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6 shows less distortion and vignetting and already has a lens profile
- CA are low on both
- Flare resistance is better on the Sony
- Le Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6 montre moins de distorsion. et de vignettage et dispose d’un profil de correction
- Les AC sont très faibles sur les deux
- La résistance au flare est meilleure sur le Sony

- The background blur, bokeh balls, color rendition are excellent on both lenses

4 Video
You can get some nice images with the Sigma with beautiful color and soft blurry background , unfortunately the AF is sometimes slow in video or is hesitating to make the focus
Le rendu en vidéo est très bon avec de belles couleurs et un beau flou d’arrière plan. Malheureusement on a régulièrement des problèmes d’autofocus soit trop lent soit hésitant
5 Samples images / Exemples d’images
In below images you can observe that although results on crop are very good in general, they are not as sharp as the Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6 on the Sony A7RIV. You need to close down by one stop to get best results.
You can also notice the frequent use of ISO 800-2000 due to the small aperture (F6.3) and high speed required due to the focal length (1/250sec to 1/500sec)

6 Conclusion
The Sigma 100-400mm F5-F6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary (1000 euros) is a very good lens for the price and will ideally complement the Sony FE 24-105 F4 G OSS on a A7III, A9 or A7RIII
The focal range makes it very versatile for sports, portrait, landscape or animals, but if you intend to use it mostly at around 400mm you may want to look at the Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS more suited for pure animals/birds shooting
On the Sony A7RIV it can not compete with the Sony FE 100-400mm in term sharpness and AF speed, but on a lower resolution camera like A7III or A7RIII you won’t see noticeable difference in term of sharpness
The AF is very good on still subject but on subject in movement you get a higher rate of missed shoots than on the Sony FE 100-400mm
So for animals , sports or A7RIV the recommendation will still be the Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6, for the others and in case of limited budget, the Sigma 100-400mm F5-F6.3 DG DN OS offers an excellent alternative

6 Conclusion
Le Sigma 100-400mm F5-F6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary (1000 euros) est une très bonne optique avec un excellent rapport qualité prix et sera un complément idéal d’un Sony FE 24-105 F4 G OSS sur A7III, A9 ou A7RIII
La plage focale de 100-400mm en fait un objectif très polyvalent à l’aise dans le portrait, le paysage, l’animalier ou le sport. Si votre usage est principalement à 400mm alors le Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS sera peu être plus adéquat
Sur le Sony A7RIV il ne peut rivaliser avec le Sony FE 100-400 en terme de piqué et de fiabilité de l’AF, mais sur un boitier moins pixellisé comme le A7III ou le A7RIII on ne remarquera pas de différences notable de piqué
L’autofocus est très bon sur les sujets statiques mais les sujets en mouvements sont plus problématique sur le Sigma par rapport au Sony. On a un taux de déchets bien plus élevé que sur le Sony FE 100-400mm
Donc pour de l’animalier ou du sport et/ou A7RIV, le meilleur objectif reste le Sony FE 100-400mm GM OSS F4.5-F5.6 (2900 euros), mais à 3x le prix du Sigma , dans tout les autres cas et pour votre portefeuille le Sigma 100-400mm F5-F6.3 DG DN OS offrira une excellente alternative
